  • The Daily Grind: Do you keep MMO accounts on for veteran rewards?

I've got a guildie who's a bit insane. He is notorious for staying subscribed to MMOs he's not playing, sinking tons and tons of money into these games but not logging in. Is he doing it to support developers? Nope. He does it for the veteran rewards. Seriously. He once told me he stayed subbed to City of Heroes because he really, really wanted a veteran minipet. When I consider what that minipet must have cost him in subscription fees, all I can do is think how many brand-new games he could have picked up on Steam for all that dough! And yet here I am looking at my Ultima Online account the same way. The account is 16.5 years old with nine years of vet rewards on it. I left it on a few extra months last year to get to the ridable ethereal polar bear mount reward because hello, ridable ethereal polar bear mount, right? What about you -- do you leave your subscription MMO accounts on to collect vet rewards? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

  • Storm Peaks daily quests reward a polar bear mount

The other day, we talked about the Sons of Hodir and how to start gaining reputation with them. Rep gains are great and all, but there's actually another bonus you can start working on thanks to this quest chain: A Polar Bear mount! At one point during the Sons of Hodir chain, you're turned into one of the Hyldnir, the frost vrykul ladies that populate the Storm Peaks. While only a few of their quests are essential to moving the story ahead, they have other one-shot quests you have available if you so choose.Completing these quests opens up a daily quest you can do when you return to Brunnhildar Village, though you don't get to do all of them every day. It seems only one or two of them are available per day, and which ones you get is random, like the Cooking daily quests. If they don't seem to be offering you a quest at all one day, you probably haven't unlocked the one that happens to be that day's quest. The following are the four quests you need to do first:

If you were lucky enough to get your hands on the Polar Bear Mount loot card from BlizzCon this year (either via attending the con or through DirecTV), then you're in for some happiness tonight if you redeem it.The redemption now works. You can go to http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/misc/promotion.html and fill out the forum there to get your prize all setup. Take the code that's given to you and head to Ransin Donner in the Forlorn Cavern in Ironforge – not the guy in STV like the page says. Turn in the code to Ransin and you'll be presented with a Bind on Account Polar Bear Mount!Yes – Bind on Account! That means you can use the mount on any of your characters on the same account. Very cool for those of us with tons of alts.Take a look at the gallery below for what the polar bear mount looks like. You'll probably see a few of these pop up over the next few days in your travels around Azeroth. %Gallery-34529%

  • BlizzCon mount not usable until after BlizzCon

Another quick note here, which I'm posting because the team at BlizzCon is at the Lost Bar right now (I make absolutely no promises as to the sobriety of anyone involved); we've found out that the polar bear mount plus attached flag-bearing murloc given to all BlizzCon attendees and DirecTV subscribers isn't actually going to be usable until after the convention ends. I've just confirmed this with a friend of mine at the con who's logged into the game from his hotel's wireless as well, so this answers a few questions we've gotten about where are on earth all the mounts are with so many people attending BlizzCon or how to get them working ingame. So if you're headed back to your home or hotel and you've been hoping to get your mount (or, like me, you've just been waiting to see it), hang tight for a few days. With BlizzCon ending late Saturday, hopefully we'll see them active in the following week.

What does a spiffy rare mount cost? You can get a Spectral Tiger for about $900 (once sold for $2,000) on eBay. You could pay 20,000 gold for an Amani Warbear. BlizzCon 2008 World of Warcraft in-game polar bear mount with mounted, flag-waving murloc? $40 bucks. All you have to do is sign up for the DirecTV package and that fabulous bear is all yours. If I were a mount collector, I might persuade my friends to sign up for the package in my name. Kothor of Skywall is ordering the video package even though he's planning on attending Blizzcon. He suggested that Blizzard should make all of the rare mounts available for purchase. This suggestion was welcomed by several who have spent countless hours grinding for their prized ponies.

With Patch 2.3 landing on the PTR, it seems like the special mount news is never ending. Flying machines, special Hippogryphs, PvP Hawkstrider mounts and the new bear mount from Zul'Aman are all new choices available to players when the patch goes live. This video shows a player on a polar bear mount. I have to assume a private server was used. But I can't tell if the polar bear mount is a modification of the Zul'Aman bear mount or something truly in the game. Either way, get your Golden Compass fix by checking out the short video above.Previously on Moviewatch...
