Players get their pick of three wildly different games on Xbox Live Arcade this week. On the one strategic hand, there's The Path of Go ("Go" as in the ancient board game); on the other twitchy, trigger-happy hand, there's Quake Arena Arcade; and on the third, freaky mutant hand, there's the classic X-Men arcade game. Watch the latest XBLA in Brief to see if any of these titles make your fourth hand dip into your wallet. [iTunes] Subscribe to XBLA in Brief directly in iTunes. • Quake Arena Arcade now on XBLA for $15, Quake Live introduces 'Premium Pak 5'

As we guessed earlier, Quake Arena Arcade's price on Xbox Live Arcade is considerably less than the cost of a second-hand Dreamcast, broadband adapter and copy of Quake 3 Arena -- it's now available on the Marketplace for 1200 MS Points ($15). In other Quake news, Quake Live has been updated with "Premium Pak 5," an expansion that adds five new arenas (two are holiday themed), and "new Premium Duel Scoreboards." Two of the five new arenas are community-created, and both of the holiday maps are remakes of earlier Quake multiplayer levels. "Silent Night" updates "Distant Screams" from Team Arena, while "Winter's Edge" is a remake of "The Edge" from Quake 2. Several other, smaller tweaks have been made, though the list is sadly devoid of virtual santa caps.

We'll forgive you if you've forgotten that Quake Arena Arcade was even coming to Xbox Live Arcade. After all, it was announced in 2007 and "very close" to being done in 2009. Whatever that final development hurdle was, it must've been a whopper, but it's been overcome and the game will arrive ... next week. December 15, to be exact. Bethesda won't be announcing pricing until just before the game's release, but it'll surely cost less than a second-hand Dreamcast, broadband adapter and copy of Quake 3 Arena.%Gallery-67171%

We've been talking about Quake Arena on Xbox Live for -- wow, has it been three years? -- and we still haven't heard much on the game since id told us back in February that the game was "very close" to being finished. Now it's popped up on the Australian Classification Database, indicating that there just may be a bit of light at the end of this incredibly long, incredibly dark tunnel. We've fired off some missives to the appropriate parties for comment and will let you know what we hear back. And if you're looking to get a taste of what's in store for Xbox Live, then you may want to get acquainted with Quake Live.

Whilst roaming the halls of Quakecon and shooting everything in sight (with a camera), our friends at BigDownload spotted a heretofore unannounced Xbox Live Arcade version of id Software's FPS classic, Doom 2. According to Shacknews, the downloadable title is set feature all of Doom II's content, in addition to a new episode, 4-player local multiplayer and the usual online shootery. You can also expect an exciting doubling of barrels over the original Doom -- both of the exploding and shotgun varieties. Also spotted at Quakecon: a further proof of life from our long-anticipated friend, Quake Arena Arcade!

click to Arena-size It's been awhile since we've heard anything "official" regarding Quake Arena Arcade, the Xbox Live Arcade port of Quake III Arena. For example, we just found out that "Quake Arena Arcade" is the title of the game! First announced nearly two years ago at QuakeCon 2007, the Pi Studios-developed title was MIA until John Carmack told Joystiq in February that the title was "very close" to being finished. Now, with the power of Twitter at its side, Pi Studios has ushered the very first screenshot of the game into this world. Sure, it's a pretty boring menu screen; however, the more astute amongst you will notice things like: new levels! "Cliffside"? That looks awfully bright and airy compared to the Quake III Arena we remember (see: Arena Gate). Pi Studios' site has some more details on the game: 40 Arenas in single and multiplayer; 16-player multiplayer; leaderboards, matchmaking; and oodles of game modes, including "Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Tournament, Harvester and Overload."So, "very close" eh? We don't see it in this here Summer of Arcade post ... maybe QuakeCon will bring more news. [Via Gamerbytes]Source – Quake Arena Arcade page at PiStudios.comSource – @QuakeXBLA

  • Quake 3 Arena for XBLA is 'very close' to being finished

Despite being first spotted on the ESRB's leak-prone website nearly two years ago, and officially confirmed at QuakeCon over 18 months ago, id's John Carmack assures us that Pi Studios – developers behind the Xbox Live Arcade release of classic multiplayer shooter Quake 3 Arena – is "actually very close to finishing that up." He didn't identify any specific reasons for the delay, but said that the developer had "different things come up at different times" like having to "shift people onto different projects." With Quake Live finally opening its doors to the public today, we asked if the two development teams – at both Pi and id Software – shared any insights into updating the FPS staple. Quake Live producer Marty Stratton said they shared "where it's made sense" – think "gameplay changes," "some ... new content," and some "new character skins" but not the newer, "more PC-centric" arenas. If they can get the finished game in front of Microsoft "within a month or two" like Carmack estimates, we may get multiple Quake 3 fixes within the year.Check back later today for our full interview with id's John Carmack and Marty Stratton.

The finest railgun in the business will be making its way to Xbox Live Arcade as id announces Quake Arena for Microsoft's download service. Previously, this release was merely a rumor fueled by a surprise listing on the ESRB website, so it's great to finally have an official word to go on.Also true to the ESRB listing is that Pi Studios -- best known for their work on the Call of Duty series and the upcoming Mercaneries 2: World in Flame -- is behind the port.No comment as to when Quake Arena will see release was made by id.

  • ESRB leaks 'Quake III: Team Arena' for Xbox 360 (XBLA?)

The ESRB is always a great place to spot upcoming Xbox Live Arcade titles with the word "arena" in the title (Wing Commander Arena, anyone?). Without the enormous lead times of their retail counterparts (see Shadowrun above), these digitally distributed darlings will often sneak in under the radar. Take the Xbox 360 listing for Quake III: Team Arena above. The 1999 multiplayer classic would be a perfect fit for the Xbox Live service (right alongside older brother DOOM), and the newly enlarged 150MB size limit could make it a possibility. Or maybe this is just a retail port, though we can't imagine it faring well in today's competitive FPS environment. We've asked Microsoft and Pi Studios to comment on the listing.[Via GameAlmighty]
