Resident Evil 5 Producer Jun Takeuchi tells MTV Multiplayer that the demo has infected over four million consoles worldwide. Capcom previously revealed the demo was downloaded 1.8 million times during its first week on Xbox 360, but the latest figure incorporates the PS3 numbers and downloads in the month since.Takeuchi also took a moment to talk about concerns brought up by those who played the demo. He states that the staggered couch co-op split-screen was designed to prevent the lead characters from standing in "one column." He continues that people will understand the controls better once they have the full game, and he says they'll respond if any racism issues come up at a later date. RE5 finally shambles onto consoles next month.%Gallery-5253%

From inside his fortified office, where he can hear the shambling of the unemployed just outside, Major Nelson sends word that the Resident Evil 5 demo is up on Xbox Live Marketplace. The 472MB demo is the same one released in Japan early last month, featuring two levels that can be played solo or co-op, either online or couch-style with split screen. The demo should be available sometime next week for the PSN. Eurogamer confirmed a Feb. 2 (Monday) release across the pond, but we've yet to hear back from Capcom about an official date in North America. At the latest, it'll arrive in time for the standard Thursday PSN update.Update: Capcom confirmed to us that the PS3 version is coming February 2 to North America.

click to enlarge The Resident Evil 5 demo is coming to the US -- this time officially -- and is "premiering exclusively" the week of January 26th on Xbox 360, so sayeth the Major. The demo features two levels that can be played either solo (with AI support) or with a buddy via split-screen or Xbox Live -- yeah, it's the same as the Japanese demo, unsurprisingly. No word on the release of a PlayStation 3 demo, but we've poked our Capcom contact and will let you know what we find out. In Japan, the PS3 demo is only available on a bonus disc. Update: A Capcom press release clarifies that the Xbox Live demo will be released on Monday, January 26th and, for Gold subscribers, will be "available exclusively on Xbox 360 for one week" -- at which point the PSN version will be released (during the week of February 5th). In addition, the Resident Evil 5 TGS trailer will be available for download on Xbox Live beginning this Friday, January 16th. [Via PS3 Fanboy] Gallery: Resident Evil 5 (12-18-2008)

  • Resident Evil 5 demo taken offline

The Resident Evil 5 demo's online co-op mode is no longer accessible outside of Japan, reports X3F. While our friends have not verified the mode's status inside Japan, X3F confirms that users outside of Japan are auto-magically signed out of Xbox Live upon launching the demo, which is, officially, only available in Japan. But a workaround makes the content accessible worldwide, and a built-in English language option further fuels the temptation. C'mon, everybody else is doing it ... It seems, though, that Microsoft is now filtering IP addresses that connect to the demo's servers, apparently denying any that don't originate from Japan. Stopping short of redirecting your Xbox Live connection through a proxy server (note: it may sound like we know what we're talking about -- but we really have no idea), demo players outside of Japan will have to settle for offline play until the official releases hit their regions. Look at it this way: it beats being banned.

Look, we're lazy. We're content to wait for the Resident Evil 5 demo to come to us. X3F? Sure, our Xbox brethren are lazy, too. But they're also fanboys. And fanboys leap at the chance to play anything -- no matter what the cost (in this case, a 48-hour Xbox Live trial code) -- before the other guys. So, without further ado ... (here's the part where you press "play.")
