  • Capcom sales fall in 1st fiscal quarter, income rises

Capcom has reported financial results for its first fiscal quarter of 2011, which ended June 30. The company reported sales of ¥11.95 billion ($153.7 million), down from ¥19.04 billion ($244.91 million) during the same period last year -- a 37 percent decrease. Despite the dip in sales, Capcom managed to pull in a net income of ¥338 million ($4.35 million), up by 58 percent from ¥213 million ($2.74 million) during the same period last year. Sales of "consumer online games" fell sharply, with Capcom stating that Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, Monster Hunter Freedom 3 and Monster Hunter Frontier Online Forward "basically" met sales projections. Specifically, The Mercenaries 3D – available since June 2 in Japan and since June 28 in the US – moved 400,000 units. Super Street Fighter IV Arcade, only available as DLC for a few days in June, sold 300,000. Monster Hunter Freedom 3 still managed to move 100,000 copies despite being released all the way back in December. Meanwhile, Capcom's arcade sales were up eight percent despite the difficulties faced after Japan's earthquake earlier this year. Social games are also doing quite well for the company, cresting 19 million downloads largely on the back of Smurf's Village.

  • If you must delete that Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D save, here's some help

If you've purchased a used copy of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D and been thwarted by Capcom's bizarre save-locking procedures, hope is not lost. In fact, we've got two great methods to remove the save data -- if it really bothers you that much. 1. Toss the game into a campfire. Pros: The save data is gone. Like, way, way gone. Cons: Liquified cartridges are notoriously hard to insert back into systems. 2. Purchase the NDS Adaptor Plus, a doodad that can be used to back up save data to PC, and to eradicate save games. Pros: The game can still be played. Cons: Campfires are free, and the NDS Adapter Plus will cost you some money. We'll let you ruminate on this one for a bit.

Speaking with Capcom Unity last Friday, Capcom USA VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development Christian Svensson said that, given the upheaval and generally bad reaction caused by Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D's peculiar save system, it's unlikely that we would "see something like this happening again." He also maintains that there was "never quite the malicious intent the conspiracy theorists out there would have you believe," and that RE:TM3D's inability to reset saves was a conscious design decision aimed at maintaining the "arcade fighter" feel of the title. Regardless of why they did it, it's good to hear the team claiming that it won't happen again. We're just dying to reset our Mega Man Legends 3 saves.

  • Game retailers go back and forth on Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D sales policies

Used games retailers across the globe have adopted a number of uncharacteristic policies regarding sales and trade-ins of Capcom's one-save-only title, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. When news of the game's unrestartability first surfaced, North American Gamestops announced they would not accept the game as a trade-in -- a policy which reversed today. Speaking to IGN, a Gamestop rep explained, "GameStop did ask the U.S. store base to stop accepting trades on Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D as we evaluated the save system for the game." The representative added, "Upon further review of the process with our publisher partner, Capcom, GameStop will resume taking trades on the game effective Wednesday, June 29." Overseas, British retailer HMV has ceased taking trades for the title -- and EB Games Australia has apparently stopped stocking the game altogether. A representative on the EB Games Facebook group explained, "If you would like to purchase it with us then of course we will sell it to you, it will be a case of an order with our store." They added, "We made the tough decision to remove it from sale because we have everybody's best interests in mind, and don't feel its fair that you guys would be paying $60 for what is essentially a one use game."

  • Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D review: Slow and unsteady

Capcom managed quite the paradoxical feat when designing the past two main entries in the Resident Evil franchise: It built the games' combat on fundamentally flawed ideas without making them fundamentally flawed. While other third-person shooters prioritized smooth, streamlined action, Resident Evil 4 and 5 deliberately hobbled the player's adroitness, and made holding off the oncoming zombie (or Ganados, or Majini) hordes a cumbersome chore. And it worked. By severely limiting the player's locomotion, those core Resident Evil titles maintained the delicate balance between power and vulnerability -- a necessity for a great horror title. There was method in your sluggishness, as the player was forced to consider both short-term and long-term survival with every enemy encounter. Each indolent battle had context in a much, much larger campaign, and for that very reason, Capcom made a bad thing good. Unfortunately, every last shred of that context has been stripped away from Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D.%Gallery-123217%

  • Diamonds are forever, and so are Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D save files

It'd probably be more difficult to propose with a solitary princess-cut Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D cartridge, though. According to the above box-shot provided by NeoGAF forums user Vyse The Legend, it appears as though TM3D saves cannot be erased. This means that A) your actions in the game can never, ever, ever be taken back, just like in real life, and B) that your save files can't be reset by the frugal gamer that buys your old cart from GameStop. Some speculate that this seemingly arbitrary limitation has been implemented by Capcom in order to discourage used game sales, and seeing as the Japanese version can be bought used for as little as six bucks, we can't imagine US gamers getting much for their trade-ins when the time comes.

  • Yakuza: Of the End hits the top of slow Japanese sales chart

After an earthquake-prompted delay, Yakuza: Of the End has been officially released in Japan, to ... pretty good sales. Not the best sales of the series, but the best sales of the very slow week. According to 4Gamer's report of Media Create sales, the gangsters vs. zombies shooter sold 298,717 copies in its first week, fewer than Yakuza 4 moved last year (384,000) or Yakuza 3 before (372,000). It wasn't enough to boost hardware sales appreciably, as PS3 sales only increased 594 units over the previous week, to 17,104. Fans of low numbers will enjoy the rest of the sales chart -- the number two game behind Yakuza was Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, which earned its position by selling 15,551 copies. See the rest of the "top" ten after the break, and start formulating your plan to revitalize the Japanese game industry. Nintendo's thinking "release the 3DS again in a new color." Sega's plan is, of course, Of the End costume DLC (as seen above!)

We knew that we'd have our chance to kick some zombies in their stupid, three-dimensional faces sometime this summer -- but without anything more specific than that, it's proven difficult to pencil any undead annihilation into our day planners. Fortunately, Capcom has firmed up the summer launch window for Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D into something more specific. How specific? How about June 28, 2011, at like, midnight or something. That specific enough for you? You can find a trailer announcing the release date posted after the jump. We found it scary, but mostly because we're pretty terrified by acts of violence against journalists. And, you know, decapitation.

In the words of Wesker himself, nobody could have ever predicted "it" would spread so fast. We assume he's referring to the Resident Evil franchise, which will see five (five) different releases this year. See footage of them all in the Resident Evil 15th anniversary trailer after the break. One thing to note: Both Code: Veronica X HD and Resident Evil 4 HD are promoted with the Xbox Live "Games on Demand" logo beneath their titles (as opposed to the Xbox Live Arcade logo). It's possible that Capcom is opting to distribute the titles under the Games on Demand platform in North America (where they will be download-only) in order to bypass the 2GB size limit placed on XBLA titles.

Capcom announced today that a playable demo of Resident Evil: Revelations will be included with Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, which is set to launch on 3DS in Japan this June and elsewhere sometime during summer. The Revelations demo puts you in control of longtime series star Jill Valentine, who's trapped on an ocean liner beset by you-know-what. Don't be too hasty in calling them vile, hungry and monstrous things -- it's just that the cruise ship buffet shuts down at 8PM. Capcom promises there'll be more (revelatory) details during this year's E3. %Gallery-109631%

Along with the announcement of Resident Evil: Revival Selection, the latest Famitsu reportedly has some smaller-scale Resident Evil news as well. According to leaks from the magazine, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D will be released in Japan on June 2. The Famitsu article also introduces Albert Wesker and Jill Valentine as playable characters, with Jill as a more "balanced" character, and Wesker more skilled with heavy weapons. The last we'd heard about any release date was Capcom's announcement during the January 19 3DS event of a "summer" release in North America. If it's hitting Japan in June, it seems to be on track to make that summer date here.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D isn't a game -- it's fan service. You see, there are two types of Resident Evil fans: casual ones that have fun playing a "survival horror" game and the hardcore buffs that really, really dig its absurd, kitschy, over-the-top action. I'm part of the latter group, meaning The Mercenaries 3D seems like a love letter to me. However: If you're not part of that latter group, you'll quickly find yourself disinterested in what The Mercenaries has to offer. There's a reason why the original "The Mercenaries" game mode was tucked away as a bonus in the last two console RE offerings. Where are the puzzles? Scripted events? Where is the story? These are all features that have been severed, packaged into Resident Evil: Revelations (another 3DS game, due at a later date). While some will rightfully take offense at Capcom's obvious "double dipping," it's hard to deny the sheer fun of knifing "zombies" in the knees and spin-kicking them to increase your score multiplier. The Mercenaries is meant for those gamers that find the core gameplay of Resident Evil fun and want to memorize maps in order to get the highest score. It's meant for the kind of player that thinks seeing HUNK fight RE5's Executioner while roaming a castle from RE4 justifies a purchase. By merging characters, enemies and levels from both RE4 and RE5, The Mercenaries 3D has effectively become the closest thing to a "Smash Bros." the Resident Evil universe has.%Gallery-114644%

Capcom has revealed a tiny morsel of information regarding the launch window of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. Alas, the game will miss the 3DS's March 27 launch date, forcing players to wait until this summer to satisfy their zombie, ganado and Majini slaying urges. We know, it hurts. But hey, at least Capcom had the decency to release some new screens and a trailer. Check out the screens in the gallery below and find the trailer after the break. %Gallery-114644%

Did you hear? It's got a built-in pedometer! The 3DS measures your steps as you walk -- right there in your pocket! Even better: You can pull the thing out whenever and snap all kinds of pics -- the thing's got three cameras! And get this: It also pipes out music, browses the internet and even plays games. True, you've already got a pile of old DS games (and now defunct DS devices) that you could be playing on your new pedometer, but more than 30 three-DEE titles are expected to be released during the 3DS "launch window" (which begins March 27 and promptly closes on June 7 with the start of E3). We've listed 24 of the apparent launch-window releases after the break (though Nintendo's being coy about exact dates), including Nintendo's own Nintendogs + cats and Pilotwings Resort, plus a hearty helping of third-party support; with notable newcomers, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked (previously unannounced outside of Japan) and Crush 3D, a possible port of the 2007 PSP platforming puzzler from Sega. Don't look at the date ambiguity in dismay -- see it as an opportunity! Beginning in late March, you can walk to and from GameStop in anticipation of a new batch of games each Tuesday for ten whole weeks, and the 3DS will count your steps -- each and every one of them! And just imagine how many Street Passes you're going to rack up?

The latest Famitsu (translated by Andriasang) offers details on Resident Evil: Revelations and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, the two survival horror games Capcom is preparing for 3DS. Unsurprisingly, given its basis on content from Resident Evils 4 and 5, The Mercenaries is closer to completion, estimated at 70%. Capcom is adding some kind of touch screen control system and RPG-ish character customization, and has also implemented first-person aiming for weapons, during which you aim with the analog slider. Director Kazuhisa Inoue said that this change allows players to experience the 3D visuals as if they were really there -- as if they were really surrounded by monsters. How nice. Revelations is earlier in the development process -- just 20%. According to Famitsu's feature, it takes place on a cruise ship between the events of RE4 and RE5. It's meant to combine the exploration of pre-RE4 games with the combat in the later Resident Evils. Director Koushi Nakanishi says that with limited ammo and creatures emerging unexpectedly, it's a real "survival horror" game.

Last night's Nintendo 3DS showcase highlighted a brand new addition to the Resident Evil franchise -- the second planned for the 3DS system. The Mercenaries 3D combines the arcade levels from both Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5 and adds "brand new modes" and "well known characters from the series." According to Capcom, the game will also take advantage of the 3DS Wi-Fi Connection for online co-op play "regardless of location." Does this mean you'll be able to run, stop, aim, and shoot zombies with friends from Japan? The first screenshots of the game showcase one of the earliest levels from Resident Evil 5, and while the 3DS version doesn't appear to have the same fidelity as the PS3/360 originals, it looks impressive nonetheless.
