EA's Riccitiello says game discs aren't going away
While Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello thinks digital distribution will finally outstrip its physical counterpart in 2011, he stops short of predicting the demise of retail packaging. In the second part of an interview conducted by Industry Gamers, the EA bossman sings the praises of the disc and debunks trendy cloud computing-based notions of gaming's near future. "Sometimes you're not going to play because your internet connection is down and sometimes delivering a game by streaming is a really inefficient way to do it," Riccitiello says, in what might be music to the ears of gaming luddites dismayed at the thought of renouncing actual ownership of their collections. Riccitiello goes on to posit that services like OnLive will struggle with latency-dependent titles (your average first person shooter, for example) and ultimately concludes that the days of 100% digital delivery are pretty far into the future.
EA names new president of global publishing, COO
Amidst its hostile bid to absorb competitor Take Two, which is playing out with all the drama befitting daytime TV, Electronic Arts has announced the appointment of John Pleasants as the company's new chief operating officer and president of global publishing. He will report directly to CEO John Riccitiello, and in his new role the exec will lead the charge in EA's global publishing, corporate communications and government affairs -- someone's gonna have his hands full.He will also be getting his hands dirty helping manage EA's online, central development, and technology teams as well. Pleasants' previous experience includes top executive positions as multiple companies including Ticketmaster, meaning that he already likely has a great deal of experience at nickel-and-diming customers into oblivion. We expect him to fit right in.
Riccitello rejoins EA as new CEO
Former Electronic Arts President and COO John Riccitello is returning to the publishing behemoth. On April 2, Riccitello will become the new chief executive officer, while current EA CEO Larry Probst will stay on as executive chairman of the board of directors.Probst held the position of Big Kahuna since 1991. During his time, the company has steadily solidified its position as supreme being in the world of game publishing, made seven more Madden iterations, saw firsthand the awe-inspiring financial powerhouse that is Will Wright's The Sims (and its subsequent sequels / expansion packs) and who at one point abstained from letting EA publish M-rated titles. (The latter position did not last: EA's first M-rated title was Quake III for the PlayStation 2 in 2000.)Riccitello left EA in 2004 to co-found Elevation Partners with, among others, U2 singer Bono.
