They've returned... the scourge of Paragon City, the greatest threat to Earth that the world has ever known, and the source of much player excitement. After a long hiatus, the Rikti invasion has returned to City of Heroes, and that means players can start enjoying the war against the invaders all over again. Running until 11:59 p.m. PDT on November 7th, the invasion will span all of the game's zones and force players to work together to defeat the alien threat. If you've taken part in one of the smaller triggered invasions that have hit the game every so often, you'll be ready for the mechanics but not the scope. If you've never seen the even before, however, it's a great chance for players to bond and take part in one of the more dynamic live events the game has to offer. Rikti attacks can take place in any zone of the game and will be running on a regular basis for the duration. And if you think you need to take your City of Heroes character through the event in style, might we suggest taking a look at our ongoing contest for the new Origin Pack?

If you've played City of Heroes, you know who the Rikti are -- the dangerous race from beyond our dimension who invaded and nearly destroyed Paragon City. Over time they've slowly become less of a threat, but they've never truly left, and amidst all the talk of Praetorian invasion they've decided to remind heroes and villains alike who they're dealing with. That's right, it's time to get ready for another brawl for the fate of humanity as the full-scale Rikti Invasion returns to the live servers. Paragon Studios has announced that the invasion will commence at 9:00 a.m. PDT on November 4th and last until midnight PDT on November 7th, giving players ample time to take part in the battle against the invaders. While lesser invasions have happened from time to time, the full-scale invasion has been on hiatus for a while, but it remains one of the more popular server events. And if you're a new player to City of Heroes, it's your chance to see one of the biggest enemy groups in the game face-to-face. Fair warning, however -- despite what the header might suggest, most of the Rikti do not simply wish to dance at the tailor.

As many City of Heroes players know, this last week has been chock full of great xp and adventure. What could possibly make heroes show up en masse and lay the smack down? How about an enormous Rikti invasion? Sure, the Rikti gave us the technology that allows us to teleport here and there, rez in the hospitals and whatnot, but when the aliens show up, it's time to protect Paragon City. The above City of Heroes One Shots was snapped by this blogger during an invasion in Talos Island just a few days ago, showing the teeming masses of heroes defending the Virtue server from invasion. If you've been involved in an invasion, RvR, PvP, or an awesome storyline, we want to see your screenshots! Just send them to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name/group/server and a quick description. We'll format them up and post them for the world to see, and you'll get all the credit. %Gallery-9798%

You may or may not have heard, but we're coming to Planetside to kick some worldwide hide. At least that's the plan, but whatever happens -- win or lose -- I'm just excited to be a part of an epic, cataclysmic in-game event. It's the kind of thing I've always wanted to see more of but somehow I rarely see these sorts of things happen in massively multiplayer online games. There are smaller yearly events that are always fun, sure. It would just be nice to see more events minimally on the scale of City of Heroes' Rikti invasions or today's Planetside Black Ops event. Whether or not developers haven't really explored this area because they fear player backlash is beyond me. I personally don't see how creating a dynamic world that keeps its players guessing at the next twist or turn isn't worth a little risk. Then again I'm all about dynamic, awe-inspiring, world changing events.

The official forums are reporting that the Rikti are back, once again, to give the City of Heroes a general pounding. Lighthouse shares the sad news that the invasion will be taking place this weekend, and well into next week. Starting today and through to June 19th, random sorties of Rikti aliens can be expected throughout the Paragon City region. Heroes interested in participating can find full details at the site. Essentially gameplay boils down to finding the biggest group of players in a given zone, and then hanging tough as the creeps from beyond the stars put the smackdown on your cape and cowl. If you do participate make sure to keep in mind what you need to kill in order to collect your badges. The world event can hand out a total of four, and no well-heeled Hero would go without his "Watchman" title.

Reader Julien offers up this screenshot directly from the Rogue Isles in City of Villains (or at least we think that's where it's from -- our screenshot archiving ferrets at One Shots don't have time to play a lot of games). During the Rikti Invasion of Issue 10, where Rikti attacks could be seen in a variety of ways -- such as this bomb in the middle of the street. Julien explains this particular shot by saying, "Because everyone knows that you stop a ticking bomb by hitting it with fire monkeys."Snapped any good screenshots recently? Reader Julien sends in this shot from the Rikti Invasion event introduced to City of Heroes (and Villains!) in Issue 11. We're looking at one of the Rikti dropships closeup, as it sails the skies prepared to fire, Julien tells us, at any arrogant heroes or villains getting too close.
