WoW Moviewatch: Not Your Ordinary Kind of Harlem Shake
I'm conflicted on this video. On one hand, it references the Harlem Shake, which is a meme that's pretty much run its course. I feel like we've been down that road. On the other hand, Not Your Ordinary Kind of Harlem Shake is more a machinima about the after-effects of the video. The shaking itself only takes up a minute portion of the video. Romire is getting further with his scripting and action. Not Your Ordinary Kind of Harlem Shake features much more narrative cohesion than any of his previous videos; he clearly had an idea from beginning to end. On the other hand, I still feel like the plot could have moved faster and tied up more quickly. All in all, it's a solid effort worth a few minutes of your time. WoW Moviewatch: Tree Assassin
Tree Assassin is the new offering from Romire Vids. It's kind of an odd creation, a little out of character from his usual efforts. You might recognize some of the guest voice actors; Romire certainly has a talent for bringing together diverse YouTube personalities. I had some odd trouble following the plot. It felt kind of disjointed to me, though it's hard to explain why. The submarine-like pinging sound during stealth moments was a funny touch, though. Interested in the wide world of machinima? WoW Moviewatch: Broken Hearted
Romire's new video, Broken Hearted, is actually a remake of a much earlier machinima. He's done a lot to clean up and improve the video. There's some new music, a new scene, and a retailored ending. Most importantly, he repaired the lag issues that destructively plagued the original. This new video is a vast improvement over Romire's first attempt; compare it against the original and you'll quickly see the differences. The animation is much smoother and the world is well served by losing the glow-in-the-dark subtitles. I also feel Romire's new music choices are stronger; the music in the first version felt a little random, while the new soundtrack is definitely more thematic. WoW Moviewatch: Ties That Bind
Yesterday, Romire released his newest video, Ties That Bind. You can see how Romire's been focused on improving his technical skills, stepping up his color mastery, and otherwise refining the visual effects of his videos. Ties That Bind shows huge improvement in that arena. Since Romire takes his work seriously, he's asked for some constructive feedback. I'd start with some tight narration and plot editing. While Romire obviously had a story in mind with Ties That Bind, it's easy to lose track of the plot point over 11 minutes. While long-form videos are certainly viable, it's usually best to maintain a very tight narrative focus in machinima. Famous pieces like Tales of the Past and Return are masterpieces for a reason; not every machinima can mimic that level of complexity or epic narration. There were a few jokes in the video, like a brief Mortal Kombat shout-out. Stuff like that is awesome, but it felt out of place in a longer, more serious video. Visually, I think Romire's come a long, long way. But for the next piece, I'd aim for a short, simple plot to start polishing the storytelling. Interested in the wide world of machinima? WoW Moviewatch: Gnomey Love
Gnomey Love is the most recent video by RomireVids. This is the story of a gnome who gets dumped by his human girlfriend and then punted to Azuremyst Isle. While on the island, he enjoys a brief, one-sided romance with a shaman before traveling back to Azeroth. Once home, the gnome falls in love with a new gnome girl because he likes big butts, and he can not lie. Gnomey Love is an interesting video, conceptually. I can see where Romire was going with it. Romire says that he was challenged with technical problems during the video's creation, and I think some of those problems showed in the final product. Still, this was a significant effort, and my hat's off to Romire for his work. I would recommend grabbing a copy editor in the next round, however, to help minimize some grammatical errors in the script. Interested in the wide world of machinima? WoW Moviewatch: Moments in Life
Moments in Life is an odd little movie. A human is lingering around town and trying to find something to do with his time. First, the human encounters a priest who berates him in public. Then he comes across a tauren woman. The man feels compelled to pick a fight with the tauren, who then completely loses her mind and beats him up. The human parks his butt where he can mope, when a night elf woman offers to help out. There's a quick cut, and then we find out they spent the night together. I don't really know what to make of the video. I think we can definitely see the earmarks of Romire's attempts to improve his skills. There are some places where I wonder if the animation went a little wonky or if there were artistic choices being made, but overall, the animation was pretty smooth. The script just felt choppy to me and a little exaggerated. Not necessarily my favorite piece ever, but I think Moments in Life shows promise for the future. WoW Moviewatch: For the Horde: The Final Journey
For the Horde: The Final Journey is a sort of tribute movie about RomireVid's efforts to reach level 80 on his hunter. You can think of it as a kind of send-off, a trailer and a memorial all at the same time. RavenSylphe was clearly a collaborator in the movie, but Romire also thanks Cryssy, Wakagana and Sporcy. The foundation of For the Horde is all right, but there are a few places where this style could use some polish. The voice acting didn't click for me, but that kind of thing is personal preference. However, I think using a consistent font for the movie subtitles would have helped it immensely. It's a bit distracting for each language flash to be in a different font style. I like seeing how Romire is growing his videos, and it'll definitely be interesting to see where he goes next. Interested in the wide world of machinima?
