Nikon S630 unboxing and hands-on: pretty in pink edition
What's that, another compact digital camera unboxing? Yes, dear readers, we've got a mega-megapixel story cooking for you, and another ingredient has arrived. This time it's Nikon's Coolpix S630, a 12 megapixel, 7x optical zoom compact that features optical stabilization and a particularly vibrant hue. So far we're impressed by the camera's shape, lightness, and build quality, but this one has plenty more testing ahead of it before we make any solid conclusions. Until then, enjoy a few shots of its unveiling.
Nikon unveils eight new Coolpix cams
Nikon just dropped the refresh bomb on its Coolpix line, adding eight new point-and-shoots like the P90 here to the family. Here's the rundown: Coolpix S230 and S220: 10 megapixels with a touchscreen that lets you write and draw on your photos. Both have four-way VR image stabilization, blink detection, and are available in several colors; the $229 S230 bumps the screen to three inches from the $149 S220's two and a half and adds ISO 2000 sensitivity. Coolpix S630: 12 megapixels with a 7x optical zoom and an 11fps burst mode, a 2.7-inch LCD, four-way VR image stabilization, blink detection and ISO 6400 sensitivity. Available in five colors for $279. S620: 12.2 megapixels with a 4x zoom, 0.7-second startup time, subject tracking, four-way VR image stabilization, blink / motion detection and ISO 6400 sensitivity. Also available in five colors for $269. Coolpix P90: 12.1 megapixel zoomer with a 24x 26-624mm zoom and 15fps burst mode, 3-inch tilt screen, four-way VR image stabilization, blink / motion detection, distortion control and ISO 6400 sensitivity. $339 in March. Coolpix L100: 10 megapixel with a 15x 28-420mm zoom and a 13fps burst mode, 3-inch screen and four-way VR image stabilization. Only comes in Bright Red for $279 in March. Coolpix L20: 10 megapixels with a 3.6x zoom and a 3-inch display, motion detection and auto scene selection. AA-powered, will come in Deep Red for $129. Coolpix L19: 8 megapixels with a 3.6 zoom and a 2.7-inch display, motion detection and auto scene selection. AA-powered, will come in Bright Silver for $109. Not bad at all, but you've got to wonder why all these companies insist on cranking out so many minior variations on the same theme -- the average consumer has no chance of keeping up. HTC Cavalier lands in retail as S630
the HTC Cavalier has arrived and can be had online for only $565 dollars -- yeah we're with ya, that's a bit steep. This is an ideal handset to replace an aging BlackJack and we -- and we're sure many of you -- hope it gets comfy in AT&T's stable in the coming months. If you just can't wait, kick that old nasty Excalibur to the curb and hit up the Expansys site before they're gone.
Samsung touts six still cameras, to be released this spring
Samsung's been pretty busy as of late, releasing everything from a new RFID fridge to the new i760 slider. But don't think that it was skimping on the digital camera side of things, no sir. Good ol' Sammie's got a sextet of shooters slated for release this spring (sans pricing on all of 'em, sadly) -- so let's get started. First up at the top of the heap is the S1050 (pictured), a point-and-shoot weighing in at 10.1 megapixels, 5x optical zoom lens, 3-inch screen, SD slot, 1600 ISO and a shutter speed that gets all the way up to 1/2000th of a second. It can also shoot video anywhere from 160 x 128 to 800 x 600 at 20fps. Moving along, we've got the S850, which packs its 8.1 megapixel lens and a 5x optical zoom and the same maximum ISO and shutter speed as its older bro. It'll also do video, as expected, from 320 x 240 to 800 x 592 at 30fps, except the highest setting forces a drop down to 20 fps. Third of six is the S730, a seven megapixel shooter with a 3x optical zoom, 2.5-inch LCD, 1600 ISO and 1/2000th of a second shutter speed. But don't think that just 'cause this model has a smaller number that Samsung is lowering the video features on this bad boy -- you'll get a respectable 640 x 480 resolution at 30fps. Fourth on our list is the L700: it's an awful lot like the S730 as far as specs go (they're identical), however, from what we can tell the L700 has a little bit more of a compact design. Also in the L line is the L73, a "sleek and pocket-sized" cam that comes with a seven megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, 1600 ISO and that same shutter speed that we've seen so far. This one also offers Sammie's "Face Recognition Technology" which will adjust for optimal image quality in portraits. Bringing up the rear is the S630, a six megapixel camera with a 2.5-inch screen and two video settings in 320 x 240 and 640 x 480 at 30fps. Want more details? Kinpo's Tin becomes iDo S630
Whether Kinpo planned this name change all along or it was a last-minute decision after realizing that tin is a nearly worthless, weak, and altogether uninspiring metal, we don't know, but either way, the Tin has become the iDo S630. Our American readers might want to stop reading this right about now, seeing how the rather attractive Pocket PC phone lacks GSM 850, EDGE, and any sort of 3G data -- on the other hand, our friends hangin' out in Asia probably want to pay close attention here: the mid-range device is going to come packing Bluetooth with A2DP, a 2-megapixel cam, 128MB of Flash, 64MB of RAM, WiFi, miniSD expansion, and a Freescale i.MX21 clocked at a reasonable 350MHz. It sounds like Kinpo hasn't quite gotten around to getting the S630 out the door yet, but when it does, expect to find them for about HK$4,180 (about $540).
