This week is certainly the largest single update the Japanese Wii Shop has had since the launch of the Virtual Console back in December of 2006. It's also, sadly, a feat that probably won't be repeated, given the recent decline in selection. But let's not talk about declines when we've got such an incredible increase this month! Four games on Virtual Console -- and good ones, too, like Final Fantasy IV and Pac-Mania, would be remarkable enough, but they are joined by no fewer than nine on WiiWare. The WiiWare selection includes genuinely interesting content like Bit.Trip: CORE, the one-button Tomenasanner Wii (seen above), and the three Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games; plus genuinely forgettable content like Sandy Beach, and wild cards like dolphin-training game Sea Farm, Derby Dog, which is, yes, a game about racing different varieties of dog, and a brain training game with its most notable feature being that its title translates to "Make your Square Brain Round."The complete release listings are posted after the break.

While not all of Hudson's WiiWare offerings are necessarily successful in terms of sales or critical response, they've been responsible for some of the best, and best-selling, games on the service. And even when they don't do so well, effort is evident. So why can't Hudson's parent company, Konami, take a lesson from their subsidiary? Since the launch of the service, they've released only two games: Critter Round-Up and this. So they've released, like, one and a quarter games.Sandy Beach is a baffling release -- in that I can't fathom how Konami saw this and decided there was enough game to be worth releasing. It's really two games, but the sum fails to provide enough value for the 500 Wii Point cost. %Gallery-31918%

WiiWareSandy Beach (Konami, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): First, the good news: Yes, you can build sand castles in this game, either at your leisure or facing off against swarms of crabs in the Defend Your Castle-esque Crab Battle mode. The bad news? Well, it wasn't the first Crab Battle that came to mind ...Virtual ConsoleKirby's Dream Land 3 (Super NES™, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): This title had the unfortunate luck of coming out within a week of the incredibly awesome Kirby Superstar -- great timing, Nintendo! Still, it's a fun game that happens to be just like its predecessors. We half expect the company to pull some poetic injustice and release Superstar on Virtual Console next week.%Gallery-31937%

Nobody likes crabs. In various contexts, they're just a pain. So, perhaps Konami and developer Frozen Codebase are tapping into some perfect hatred here with WiiWare title Sandy Beach. Beyond the screenshots (found in the gallery below), we did get in touch with the game's producer, Eric Francksen. He tells us there are two modes in the game: One is just "free play" where players build their own castles, while the other is "crab battle." Sandy Beach's crab battle game is reminiscent of Rampart or Defend Your Castle. Players are tasked with surviving waves of pirate crabs, then rebuilding and adding defenses between waves. We were told that Konami will reveal a release date at a later time.%Gallery-31937%

And it also takes place on a beach. Be sure to hit up our gallery below for more screens and we'll be sure to update you all with info as soon as it comes along. %Gallery-31918% [Via Siliconera]
