We still haven't seen all of LG's next premium phone, the G5, but tonight it's unveiling two interesting midrange handsets. Dubbed the Specialist X Series, the X cam and X screen are both fairly basic phones with Android Marshmallow 6.0, quad-core CPUs, 2GB of RAM and a smallish 16GB of storage for what we assume will be a reasonable price. As you can probably guess, each one then brings a extra...special feature.

Specialist gaming outfit Digital Storm has busted out its new X17E gaming laptop, designed to keep you entertained without too much grunting. The 17-inch unit comes with a 1,920 x 1,080 display, a choice of GeForce GTX 680M or Radeon 7970M and an Intel Core i7-3910XM, which the company's engineers reckon can be stably overclocked to a whopping 4.5GHz. It's got the usual raft of features you'd expect in a high end unit, including support for 32GB RAM, USB 3.0, eSATA, Blu-Ray and a backlit keyboard you can tweak to your needs. The base model will be out at the end of September, setting you back $1,753, while a signature edition with a custom paint-job will come later, and cost you more.

  • Apple brings Specialists online in four countries, lets us ask questions before we buy

Apple's latest tweak to its online store has now included a real-life genius Specialist that you can chat to if you're undecided about buying your next iPhone or iPad. If you're based in the UK, Germany, Spain or Brazil, you can surf to either product page, and an "Ask Now" button in the top right corner will offer you a choice of a phone-chat, instant messaging or a guided tour. The staffers can even help set up your newest handset once you've purchased it -- or just let you chat to someone if you're feeling lonely. If we have a worry, it's that this might be one of John Browett's schemes to cut costs, but let's hope he isn't dreaming of a future where Cupertino's personal touch is entirely replaced with an IM chat to someone in a call center. Update: A reader took the time to point out that Geniuses are technical support reps, while Apple staffers in sales roles are more properly called Specialists. We've corrected the post to reflect that.

  • Leaderboard: Hybrid vs. specialist

When it comes to that all-too-important decision at the character creation screen, you must decide off the bat whether or not you're going to mold your new hero into a finely tune specialized machine or to pick a class that sports as much flexibility and gas-saving technology as a hybrid allows. This decision has long-reaching consequences on your future journeys with the character, so choosing wisely means knowing yourself and your playstyle intimately. But which is better, overall? Is it better to gun for a specialized class? After all, this allows you to be the absolute best you can be at a singular role, to get those high numbers and fulfill your purpose well. Specialists are prized in endgame activities, since being at the top of one's form is vital to helping your group succeed. However, are hybrids ultimately better due to their jack-of-all-trades flexibility? Is having the option to switch between roles on the fly more crucial to individual and group success than being locked into one thing only? Hybrids also allow for more choice down the road, especially when you might be getting bored of a particular role and want to experiment with something else. So which will top today's Leaderboard: hybrids or specialists? Hit the jump to cast your vote!

  • Behind the Mask: Comparing the archetype bruisers

A lot of people seem to get the wrong idea about Champions Online's Gold archetypes. For the most part, the Gold archetypes are simply different options to play with. As I mentioned previously, the Master is kind of an exception, since it's the only dedicated archetype tank. However, this does not mean that the Master is the beat-all-end-all or that Gold archetypes are outright superior to Silver ones. For the most part, the Silver archetypes are better at their focused roles than the comparable Gold archetypes. This week, we're going to look at the damage-soaking tanky archetypes and compare them. I'll also give a quick comparison between these bruisers and a comparable freeform hero. There's quite a few to cover, so let's get to it!

  • Eizo industrial monitor does 4K resolution at 36-inches, start saving now

Looking for a display that can do justice to all that 4K footage you've been shooting on your Red One or Arri Alexa lately? Okay, perhaps not. But if you were, then the DuraVision FDH3601 from Eizo Nanao could handle it easily with 4096 x 2160 pixels spread over 36.4-inches of LED-backlit real estate. It comes with another big number too: a price tag of ¥2.88 million ($36,000), which gently hints at the fact that this beast is primarily aimed at specialist industrial applications. Eizo claims it's perfect for air traffic control, where staff can make full use of specs like "Digital Uniformity Correction" circuitry to compensate for uneven color or brightness, motion sensors to power the monitor on or off as needed, and a stand that can be minutely adjusted to get the perfect angle. Suddenly, despite the heavy burden of responsibility and the fact that you have to keep your phone switched off all the time, that career choice seems almost worth it.

  • The Daily Grind: Do you play specialist or generalist characters?

Myself, I'm a jack-of-all-trades type of player. If there's a class, profession or build out there that allows me to do a wide variety of things OK, then you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be playing it. Sure, I never hit the top of the DPS or healing charts, but the freedom of choice that generalist builds allow me more than makes up for it. Classes are easy to define as either "specialist" or "generalist" if you're painting with a broad brush, although the truth is that many specialist classes and roles have generalist aspects, and generalist classes often can be specialized. So I think it all boils down to what you like to play and how you like to play it. So what do you enjoy more: playing specialist or generalist characters? Would you rather do a narrow range of actions really, really well, or a wide range of actions decently but not exceptionally? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

  • Calling all Exobiologists, developer feedback requested

When most people sit down to think about class types in MMOs, I would wager that the majority would conjur up images of spell-tossing wizards or muscular blade-wielding warriors. Few classes in recent memory seem as unintuitive as Tabula Rasa's Exobiologist class. A biologist running around in massive battles with lasers and machine guns being fired overhead? Now that just seems silly. Or at least, until you really take a good look at it; the tier 4 abilities make it obvious that the Exobiologist is really just a high-tech hybrid version of a necromancer, able to bring corpses back to life to fight by their side.Problem is, like many of the other Specialist classes, the Exobiologist is still gimped quite a bit compared to its Soldier counterparts. As part of the promised changes to the specialist classes, the developers are reportedly calling for player feedback on the Tabula Rasa Vault forums. Take this as your opportunity to call for a boost in pet damage, and fight for your Exobiologist rights! Maybe if they got a buff I'd actually see one in action one of these days...

  • TR demolitionist shows how a novelty build goes boom

Their game having only been out for two months now, Tabula Rasa players really haven't been able to indulge in the curious wonder that is the novelty build. You know the type; that player who directs a veritable laser focus on making his character excel in a very specific, though usually not entirely practical or ordinary aspect of his game du jour. The difficulty of building one of these hyper-specialists varies from game to game, and Tabula Rasa's casual-friendly cloning dynamic favors this kind of experimentation and specialization. The video shown above, plucked from the Planet TR forums, shows a player named Kore from the Cassiopeia server demonstrating the extraordinary explosive potential of a speed freak demolitionist build. Seeing a demolitionist at all is rare enough, as the specialist classes still haven't seen the full buff that the designers have promised, but spotting a demolitionist decked out in motor assist armor and popping pump 5 sprint is perhaps rarer still. Looks pretty fun to me though.

  • Paul Sage promises changes for Specialist classes

Hey all you Specialists out there! Feeling a bit down? Tired of your Soldier friends flaunting those fancy chainguns and graviton armor while you run through the Plains in motor assist? Sick of throwing heals at pick up groups who forget you're even there? Well hang in there friends, because Paul Sage has the answer for you! According to the erstwhile Tabula Rasa designer, many of the changes in patch 1.3 are aimed at shoring up some of the weaknesses in the Biotech and Medic trees, including an AE damage/heal for the Biotech and a big debuff ability in Disease for Medics.Perhaps more importantly, Sage revealed that they're going to be tweaking the significance of attributes to try and make Health a more meaningful statistic, instead of its utility now, which is basically just a rough estimation of how long it will be until you die once your armor is worn down. These changes won't be coming until 1.4, so they may be over a month away, but it's reason enough to go back to level 5 and retry that Specialist clone again, if you haven't already.

Once again we return to that special place in the adventuring party, the back row. The thin line between disaster and success, the party healer is the glue that binds a crew together. This column is a testament to everyone that puts their heart and soul into the supporting role of the online gaming world.Last week we talked a bit about the Tabula Rasa tier 2 healing class, the Specialist. That class sets out the basics of healing in the game, using tools and the leech gun to assist the more militant members of the AFS in their duties against the Bane. This week we'll move on to the tier 3 class, the Biotechnician. Gaining another class-specific weapon and our first Logos healing power, we're faced with a number of thorny choices as to how to develop just within the powers we have available to us now. And, as always is the case in new games, there are still a number of best practice choices still to make. The forums are still very much abuzz with the possibilities of the the healing classes. Let's see if we can work out some of the best choices for AFS healers-in-training, and we'll talk about a few issues newly introduced to TR's supporting cast. In the meantime, what do the Biotechs think? Hazmat or Bio Body Armor?

Given that Tabula Rasa is still so new, I'm going to focus for the time being on getting my fellow healbots up to speed. Unlike other games that have dedicated class systems, the tiered system in TR requires that you 'want it'; you have to choose the right class and specifically allocate skill points in order to keep your fellow soldiers on their feet. Today we'll start slow, by going over the basics of the Specialist class. We'll talk about her tools of the trade, and begin running down some of the particular challenges of being a healer in Tabula Rasa. If you're an AFS healer, speak up in the comments, because I want to know: how the heck do you keep your teammates targetted?

  • Tabula Rasa players ask: where's the rage?

    by

    11.24.2007

One of the biggest questions that Tabula Rasa players have had since the new patch went out on the public test realm has been: what happened to the nerf to Rage that the devs had been rumored to be talking about? Rage is an attack enhancement for those in the Soldier tree that, when fully pumped, offers a temporary 100% buff to damage output. Outside of maybe Training: Weapons, Rage is probably the most ubiquitous skill choice people take, and is almost directly responsible for the huge imbalance between the Soldier and Specialist trees. Destination Games had been proposing a reduction of the damage buff down to 25%, but it was conspicuously absent from the patch notes. We still haven't heard anything official from the developers themselves, but the rumor so far has been pervasive. We weren't able to track down the original source of the rumor, though threads discussing it can be found on most RGTR forums. It's something that makes sense from a balance standpoint and that is the topic du jour in general chat, so we'll see if we can't get any official word. In the meantime, keep an eye on the patch note pages to see if any incremental updates pop up on the PTR.

  • Britain's CSR developing uber-sensitive Bluetooth / GPS hybrid chip

Considering how governments are suddenly feeling that tracking your every move, or at least providing the means for someone else to, is such a brilliant idea, it's no surprise to see the Bluetooth masters at Cambridge-based CSR buy up NordNav and Cambridge Positioning Systems. The new mishmash of companies now has consolidation on the brain, as it's developing an all-in-one microchip that will sport both Bluetooth and GPS functionality on a single module. Additionally, the chip would reportedly "drain less power and be cheaper for handset makers than having two separate chips in their devices," as both technologies would have one processor doing the work, resulting in a more efficient process. The company's CEO claimed that its combo chips would cost manufacturers "an extra dollar per chip as opposed to around $5 to $10 for putting in a current standalone GPS chip," and moreover, these devices are designed to be ultra-sensitive, giving it connection abilities indoors and in "deep urban areas" where current units fall short. Already being hit up by a few anonymous mobile producers, CSR plans to get these things shipping "during the first half of this year," and hopes to start turning a profit on them by 2008.
