A few more pieces from Atari's intellectual property catalog, which has been on clearance sale for a little while now, have new owners. Of note is the Total Annihilation and Master of Orion franchises being picked up by World of Tanks developer Wargaming World Limited, while the Star Control series is now in the hands of Galactic Civilizations developer Stardock. "We're very excited to publish a new Star Control game. We are inclined to go with an XCOM-like reboot using Star Control 2 as a major source of inspiration," said Brad Wardell, president and CEO of Stardock to Joystiq. "By rebooting the series á la XCOM, we can bring a new generation of gamers into a fun, silly space adventure. We hope to involve as many of the original designers and developers of the series, along with the fan base. It's important to us that Star Control remain true to its origins as much as is possible." Wargaming has yet to respond to our request about its plans. We've placed the list of the latest Atari IP winners after the break. The winning bids were not disclosed.

What better way to wait for the iOS release of Another World (or, as the more American among you may know it, Out of this World) than by playing Another World? The beautifully remastered 15th Anniversary edition of Eric Chahi's cinematic side-scroller is available from GOG right now for $3.99 as part of a 24-hour sale. It'll return to its normal $10 price tomorrow at 6AM EDT. This sale is a "GOG Gems" promotion -- the retailer offers a deep discount on a catalog item every third Wednesday, with the stated effort of introducing players to classics they may not have played yet. GOG refers to it as a "curated promo." Oh, and while you've got your credit card out -- Star Control 1 and 2 are on GOG in a $6 bundle. If you've never played either, then you're missing out on not only a great strategic experience, but awesome spaceship combat as well.

Stardock keeps 4X strategy gamers' hearts aflutter with word that it's trying to get the rights to Star Control or Master of Orion. Of course, if the publisher can't get them, like what happened with its recent attempt for the Master of Magic rights, Stardock can always just circumvent and make its own franchise -- thus, Elemental: War of Magic was born.Stardock CEO Brad Wardell tells Gamasutra that the company would base its SC or MoO sequel off the second games in the respective franchises and not the poorly received third iterations. Wardell also confirms that Stardock is currently building a second full internal development team. Given the company's release strategy, whatever game it decides to do, we won't see it until 2011 or beyond.
