  • TUAW's Daily App: Cartolina

Cartolina is an app that I noticed over on the great Drawn! illustration blog. While you might not want to get it yourself (it's the thought that counts with greeting cards, and I think that, with both cards and letters, the real thing is still better), you can't disagree that the art of this one is pretty incredible. Cartolina is originally a stationery company, printing cards and letterheads with elaborate and elegant designs on them, but they've also released an iPhone app. For US$2.99, you get access to nine different artistic templates, which can then be made into beautiful email or text messages. It's not a big deal (and it's no substitute for actually writing someone a letter -- something I already don't do enough of), but for classing up the standard congratulatory or simply nice email or text message, it'll work wonders. The app also has a built-in calendar with reminders of major events, and the app promises even more designs and features coming soon. Again, if you already have a schedule and a plan for sending greeting cards, the app probably won't interest you that much. But it's always nice to send someone a reminder that you're thinking of them, and having Cartolina around might help you do just that.

A couple months ago we reviewed SodaSnap, a free application for the iPhone that allows you to send postcards. SodaSnap didn't allow you much flexibility, and was definitely not an iCard replacement. However, Memento for iPhone and iPod touch [iTunes link], which brings Mail.app-like stationery to everyone's favorite mobile platform, is a better alternative. Each "stationery theme" allows you to add one picture and some text to the message. When you open the application, you are presented with a screen that shows all the messages saved as drafts, plus the ones that you've already sent. To start a new message, tap the "+" in the top-right corner of the screen. To add a picture, just tap in the gray area with the camera icon. A popup menu will ask if you want to take a new picture or browse for one in your photo library. Once you've selected the image, it will be placed in the gray area. This application is solid and has some nice themes to choose from. There is still room for improvement, however. I would like to see more themes (the 14 provided themes are nice, but they get old after a while). I would also like to see the ability to add more text, as you currently can only add a small snippet to your message. This is one of those applications that is just cool, and it has a variety of uses. If you're looking to surprise Grandma with pictures of her grandkids, then this is the application for you. You can download Memento for $2.99 (US) from the iTunes App Store. %Gallery-36741%

Have you used Mail's stationery and thought that it was too limiting or did not appeal to your tastes? With a simple save button, you can create your own stationery to be exactly the way you want it. Just create a new Mail message, filling in the body as you see fit -- use special formatting, colors, even filler text. When you have completed your stationery template, click File > Save As Stationery. A dialog box will prompt you to name your new creation. Enter a descriptive title and click "Save." Your new stationery will appear under "Custom" whenever you click the "Show Stationery" button in a new mail message. Clicking your template name will automatically recreate your template in the body of the new message. This is handy for businesses or individuals who need to have custom formatted emails, and need them to be uniform each time they send them.Like this tip? Want more? Leopard has been delayed, we know, so let's pretend it's October with this gallery at ThinkSecret of build 9A410 (while we're at it, Hackint0sh has a gallery as well). This time around we see a number of UI improvements (like the screenshot of Automator at right) and lots of shots of Mail's new "Stationery" feature. Personally, I find image-heavy HTML email annoying, but what do I know?Sit back, browse the gallery and tell yourself, "It's almost October...It's almost October..."

Available for pick-up in Akihabara, Japan (or via the world wide wub), this DS Lite stationery set is made from HORI, who you may know are responsible for some of the best accessories available for Nintendo's dual-screened beauty. The kit includes everything the DS Lite lover/workaholic could need for their handheld, including: DS Lite pencil case Pencil-shaped stylus Eraser-like cleaner attached to strap Now, if after reading that you're still confused, realize that these items only look like stationery. That pencil isn't real, it's just an oddball way to enjoy certain games on your DS Lite. Boy, people aren't going to believe what they're seeing when you whip out a huge pencil and start writing all over the touch-screen.[Via JeanSnow]
