Sega is set to release its Genesis Mini retro console in September, with a line-up of 40 games. It revealed ten of them when it announced the system's release date last month, and now it's taken the wrapper off another bunch of titles.

As the haze begins to lift from last week's media circus, we hope you're in the mood to play games from your favorite genre. As long as that includes obscure 16-bit shooters, as this week's Virtual Console additions include a pair of Genesis-era side-scrolling shmups designed to keep you flying horizontally and mashing the fire button all night long. Super Fantasy Zone (Genesis, 1 player, 900 Wii Points): The lesser-known follow up to Sega's Master System original, this shooter will have you scrolling sideways as you shoot down bad guys and collect cold coins in ultra-colorful fashion. Gley Lancer (Genesis, 1 player, 900 Wii Points): It's the year 2025, the Earth is at odds with an alien race, and the hope for humanity rests on the shoulders of a 16-year old girl named Lucia. Just be home before midnight, young lady.

After all of the fun to be had at E3, it's time to get back to business as usual. Nintendo knows this, which is why the Virtual Console and WiiWare have both updated this week. So, let's get to the details already! This week's WiiWare release is: Pirates: The Key of Dreams (1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points) This week's Virtual Console releases are: Super Fantasy Zone (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 900 Wii Points) Gley Lancer (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 900 Wii Points) And, before you ask, yes, those are the correct prices (both games are imports).[Via press release]

Maybe "monstrous" is overdoing it, but after last week's no-show for the Virtual Console, we're back to five games for this Friday's PAL region VC update. Hurrah! These range from forgettable spin-offs (Pac-Attack -- the first SNES title we've seen in over three months, bizarrely) to a Commodore 64 fan favorite (Cybernoid) to SNK's excellent King of the Monsters, which probably hasn't been bettered in the monsters-breaking-stuff genre since its release. Super Fantasy Zone -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii Points Pac-Attack -- SNES -- 800 Wii Points Summer Games 2 -- Commodore 64 -- 500 Wii Points Cybernoid -- Commodore 64 -- 500 Wii Points King of the Monsters -- Neo Geo -- 900 Wii Points We have some videos featuring some of the above for you, but you'll have to smash the break down with your giant monster limbs to access them.

The Virtual Console is home to a lot of scrolling shooters. It seems like every week, at least one of the releases in every region is a shmup. This week, three of the four games coming out in Japan are shooters. But after years of seeing the once-prominent genre fall into obscurity, we really don't mind having a download service full of the things. For that matter, the same goes for side-scrolling brawlers, one of which is the other Japanese release this week. The VC is a great system for that genre, Renegade notwithstanding. Axelay (Super Famicom, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) Super Fantasy Zone (Mega Drive, 1 player, 600 Wii Points) Star Parodier (PC Engine, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) Burning Fight (Neo Geo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)

  • Super Fantasy Zone, Pengo rated for American VC release

We love it when import-only games find their way to our Virtual Console! We also love Sega classics. So we're thoroughly pleased to see Super Fantasy Zone and Pengo, Genesis entries in two iconic Sega series, rated on the ESRB. Super Fantasy Zone is the last in a series of brightly-colored, Defender-like free-scrolling shooter starring the Opa-Opa. Pengo is a remake of a 1982 arcade puzzle game of the same name, about a penguin who pushes ice blocks around to destroy enemies, much like Kickle Cubicle or Adventures of Lolo. What's most surprising about the appearance of these two games on the ESRB is that they haven't been released on the Virtual Console in any other region! Sega said they were planning to release more imports; we just assumed they'd be things that were already on the Japanese VC. [Via Siliconera]
