by Jared Rea Let me lay a hypothetical on you. Let's say that tomorrow, a major update is released for StarCraft 2, League of Legends, Team Fortress 2 or whatever your favorite, tightly balanced competitive online game may be. This update greatly reduces the effectiveness of many of your trusty techniques, but delivers a handful of overwhelming improvements to a select few others. It's fair to assume that the outrage over this un-balancing would be deafening, and that players would demand an explanation. "While we originally designed this title with strong competitive balance in mind," explains your favorite developer, "we've decided to purposely make these specific elements overly powerful as to manufacture a competitive experience amongst players." Sounds preposterous, right? After all, who would purposely sabotage their own title? Now for the Shyamalanian twist: That is precisely what is happening with the release of Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. (Spoilers, I know). %Gallery-121023%

  • Capcom talks stronger focus on PC platform

Capcom isn't really known for its PC titles -- sure, ports here and there populate the platform, but it's primarily a console company. In a missive over on Capcom-Unity, corporate officer and senior veep, Christian Svensson, details how he and a select few others within Capcom are working to change that. "As we continue to expand our businesses in Russia, China, Korea and Brazil, the PC becomes increasingly important as it is the primary platform in those territories," he says. Svensson points to the "historically" small PC market in Japan as a hurdle, which means the Japanese developers aren't very familiar and comfortable with the platform -- but online experiences are becoming quite prevalent; a viable means of revenue and justification for allotting resources for PC development. The success of Monster Hunter Frontier Online is certainly helping Capcom understand the importance of the platform. "PC gaming's profile is growing at Capcom," Svensson assures. Several games are slated to come to the PC this year, including Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Svensson says the Japanese COO and other execs "increasingly request a PC version" when discussing what to green light if no PC version is planned during the first stages of a product. "So in short, while we're still not yet where I'd like for us to be, the future is getting better for Capcom fans who are PC gamers all over the world."

Capcom is trying to tempt you into a purchase of Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition with the seductive power of evil ... Bobble Budds. As a pre-order bonus for purchases of the game from the Capcom Store, the company is offering "Bobble Budd" toys of Oni (above) and Evil Ryu. Like past Bobble Budds, these have awakened evil forces that allow them to pack their bodies into their own spherical heads. Free toys might not be enough to talk you out of just getting the Arcade Edition DLC on June 7; however, if you were already planning to buy the disc, now you can get free toys.

Although Capcom "has not made any announcements" regarding Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition for consoles, others seem to be doing the talking for the publisher. A leaked trailer suggested that Arcade Edition would be available as downloadable content -- now mega-retailer Amazon lists a $40 disc as well. It shows a June 28 release date for North America. A couple weeks back the British Board of Film Classification gave the title a June 24 release date for Europe. We expect Capcom to officially announce the title shortly. Update: Capcom has confirmed the Arcade Edition will be available June 7 as DLC on Xbox 360, PS3 and Windows PC for Super Street Fighter IV owners at $14.99 (1200 MSP). The retail version will be available on Xbox 360 and PS3 on June 24 and 28 in Europe and North America, respectively. The PC version will hit the streets in July. %Gallery-119751%

After giving us a look at Evil Ryu for Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, Capcom Japan has pulled back the curtain on the final hidden fighter: Oni. We've got screens and videos showing off his moves -- the perfect way to study up before the DLC eventually drops!

The site ConsoleTECH has posted a trailer (presumably leaked from Capcom's Captivate event) for something that we probably all knew was coming anyway: Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition DLC for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of SSFIV. According to the trailer, the new DLC adds the arcade-only Yun, Yang, Evil Ryu and Oni characters, along with the changes to character balance made for the Japanese arcade release -- which contradicts a previous statement made by producer Yoshinori Ono. Those who download this add-on can still play against non-DLC Super Street Fighter IV players. The update also enhances the "Replay Channel" with new features that allow you to send replay data to friends, "follow" certain people and watch their new replays, or watch only fights between people with 3000 PP or more. Update: The original video we embedded has been pulled by Capcom. We've embedded another one, but, well, watch it while you can.

  • Ono: Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition won't come to consoles

If you were looking forward to one day buying the "Arcade Edition" of Super Street Fighter IV on a PS3 or Xbox 360 disc (or even 3DS cartridge), you can go ahead and put that money toward something else. (Marvel vs. Capcom 3, maybe?) Producer Yoshinori Ono told Famitsu (via Andriasang) that Capcom has no plan to release the Arcade Edition for home consoles. The reason lies in the game balance. The Arcade Edition includes characters who are deliberately unbalanced -- we're thinking Oni and Evil Ryu here -- in order to build "competitive spirit" among the people who hang out at arcades and play in short sessions. The home version of Super Street Fighter IV has been designed to better equalize the characters. Of course, the absence of a standalone console release of the arcade version of the game doesn't preclude the release of Evil Ryu, Oni, Yun and Yang as Super Street Fighter IV DLC -- something Ono has proposed before. Update: Ono has made several statements on Twitter suggesting that an Arcade Edition DLC announcement will be forthcoming after the release of Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. Thanks, Kreg.

  • Learn how to make your comb in Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition

It would be juvenile of us to laugh at the typos on the Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition cabinet, so we're reporting about them for the purpose of ... ah, hell, we're laughing at them. "Guird by saving attack," the instructions on the cabinet read. "Chuse and attack." If someone tried to play this game as the first experience with Street Fighter, would he or she know how to "Shoot special comb"? For that matter, would anyone learn anything useful from "Change power by the time," or "Can cancel attack by saving make your comb!" In the old Street Fighters, at least, only the voices were totally incomprehensible.
