We've raised our expectations for portable fighting games in the last decade, especially in the past year. The last time Namco brought Tekken to a Nintendo handheld, it produced 2002's Tekken Advance, which received praise from reviewers at the time but in hindsight was a poor facsimile of the console and arcade experience -- like the Kid Cuisine version of spaghetti and meatballs, fortified with essential vitamins and minerals, but, c'mon son, that ain't a proper meal.Another Tekken Advance (that is to say another handheld port that's far from arcade perfect) wouldn't stand today, not when releases like Super Street Fighter IV 3D and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 set the standard for fighting games you can play on the go. Those releases don't stop at just emulating the big screen experience; they raise the bar for what all portable titles can accomplish, online and off. That is why Namco Bandai and Arika's Tekken 3D Prime Edition will disappoint both new and casual Tekken fans. Because while the core game -- the parts in between "Round One, Fight!" and "K.O. You win!" -- are just as great as the Tekken 6 I've played on consoles and in arcades, everything else is lacking.%Gallery-130929%

Tekken 3D Prime Edition is planned for release in Japan and North America in February. Today, Namco Bandai announced a final North American release date of February 14, along with plans to release the 3DS fighter in Europe and Australia (distributed by Nintendo) on February 17, making for a near-simultaneous worldwide release. If you pick it up at launch, you won't have to worry about anyone else online having more practice time than you! You can also, uh, open a chat room and host international watch parties of Tekken: Blood Vengeance, the 3D movie included on the cartridge. There aren't that many other practical advantages to a worldwide release, other than the basic "not being annoyed by a long wait."

Andriasang snagged the latest copy of Famitsu, which confirms a February 16 launch date for Tekken 3D Prime Edition in Japan. As you may recall, Tekken 3D Prime Edition isn't simply a video game -- it also includes the 3DS' first feature-length film, Tekken Blood Vengeance. Oh, and we should mention, if you're thinking about picking up the game simply to see someone riding a panda, we'd be remiss if we didn't turn you on to cheaper options.

We've seen almost nothing about the 3DS Tekken game, except for a flash of footage during Nintendo's E3 stage presentation. Namco Bandai has released a new trailer of the game now called Tekken 3D Prime Edition, allowing us to see just how much body glistening Namco has been able to generate with the 3DS hardware. It's more glistening than you'd probably expect! Namco also revealed that the 3D movie Tekken Blood Vengeance will be included on the cartridge, making it the first feature-length 3D movie announced for 3DS. Namco says only that the package will be released "soon," but it's likely to be the first 3D movie released on 3DS as well. Blood Vengeance is also part of a PS3 bundle including Tekken Tag Tournament HD and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Prologue.

Despite having a definitive list of 3DS games in development at last year's E3, we were surprised to see Tekken 3D, a new installment in the series, during a 3DS montage at the Nintendo E3 2011 press conference. We were only given the briefest glimpse at the game -- a match between Heihachi and Kazuya. Hopefully it's at Nintendo's booth so we can get a longer, more in-depth look.
