Click for high-resolution image. PSN downloadable Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is getting another update today, one which Japanese players have enjoyed for weeks now. The most significant additions in this recent patch include DualShock 3 support and Pickup Match mode, which allows players to bypass the waiting room and continue playing one-on-one matches continuously. Other tweaks include the ability to input and display names for rooms, a "flag" search (to find the best possible connections), new notifications and new casual matches. As expected, bugs have also been squashed. The patch should be available for all American gamers today. %Gallery-5298%

ThreeSpeech, ever the font of EU PSN knowledge, have revealed that Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection will be released on the European PlayStation Network store tomorrow. The current version of Dark Resurrection will be removed so that only the online version will be available at the price of £14.99. Those of you who nip in quick and buy the vanilla version (currently £6.99) before the update tomorrow can buy the online portion of the game for only £3.49. So act fast, there's money to be saved. If you don't fancy some online Tekken action, then don't forget that the US Store will be updated with a demo of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. If you've been in Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection training since earlier this year (aren't your thumbs sore?), you can finally put your skills to the test with the rest of the world now that an online pack for the game has been released on the North American PlayStation Network store. You can buy it separately for $10, or, if you've been holding out, you can buy it and the game in a bundle for $30. We've made it clear in the past that we think pretty highly of Xbox Live, but this week, between this Tekken 5 upgrade, Puzzle Fighter, three new demos and Warhawk, Sony's making it pretty clear that their online offering shouldn't be counted out, no matter what state Home might be in. [Thanks, Jamie]

The fantastic PSN title, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is going online in Japan next week and is expected to be released in the weeks following for North America as well. While the update will cost $9.99, it adds a pretty substantial amount of content. Most obvious is the ability to play online with friends and compete in online tournaments, but they've also added a dojo mode for practice as well as the ever popular Survival mode. To show off the new features, Namco released a ton of screenshots from the American release of the Tekken 5 online expansion. Check them out! %Gallery-5298%

Easily the best 3D fighting game on the platform, Tekken features PS2-quality graphics, enhancements over the PS2 original, and online data sharing. Not bad for $20, no? Check it out at Gamestop.

  • Metal Gear and Tekken goes online on PS3

Companies are finally jumping on the online PS3 bandwagon. Virtua Fighter 5 disappointed many PS3 fans when its online component was revealed ... exclusively for Xbox 360. Sony supporters cried in outrage as it appeared that developers were not taking advantage of the system's online capabilities. Thankfully, it looks like those dark days are over. Two huge PlayStation franchises now have confirmed online play: Metal Gear Solid and Tekken. Like Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, the upcoming PS3-exclusive Tekken 6 will feature versus matches over the internet. That's supposedly only the first of a long list of online features -- don't be surprised if Namco Bandai adds online leaderboards to the final game. Metal Gear Solid will also be going online on PS3, but how exactly is still unclear at the moment. Could the recently disconnected Metal Gear Online come back as a PlayStation downloadable title? Or, will an online mode be added to Metal Gear Solid 4? Hopefully, we'll find out more at next week's Metal Gear 20th Anniversary event.

The upcoming online update to TEKKEN 5: Dark Resurrection will cost $9.99. The update, which will be available later this year, will include Opti Match, Quick Match, Custom Match and Friend Match, "making it easy to find opponents to fight with anywhere, anytime." While waiting for their turn to battle, players will also be able to study their opponents by watching battles in the lobby. Online will also include two new single player modes, including Practice mode and Survival mode. A new Online News Ticker will post the weekly, monthly and overall rank leaders at any given point. According to the press release, "Players will fight their way to the deadly Dark Lord to prove that they are worthy of battling it out in the online TEKKEN ranking." Whatever that means. "It is beyond words how excited we are to finally be bringing our famous fighting franchise, TEKKEN, online for the first time," Makoto Iwai, Senior Vice President and COO of NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc. said. "Not only is TEKKEN 5: Dark Resurrection Online a great value, but it now features the largest evolution in the franchise to date."

Here's a tasty bit of news that should have fighting enthusiasts drooling at the mouth, mostly because we've yet to get a great online fighting experience on the PS3. Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is going to have an update soon that allows for online play! In addition to standard fighting online, there will also be online rankings to show off your mad skills. If you haven't played in a while or are unfamiliar with the combo system, the new Practice mode should help get your online ranking up a little faster -- because you'll train and get better. There's also the addition of Survival mode, adding in yet another option to an already worthwhile purchase from the PS Store. However, these additions aren't free. To get all this stuff tacked on, you may be charged anywhere from 1,000 - 2,800 yen. We're estimating for the Americas that our addition will come around $7.99 - $9.99, but those are just guesses. What do you guys think? Is it worth the extra output for a lot of extra input content?

  • Tekken: Dark Resurrection becomes a million seller

Tekken: Dark Resurrection has been an overwhelming success on PSP, selling over a million copies since its release according to Gamasutra. The title's selling power has been so significant that it's become the second best-selling title for Namco Bandai in the past fiscal year. The only other title to beat it was Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 for PlayStation 2. Hopefully, the rampant success of Namco's fighter on PSP will make it consider bringing one of its other high-profile fighting franchises to the platform. [Via PS3 Fanboy]

So, this title has been out for a little bit, but we've had our hands full with other stuff lately. Until last week, this game went relatively untouched. Things change, but one sad truth remains: I suck at Tekken 5. What's worse is that when I reverted back to Virtua Fighter 5 after playing this PSN title, I sucked at that too. It seems a friend was right -- you can only play one 3D fighter at a time. In any case, here are some review numbers given to Tekken 5 by some big sites... our review will follow after you click that "continue reading" link. IGN: 8.2 / 10 GamePro: 8.5 / 10 GameSpot: 8.3 / 10 1UP: 7.5 / 10

With the release of this hotly-anticipated title coming soon for the US PlayStation Store (end of February, we're pretty sure), there's no shortage of screenshots seeping through the cracks of the internet and into our minds. We present to you a half dozen, minus one, of the latest. These screens show that, while missing that dramatic next-gen sheen many have come to expect, the game still looks darn good for a downloadable title. With 1080p and an extra character to play as (Jinpachi Mishima), this is a great "in the meantime" title as we keep our eyes peeled for Tekken 6. Speaking of fighting games... isn't Virtua Fighter 5 out today? The GameStops around here usually don't get them until the day after it's released, but let us know if you ran out and successfully grabbed your copy!

  • Tekken in PS3 Store this month

Tekken Dark Resurrection plops down in North America's PlayStation Store later this month, following its debut in Asia. Namco Bandai's downloadable fighter joins Sega's disc-based Virtua Fighter 5 in the waning weeks of February, as two high-profile franchises battle for PS3 owners' idle attention. While unconfirmed, expect Tekken to be offered in the $15-20 range; VF5's gonna go for the standard $60. 1UP speculates that Namco Bandai could offer additional updates for Tekken -- like online multiplayer -- but the publisher has shot down rumors that the (initial) North American release was delayed to add new content. If you already nabbed the Asian version, no worries, you won't be missing out.

When Tekken 5 was released on the PS-Store in Japan, there were mild complaints about some scaling issues in certain levels and some texturing trouble with a few of the characters. Keeping that in mind, the announcement that the game will soon be hitting North American stores is even more exciting. Why? Well, all those kinks should be worked out. Speculation, sure, but why would such a delay have existed? You can check out some hands-on impressions if you're not sure if you want this title, but really, what else have you got until the end of March? The game sports a handful of playing modes, including the "fight money" system where your skill in the ring can buy you some bling! Wow, that was pretty lame. But it can -- in the form of teaser trailers, PS3 wallpapers, music, and more. Good stuff... look for its release later this month!

A Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection gameplay sequence is today's most-watched GameTrailers video. The footage of the arcade game -- turned PS3 download -- looks true to the Tekken empire, with most of its moves based loosely in reality, instead of the complete fantasy of some fighters. Do you like a real-world grounding in fighters, or would you rather the game embellish more? We think that the graphics and backgrounds look strong, but judge for yourself. Watch the video after the break.

If you've got access to the Japanese or Hong Kong PlayStation Store, you may have noticed a nice little surprise: Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection has appeared for download. The game boasts a few nice features -- full 1080p visuals, the boss Jinpachi as a playable character, extra play modes and more. The download is around 830 MB and requires about 1.5 MB of save space. The cost? Sorry guys, this one isn't free, but comparing it to the cost of a new game, putting you back only $17 is a gift. This will eventually slide into the US store, but if you know the tricks of the trade, you can get it now. Enjoy.

Less than a month after a downloadable version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection was announced for PlayStation 3, Namco Bandai's fighter has belly-flopped onto PlayStation Store in Japan (¥2000; $16.85) and Hong Kong ($125HK; $16.07). And it's a beast, weighing in at 830MB; well exceeding the arbitrary limit proposed last month. But Sony's done it, introducing the first full-featured digital distribution title to consoles. Sure, certain Xbox Live games could be just as valuable (if not more so) to the on-demand movement, but let's not downplay Sony's achievement. This is exactly the sort of move that will pressure Microsoft to give up on its enforced 50MB Live Arcade size limit. The hefty HD version of Tekken 5 includes arcade battle, ghost battle, and offline versus modes, in addition to an artwork and video gallery. Final boss Jinpachi Mishima has also been made playable. No word on the inevitable North American release.

According to GAF, Famistu is reporting that Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection will be offered as a downloadable PlayStation 3 title. The PS3 version will be an arcade port (Dark Resurrection was also released on PSP) with new content, including a playable Jinpachi. The game will also be enhanced for high definition displays. Release date and cost have not yet been disclosed, though Dark Resurrection will almost certainly exceed Xbox Live Arcade's current peak price ($15). Still, Tekken 5 has a bit more to offer than the likes of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat 3, no? Should Microsoft be concerned?

The once-exclusive PSP version of Tekken 5, entitled Dark Resurrection may be heading to the PLAYSTATION 3. According to Jeux-France, the latest issue of Famitsu details a potential HD version of Tekken: Dark Resurrection to be released through the online PlayStation Store. It appears that, like Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories before it, Bandai Namco is attempting to maximize the audience for this enhanced fighting game. No other details, like a release date, or a price, have been revealed. Will you feel burned again if this PSP exclusive heads over to another console... for less money? Your PSP is in need of a resurrection, ain't it? Was that too harsh? 'Kay, maybe just a lil' resuscitation. Uh-huh, admit it, unless you're a raving fanboy, the past four months, in terms of licensed game content, have not been kind to your Sony portable. Naysayers may write off Tekken: Dark Resurrection as another example of a popular PS2 franchise making the jump to PSP -- or worse, declare it 'just a Tekken 5 port.' Forget that. TDR is an enormous accomplishment in the portable fighting genre and more importantly, it's got your PSP's heart beating again. GameSpy (90/100) points out the game's most apparent flaw .... "it's that there are online features, but they don't include versus play over the internet." Games Radar (90/100) concludes that it's "oceanic depth" that makes this "the single best portable fighting game ever." 1UP (80/100) finds that despite a cheap end boss and d-pad issues, "Tekken: Dark Resurrection is one of the easiest games to recommend for the PSP."

  • IGN gives Tekken: Dark Resurrection a 9.2

While I don't think I'll be plunking down the $372 for the Tekken Gigapack, after reading IGN's review of Tekken: Dark Resurrection, I may have to pick it up. IGN gives Dark Resurrection a 9.2 as they annoint it as the best fighting game and arcade port ever on the PSP. They also go on to say it's one of the best games available across any genre. Dark Resurrection, which is basically an updated Tekken 5, sports tons of extra content in the form of "new customizable items, characters, environments, and other cool goodies. There are new ranks, new moves, new music, small interface enhancements, every character is available from the start ... you name it, it's probably in here." One problem I've always had with fighting games on portables are the controls. I can never seem to pull off moves very easily, and it seems the case is the same with Dark Resurrection. "The PlayStation Portable's directional pad makes it difficult to pull off moves that arcade and PS2 veterans might otherwise have no problem with." They go on to say most players will get used to the d-pad issue, but still, that kinda sucks. The good thing is aside from that and a couple other small complaints, there doesn't seem to be too many other faults in the game. So there you have it, one of the first reviews of Namco's latest fighting venture is out and it seems like it's a winner. [Via IGN]
