Guardians will have to stay on standby for "several hours" later today while Bungie applies a hotfix update to Destiny. The downtime, during which you'll be unable to play the game, is scheduled to begin at 10AM ET (7AM PT, 3PM UK). You can check out the full list of the fixes here, which include nixing the bug that lets you quick scope using certain weapons and tightening up connectivity. If you're unfamiliar with the term, quick scoping is bringing up a sniper rifle's scope reticle for an instant before firing, exploiting an accuracy window. Meanwhile, Bungie is also raising the Iron Banner today, a new week-long event designed to remove the equal footing from underneath the space boots of competitive types. Unlike other playlists, the Iron Banner PVP matches will take level and gear advantages and attack and defense ratings into account, so if your stats could do with a boost then enter at your own risk. If you are feeling up to the challenge, there are legendary gear rewards on offer as you raise your Iron Banner rank. The event is due to end this time next week on October 14. Hear ye, hear ye: The Lords of Iron will challenge Destiny players to prove their mettle (and, coincidentally, their metal) in the game's PvP mode during the Iron Banner event, beginning on October 7. If you participated in the Destiny beta, you may already be familiar with the rules. For freshly-resurrected Guardians however, here's the jist: in normal Crucible (see: PvP) matches, there are limits placed on a player's gear to prevent victory and defeat from being determined by the loot you or your foes have amassed. In the Iron Banner playlist of PvP matches, no such limitation exists. This means the dedicated loot farmers and equipment hoarders of the galaxy are likely to have an advantage over those less-equipped. Your rewards, should you excel in this particular event, will be high-level weapons and armor, emblems and special color schemes for your Guardian's armor. If you don't already have equipment with awe-inspiring numbers attached to it, might we suggest you take a tour of Destiny's fabulous, loot-filled caves? [Image: Activision]

Heads up, Destiny level-cappers -- you've got a new challenge waiting for you. Bungie is reintroducing Iron Banner challenges in a series of special Crucible events throughout this weekend, giving Beta veterans an incentive to take on new competition. To unlock the Iron Banner challenges, players must first visit Lord Saladin in Destiny's Tower hub area. Afterward, the Iron Banner can be accessed in a separate playlist within the Crucible. Make sure to hunt down some quality gear in the game's campaign mode first; Iron Banner matches do not place limits on player equipment, making your weapon and armor power levels key components to victory. Matches take place across 'Rusted Lands' on Earth, 'First Light' on the Moon, 'Shores of Time' on Venus, and 'Blind Watch' on Mars, with special awards and gear available for players who advance in rank. Iron Banner events will be held today from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m PDT, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Challenges will also be available tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. [Image: Bungie]

Guardians that have already trampled Destiny's alien species can still find something new to do later today – Bungie's weekly update has introduced The Iron Banner, an event that opens today at 5pm EST and serves as the "only way" to return to Rusted Lands, which was in Destiny's alpha. The Iron Banner will also lead players to Blind Watch, a locale on Mars. Because this adventure is in space. Destiny's update reminds us that its mobile app is available too, lest you be stuck tending to real-life responsibilities without an outlet for your genuine interests. The app lets players peek at their Guardians, swap gear or dive into meticulously-detailed stats for their time in the beta. In a response to a fan's question, Bungie also reminded us that saves will transfer between last generation consoles and their modern counterparts. In other words, you can start your journey before you finish saving for a new console without worrying about wasting your time. [Image: Bungie]
