Some of the most popular and celebrated iOS games are currently as free as a bird - a tiny-winged bird, that is. Yes, Andreas Illiger's adorable Tiny Wings is one of several big-name apps going free at the moment, and while nothing's been announced as yet, our spider sense tell us this has something to do with the App Store's fifth anniversary, which Apple is celebrating on Wednesday, July 10. Freebies spotted so far include Epic's Infinity Blade 2, the delicious Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery: EP, Disney's charming Where's My Water, and the beautiful Badland. We'll keep an eye out for others, but for now we're going to stare at you with one eyebrow raised and wonder why you're still reading this instead of loading up the App Store.

  • Tiny Wings update brings iPad version, new modes

Tiny Wings 2.0 is now available on the New Zealand App Store, and is currently making its way around the world, to be available here in PDT around midnight or so. We heard about the game last week, but it turns out it's not a full game -- it's just an update to the incredibly popular iOS app, along with a separate new HD version for iPad. The iPad version (available for $2.99) is called Tiny Wings HD and includes iCloud support, which a lot of Tiny Wings players will surely appreciate. There's also a new mode called Flight School in both apps, which features four different Tiny Wings birds flying across the landscape, trying to reach a goal first. And there's also a two-player same screen multiplayer mode, where two players touch on either side of the same screen. Creator Andreas Illiger agrees he probably could have released the update as a second app, but he says he instead wanted to give it away for free, "as a big thank you to all my fans for changing my life." That's a nice sentiment (though if you want to play the game at native resolution on iPad, you'll need to buy it again anyway). The Tiny Wings update for iPhone, version 2.0, should be available on the App Store near you soon.

The new Tiny Wings project, for which we saw a singularly charming trailer, is actually a free update to the Tiny Wings you already have, and not a sequel you'll have to pay for. TouchArcade caught the news when the update went live on New Zealand's iOS App Store, revealing a new mode called "Flight School" that has you racing across 15 new levels against three AI birds. In addition to this update, creator Andreas Illiger has released an iPad-specific version, with support for split-screen two-player racing. You can see the iPad version of Tiny Wings 2.0 in the TouchArcade playthrough video above. The App Store update will go live in the US late tonight.

Tiny Wings 2, a sequel to 2011's indie darling from Andreas Illiger, launches on iOS this upcoming Thursday, July 12.Haven't watched it yet? Fix that – as far as announcement trailers go, this one is the best.

We haven't heard much (anything, really) from Tiny Wings creator Andreas Illiger since he released his amazing little iOS game Tiny Wings, featuring a cute bird flying through a series of random hills. Illiger was a little intimidated (not surprisingly) after his game got so big so fast, and he disappeared from the public eye, even as his title sold millions and millions of copies on the App Store. But he didn't stop working, apparently. He intends to release another game very soon. In this (very rare) interview, he says that he was shocked by all the attention Tiny Wings received. Despite making plenty of money, the only extravagance he's gone for was a new computer. He's still working alone, not with a big studio, and while he says the new game will be for iOS, everything else about the game is "a big secret." It should be out in just a few weeks. It's good to see Illiger is managing to keep his head through all of this. It'll be very interesting to see what he's working on next. [via Joystiq]

Andreas Illiger, creator of iOS sensation, Tiny Wings, is on the verge of releasing his next game. The project should be finished "in less than three weeks," Illiger has told Flow Studio. Unfortunately, that's about all we know. Illiger noted that the game will be for iOS but, "otherwise it's a big secret, I am not telling anything to anyone."Regarding the development of Tiny Wings, Illiger noted that he wanted to create a positive game about the dream of flying. "There are many destructive and negative games," said Illiger, "so I wanted to figure out if it is possible to make a game which makes you feel happy." Dude, mission accomplished.[Thanks, Sarah!]

You'll forgive us, but we're banking on the concept of Aunt Eileen stuffing your stocking with iTunes gift cards rather than, say, a Zune Marketplace one. Perhaps that depends on if you've been naughty or nice? We're not quite sure how this holiday stuff works, but we're trying our best here. Anyway, below the break we've compiled another year's worth of great games on both iPhone and iPad platforms that we hope you'll love as well. Even if you don't get those gift cards, these games should still be affordable -- even after buying all those presents. Good luck with the relatives!

  • Tiny Wings update brings Game Center support, tweaks difficulty

We've all had a lot of fun playing Andreas Illiger's adorable iOS title Tiny Wings, but now we've all got some skin in the game. An update released today not only robs the sixth island of some of its super uneven difficulty, it also adds Game Center support. On top of the game's native Open Feint features, that makes Tiny Wings one of the biggest contenders for our competitive attention. And now we're playing it. So you don't get an ending to this post. Deal with that reality.

  • Tiny Wings theme song now available as free download

As we reviewed in late February, Tiny Wings is an addictive game from the moment you first launch it. For a tiny app, it's powerful enough to knock the mighty Angry Birds off its perch atop the paid app list in the App Store. As of early this morning, Tiny Wings still enjoyed the top spot. And like many addictive games, you've probably found yourself humming the catchy theme over and over as well. Creator Andreas Illiger is generous enough to provide the Tiny Wings theme as a free MP3 download through his site. Even though it's free, Illiger asks downloaders to respect his copyright and not use the music in commercial works. To get a preview of the game, and its catchy music, check out the trailer after the cut. [via AppAdvice]

  • TUAW's Daily App: Tiny Wings

Some games and apps picked for our Daily App become hits after they get selected, but others sort of pop out of the App Store as fully-formed hits already, and we just follow along. Tiny Wings is one of the latter. It's already a huge hit, having beat out Angry Birds for the top paid spot on the App Store. If you haven't played it yet, it's definitely worth a try. In Tiny Wings, you're a little bird with (surprise) tiny wings. By touching the screen, you can speed the cute little guy up and down hills that he can ramp off of, trying to travel as far as possible while collecting speed boosts. Like some of the best games on the App Store, it's hard to explain, but it's very easy to play. Just a moment with Tiny Wings is all it takes to figure it out. The gorgeous art and music make the experience casually excellent; it's very simple to jump into, but kind of tough to master. I can't recommend Tiny Wings enough. If you haven't picked it up on the App Store for US$0.99 yet, odds are you will soon anyway. This is developer Andreas Illiger's first app, but it looks like he struck gold on his first try.
