  • Report: Ubisoft in talks with Warner Bros., Paramount on Splinter Cell movie deal

Tom Clancy's no stranger to films, so it's not the most surprising news to hear that his Splinter Cell line of video games may be getting the cinematic treatment. Deadline reports that Ubisoft is in talks with both Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures over the potential for a film tie-in (though talks with the former are said to have fizzled already). It's unclear which game, if any, the film would follow. It's also important to note that deals like this don't always pan out (we're looking at you, Uncharted and BioShock films). And even if the film rights were optioned by a film studio, there's then no guarantee that a script would be written or a film made. What we're trying to say is: take all of this with a Bonneville Salt Flats-sized grain of ... well, you know.[Pictured: Splinter Cell: Blacklist]

  • Ubisoft patches inverted aim (back) into Splinter Cell HD Trilogy on PSN, retail patch coming soon

Ubisoft has finally managed to patch an inverted aim option into Splinter Cell HD Trilogy, reports Eurogamer. Ubisoft informed Joystiq that the patch is currently only available for the PSN version of the game in North America and the EMEA region. A patch to the retail version is "coming soon." The previous omission of the option was bizarre to say the least, especially in light of the fact that the original releases in the collection all allowed for inverted aim. And of course, there's the nagging concern that inverted aim is available in almost every shooting game ever. On the bright side, at least it only took two months.

  • Splinter Cell HD Trilogy missing another feature: inverted aim

Look, we're not prejudiced, we just think people who play shooters with inverted aim turned on have backwards brains. Backwards -- broken -- brains. But regardless of our feelings on the control setting, Ubisoft took things a step further with this week's release of the Splinter Cell HD Trilogy on PS3, entirely removing the option. That's not to say it's the most egregious omission, as both Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory are sadly missing their multiplayer modes, but it's a pretty major one no less. We've contacted Ubisoft to see if there's any chance that the option will get patched in at some point, but have yet to hear back. [Thanks, Merrick]

  • Splinter Cell HD Trilogy hits Euro PSN tomorrow [update]

The PS3 Splinter Cell Trilogy release has been, perhaps, too stealthy for its own good, placing decoy release dates and then slipping by them unnoticed. The European PSN may have finally caught Sam Fisher -- the PlayStation Blog announced that the collection (which bundles HD versions of Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow, and Chaos Theory) will be released tomorrow for €29.99/£23.99 with single games for €9.99/£7.99. European PSN releases frequently occur the same week as North American PSN releases, so it's entirely possible the Trilogy will be out today in America on PSN. We're checking with Ubisoft. As for the retail version, the latest we've seen is September in America. The European PS Blog says the Blu-Ray release will happen "at a later date." Update: An Ubisoft rep tells us we won't see Splinter Cell on PSN in the US today.

The launch date for PS3's Splinter Cell Trilogy appears to have shifted once again, this time to September. Ubisoft told us in May that it didn't have a ship date for the title, but several major retailers listed an August launch at the time. The bundle had previously missed its appointed March and June launch dates. The latest release date of September 27 is now listed by the retail trinity of Amazon, GameStop and GameFly (which conveys only publisher-provided intel). We've contacted Ubisoft for an official sitrep on the Sam Fisher HD bundle. [Thanks, Josh]

The remastered Splinter Cell Trilogy for PlayStation 3 looks to have been pushed back to August, according to several retailers. Amazon, GameStop and GameFly (which conveys release date information only when received from publishers) each list the title with an August 2 release date. After missing its initial March ship date, Splinter Cell was due to arrive in stores and on PSN in late June. When we asked Ubisoft to confirm a ship date, we were told, "We currently do not have a ship date for it. It will be sometime this summer." [Thanks, Josh]

Now that the Xbox 360-exclusive demo for Splinter Cell: Conviction is available, we thought it appropriate to walk readers through the experience in a lengthy video packed with essential Sam Fisher intel. If you're wondering how Conviction ties to other games in the series or have an interest in hearing the changes made to portions of the demo from our previous hands-on experiences, this is the video to watch. Also, if you're stuck at work and can't play the demo for yourself, watching this video walkthrough might help fill that void and pass the time until you can go on your own gunslingin' adventures with America's most wanted secret agent. • Second Life rated one of 3 worst HUDs by GamePro

GamePro just listed their '10 Best HUDs in Gaming' feature, with a final section entitled 'The 3 Worst HUDs', and Second Life is 3rd on that list, just behind Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, and X-Men: Legends. While they say "Looking at the gameplay involves a lot of guess work to figure out what's going on in the world", they could have, and should have been a lot more critical.Residents of SL know just how difficult it is to get around the interface as a newbie, and while I understand that's one of the major pieces Linden Lab is working on (I know someone who was recently hired to work on UI changes specifically), it's still an intimidating thing to look at, much less try to sort through when you're looking for just one simple command. I mean, look at that screenshot. Technically, those are just menus that have been torn out of the bar, and not the entire interface, but it still applies -- they're ugly, they're complicated, the choices are somewhat obtuse. So now that it's been officially noticed, what will LL have in store for us? How would you fix this?[Thanks, Mitch!]
