Tecmo has been pretty quiet about Undead Knights since we last saw it at E3. That's about to change, as Tecmo has announced an unexpectedly soon release date for the PSP exclusive: September 29th. Finally, the team is ready to take the wraps off the zombie-infested gameplay -- and it looks markedly improved over our less-than-stellar E3 encounter. We'll be getting our non-rotting hands on a preview build soon, so stay tuned for our updated impressions.%Gallery-65172%

A game filled with zombies made by Tecmo -- sounds like a recipe for success, right? Unfortunately, the demo we saw at E3 didn't inspire much confidence in the upcoming PSP exclusive. Conceptually, Undead Knights seems ripe for fun: imagine creating a zombie horde to tear apart your enemies and do your bidding. Instead, what we saw at E3 was an unpolished, uninspired brawler that doesn't take advantage of its unique premise or the PSP hardware. After an impressive CG intro, we see a world that's ... brown. Most games nowadays have broken away from a monochromatic color scheme, but looks like Undead Knights didn't get the memo. The drab look just doesn't look very good on the PSP screen. A hulking figure takes the screen, and starts pummeling enemies with a sword. How does this invovle zombies? Well, you can go up for a finishing move, transforming your victim into a mindless zombie.%Gallery-65172%

  • Tecmo assaulting E3 with ninjas, zombies ... basketball?

Dear Koei, Things are great, and so far infection-free here at E3. Sure, we miss your quirky style, who wouldn't? Still, we're keeping ourselves busy readying games for the show, including Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, which ships for the PlayStation 3 this fall. Other games we've got at our booth this year include Family Fun Football on the Wii, action game Undead Knights for the PSP, and -- oh -- did you know we were making a basketball game? It's true! We've got several downloadable titles this year, including a "contemporary retro" arcade-style basketball game called NBA Unrivaled and an action puzzler named Puzzlegeddon, both we hope to hit XBLA and PSN later this year. Team Ninja's PS3-exclusive "art nouveau" shooter, Quantum, and the musical 2D platformer Fret Nice will also be on hand, though neither are expected to ship until sometime next year. All in all, we've got a lot of games to show off -- plus without any Dynasty Warriors games blocking our view we've got a clear shot those Ninja Gaiden models. Oo la la! Wishing you were here, Tecmo

  • Undead Knights: making your own Thriller-inspired zombies

What's one of the main inspirations for the upcoming PSP-exclusive Undead Knights? "The Thriller music video by Michael Jackson," says Tecmo's Kohei Shibata.A recent interview with Kikizo reveals some details on this mysterious zombie-infested game, first revealed at TGS last year. Although it's meant to be largely an action game, there is an element of strategy. Every enemy you encounter in the game can be transformed into a zombie, and these zombies all have unique characteristics. "An example of the variety of zombies is a soldier whose main weapon is using bombs, and when that turns into a zombie it can still throw bombs at the soldiers who are alive."Your zombie minions will be used in new and interesting ways throughout the game. For example, you may need to use your zombies to build a ladder to overcome an obstacle. You may need a certain number of zombies to shake a gate. Your zombies will be more than just brain-hungry monsters.[Thanks, David B.!]

  • Undead Knights developer loves the PSP, made for real gamers

Undead Knights was announced as a PSP exclusive at Tokyo Game Show last year. We haven't seen anything on Undead Knights since, but Gamasutra managed to get an interview out of the mysterious Team Tachyon crew at Tecmo. The interview reveals that Kohei Shibata is in love with the PSP. He wanted to target hardcore gamers with this dark action game, and PSP was an ideal fit: "With the PSP versus the DS, it just seems like the DS lends more toward the casual gamers, and I'm not sure if the real gamers are there [wanting] an action gameplay experience."The team is focusing on making a unique action experience, one that isn't simply about killing everything in your sight. "The most important thing, I think, is to be able to deliver a gameplay experience that's not just your typical action hack-and-slash, 'kill your enemies and move forward' game; there needs to be some sort of twist to an action game." The grim anti-hero approach of Undead Knights might have that "twist" they're looking for. Hopefully, it won't be long until we can see the fruits of their labor.

It may seem like Sony's PSP is dying, but Tecmo suggests that is actually undying. They recently unveiled Undead Knights -- and now, there's a trailer. The game will mix action, strategy and ... zombies. Starring as an anti-hero, you'll have to add a legion of zombies under your control. With the stinking stench of the undead at your disposal, you'll be able to conquer your enemies.Four player ad-hoc multiplayer (including co-op) is planned. But, don't expect this too soon -- this one is definitely a late 2009 release. Gallery: Undead Knights (PSP)

We've always known that zombies are tools. Well, mostly in the sense that they want to bite us on our vulnerable, fleshy bits, but one should certainly consider the possibilities afforded by having a snarling, undead force at one's disposal. That's what Tecmo has in mind for Undead Knights, a newly announced action game -- with just a sprinkle of strategy -- for the PSP.Stuck in the midst of a royal power struggle, you're encouraged to see every enemy as a potential ally. Casting you in the role of the anti-hero, Undead Knights sees the dead join your ranks, an increasing and varied assortment of undoubtedly foul-smelling monsters which will act out your every destructive whim. If we had to draw a comparison, we'd say it sounded a bit like Overlord -- or perhaps a more sinister Tokobot. Either way, Tecmo intends to keep things relatively smooth and simple, with action forming 80% of gameplay, and strategy relegated to those times when the unique services of certain felled enemies are required to progress. If you feel conquering is best done in the company of friends, you'll be pleased to note that Undead Knights will support 4-player ad hoc multiplayer and co-op. It will rise to retail in 2009. %Gallery-34102%

Good morning fellow PSP gamers, there's a new game to read about this morning. It comes from Tecmo -- who haven't released a game on PSP since Tokobot in 2005. The company's new title is called Undead Knights, as revealed in this week's issue of Famitsu. Scheduled for release next year, this survival horror title will focus on fighting "hordes of zombies" and -- like most developers working on new PSP titles -- it will include 4-player ad hoc.
