Judge OKs Dish lawsuit over Univision's soccer livestreams

Dish and Univision haven't been on the friendliest of terms for quite a while now, and we doubt this development will help bridge the widening gap between the two companies. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Univision has failed to convince a judge to toss the lawsuit Dish filed over content it streamed on Facebook. The direct-broadcast satellite provider accused Univision of violating their licensing deal by streaming Liga MX matches -- Mexico's top level soccer league -- on the world's biggest social network while it's broadcasting the games on TV at the same time.

It just became a bit harder to watch Spanish-language TV in the US, whether or not it's online. Dish and Sling TV have lost a trio of Univision stations (including its main channel, UniMás and Galavisión) after the two failed to end a carriage pricing dispute before a contract ended. As always in these TV squabbles, the two have been hurling vicious accusations at each other in an attempt to win public sympathy.

Univision's streaming ambitions are growing beyond live video. The Hispanic-American broadcaster has unveiled an on-demand service that gives you access to both its own shows as well as partners like the BBC and Viacom. Full access to live and on-demand content will cost you $8 per month, but current pay TV customers can spring for the on-demand portion for a $3 monthly fee.

Twitter hasn't scored a major sports livestreaming deal in a long while, but that drought is over. Variety has learned that the social network has struck a 3-year deal with Major League Soccer that will give it a selection of weekly video, including "at least" 24 live matches. The arrangement will turn Univision's normally Spanish-language broadcasts into English-language streams for Twitter users in the US. The first livestream has already taken place, in fact -- Twitter broadcast a match between Los Angeles FC and Real Salt Lake on March 10th.

Netflix's team-up with broadcaster Univision on El Chapo was a hit (it became hugely popular both in Mexico and on Univision), and the two are determined to capitalize on this success. They've renewed their partnership with the promise of creating "at least" five more shows together. The productions will be available in both English and Spanish, with Univision getting the chance to air them on TV in the US before they stream worldwide on Netflix. The first show out of the gate will be Tijuana, a Spanish-language show about a "web of corruption" that unfolds when reporters investigate the assassination of a presidential candidate.

The news out of Puerto Rico post-Hurricane Maria is, quite frankly, horrifying. The entire island could be without power for months. A crucial dam, the Guajataca, may be about to burst. Communication with the island is limited at best. There are many people still trying to get in touch with family, to make sure that loved ones living on the devastated island are okay. Now, Univision News is trying to make that a bit easier. They've built a tool (available in Spanish only) where you can choose the region of the country you're concerned about, and Univision will tell you the most recent and up-to-date news about the situation in that area.

Liga MX isn't the only pro soccer league you'll be able to watch on Facebook this season. The social network has signed another deal with Univision to stream at least 22 live Major League Soccer (MLS) matches in 2017. In addition to action on the pitch the league will produce over 40 "Matchday Live" analysis shows that will be exclusively available on Facebook.

Facebook has hosted livestreams of soccer matches in the past, but for the upcoming Liga MX season, the social network is doing more than one-off events. Today, Univision announced that 46 total matches will be streamed on its page via Facebook Live for the 2017 season. And yes, that includes playoffs. The network says the Mexican soccer league is the most-watched in the US, so easy access to English streams of select matchups makes a lot of sense.

It's been about a month since Gawker.com shut down, and now the last traces of the site's heritage have been effectively erased. Parent company Univision, which purchased Gawker Media's assets after it filed for bankruptcy (thanks to Hulk Hogan and retaliatory lawsuit aficionado Peter Thiel) just named Raju Narisetti as new CEO of Gizmodo Media Group. There's not a word to been seen here of Gawker's heritage, and with the flagship site on ice, there's nothing left for the Gawker brand.

Did you watch Netflix's Narcos and think it would be a perfect fit for TV? So did Univision. The Spanish-language broadcaster is forging a partnership with Netflix that will bring the first season of the Pablo Escobar crime saga to TV through the Univision Network. You'll also see the first run of Netflix's futbol drama Club de Cuervos air on UniMas. The second seasons of both productions will still be Netflix exclusives (this is more of a promotion than an olive branch), but it's good news if you've wanted to show your friends what all the fuss was about.

Sling TV's service is great for cord-cutters, but not ideal for families who like to watch different stuff at the same time. It recently launched a multi-stream option (in beta) that allows viewing on up to three Sling-TV supported devices at once, but so far content has been limited to Fox and a few other channels. However, Spanish viewers now have a bunch of new options thanks to the company's Best of Spanish TV-Beta that brings multi-stream viewing of channels like Azteca, beIN SPORTS, beIN SPORTS en Español, Cinelatino, CineSony, De Pelicula, Pasiones, Teleromántica, UniMás and Univision.

Apple continues to make its case in the court of public opinion about its ongoing dispute with the FBI. In a Spanish interview with Univision, Senior VP Eddy Cue says that if the agency forces Apple to create software to unlock San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook's iPhone, it would only benefit the bad guys. "If we make a key that opens all phones ... terrorists, criminals and pirates would find it," he says. Furthermore, Cue thinks that if its petition is successful, the FBI might make more sinister requests of Apple. "For example, one day they may want us to open your phone's camera and microphone."

AT&T loses Univision channels from U-verse in pricing dispute

There have certainly been some fierce disputes between TV providers and their networks in recent years, but few are quite so ugly as the one erupting between AT&T and Univision. AT&T has lost Univision's channels from its U-verse TV service after the Hispanic-oriented network pushed for higher carriage fees that it says would match those of its English-language peers, failing to resolve a contract dispute in the process. AT&T uses polarizing language to describe the spat, claiming that Univision is trying to "extort an outrageous price increase." However, Univision is even harsher: it's accusing AT&T of "redlining," or purposefully denying service and fair treatment along ethnic lines.

4K is everywhere. The technology is rapidly making its way into people's homes, in the form of a wide assortment of 4K-ready devices that include cameras, TVs and smartphones. Then there are the Netflixes and Amazons of the world, which are on a mission to make Ultra HD the norm, starting with original shows such as House of Cards and Mozart in the Jungle. But for some reason, the same can't be said about sports. Here's where Univision Deportes and NeuLion, a company that provides broadcasting services to television networks, are ready to step in.

The "Un-carrier" also released new data on its users' usage of the Binge-On service. According to T-Mobile, its "customers on qualifying data plans are already watching more than twice the video than before from the free services with Binge On." In all, users have streamed 34 petabytes for free.
