  • The DS Life: Insane Youth

The DS Life is a weekly feature in which we scour the known world for narrative images of Nintendo's handheld and handheld gamers. If you have a photo and a story to match it with, send both to thedslife at dsfanboy dot com.We really don't give chiptune artists or the micromusic scene the amount of attention they deserve here at DS Fanboy; to remedy that distressing fault, this week's installment of The DS Life turns your ears towards the clicks, pops, and wheezes of chiptune musician Maru's circuit-bent toys and Game Boy systems, low-tech instruments working in concert to sing a high-tech song.

  • USK lists Warhammer: Mark of Chaos for 360

Ah, the Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle, better known as the USK or, simply, the German version of the ESRB. We love 'em. Why? Because they constantly tip us off about games that publishers work so darned hard to keep secret. For example, the USK has now listed Namco Bandai and Black Hole Entertainment"s Warhammer: Mark of Chaos for the Xbox 360. A real time strategy title that debuted last holiday to decent reviews, Mark of Chaos would be yet another addition to the Xbox 360's burgeoning RTS library. The 360 game has another subtitle tacked onto it, making the full title actually Warhammer: Mark of Chaos -- Battle March. Whether this means we'll see a completely retooled game or an expansion to the original we're not sure. In an interesting twist, the entry on in the USK database is labeled "GC-Demo" which would lead us to believe we'll see a Mark of Chaos demo before too long. Once again, thanks USK![Via IGN. • USK: Switchball rolling to Arcade

The Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle is losing self control (Uh oh; ding!) over revealing games existence prior to their official announcements, and the latest is Switchball, which Xbox-Archiv.de has found the rating for on the USK's site. The video above is the trailer for the PC version, and it seems reminiscent of Marble Blast Ultra, which isn't a bad thing, especially if it brings a new flavor to the table. According to an Xboxic reader (link below), and the PC version's demo has 12 Achievements listed in the menu, so that makes this all the more likely to be true.[Via Xboxic]

  • The Darkness delayed for the Germans

We love getting to use this word ... the Unterhaltungssoftware Selbskontrolle (USK) has decided that a few changes need to be made to The Darkness before it releases in Germany. Key elements that need to be changed are Nazi symbols and a finishing move showing a human heart being ripped out. Before the Americans in the room get all First Amendment happy, the Germans have never allowed Nazi symbols in games (all the way back to Wolfenstein 3D) -- they're a little sensitive about that stuff. These requests for changes are also a very tempered move by the USK instead of just outright passive aggressively "banning" the game by not rating it, like they did with Dead Rising and Gears of War.The Xbox 360 and PS3 version of the game will now release on July 27 to satisfy the USK's demands. The PS3 version was delayed a week ago for unspecified reasons across Europe until July 20 - so Germany will need to wait an extra week. This did not affect the UK launch or content of The Darkness which occured today.

  • Manhunt 2 not likely for Australia, Germany

After Britain, the United States and Ireland, where do Australia and Germany stand on the issue of Manhunt 2? Australian officials are saying a release in their country is doubtful, meanwhile an official for the German USK ratings board has told Joystiq that game has not been submitted.Insiders in the Australian government reportedly told Smarthouse (via GamePolitics) that the game is likely not to be released down under. "We don't want to preempt the decision of the Office of Film and Literature Classification Review Board but it is looking very doubtful," they said. The Office of Film and Literature Classification was closed when Joystiq tried to reach them for comment, but Jason Hill of The Age reports that as of yesterday, the game had not been submitted for a rating. In an email correspondence with Joystiq, the USK's Christine Schulz told us as of this morning there was no application submitted for the game. Should Take Two and Rockstar forego submitting Manhunt 2 for any country, it would not be surprising. Both German and Australian ratings boards are notorious for banning games, by refusal of rating, with too much violent content. For the German USK, past titles to not get rated have included Dead Rising, Crackdown and Gears of War -- and the banning protocol is rather confusing. Australia's OFLC has Restricted 18+ ratings, but they are not applied to video games, so the highest rating for a game is Mature 15+ age. Hence, if a game were to be deemed too inappropriate for MA15, then it would be refused classification and the game must either be edited and resubmitted or just not sold. Games who were refused classification include Reservoir Dogs and Marck Ecko's Getting Up.

  • USK removes Marathon 2 rating for 360

Either we spoke too soon, or Microsoft's ninjas are pretty damned quick. X3F readers will recall that the USK (essentially Germany's version of the ESRB) rated Marathon: Durandal for the Xbox 360 last week. This led us to assume that our wild speculation from last November was true, and that Marathon was making its way to Xbox Live Arcade. Now, it looks like something is amiss. We checked the USK listing during our weekly Fancast recording session on Sunday, and lo and behold, the listing was gone (gasp!). No, really, check for yourself. So, here's the question: was the USK hallucinating, or has Microsoft demanded that the USK lower the veil of secrecy on what should have been a top-secret project?

  • Leaky ratings board confirms Tetris Splash

Another game has lost its big announcement thunder as the USK (the German video game ratings board) posted confirmation that an XBLA game called Tetris Splash exists. What is Tetris Splash and why is it so splashy? We aren't sure, but we know that the game is coming to the XBLA and should be a relatively simple form of Tetris. Cheap Tetris rocks. And while we're at it, we should totally keep track of how many times the ESRB and USK have tipped us off to Arcade games before they officially get announced. The total has to be in the hundreds ... or at least it feels that way.[Thanks Game Stooge, Via Xbox-Archiv]

  • USK rates Bungie's Marathon for 360

Last November, just prior to Halo's birthday, we (wildly) speculated that Marathon might be heading to Xbox Live Arcade. Obviously, we were incorrect ... then. It seems our precognitive powers were even more potent than we realized, as Marathon, Bungie classic and spiritual predecessor to Halo, has been rated by the USK (Germany's ratings board) for the Xbox 360. To be precise, the entry is for Marathon: Durandal, which is actually Marathon 2. This leaves us to wonder whether the original will make the jump as well. Already our minds are reeling with yet more speculation. Will Marathon: Durandal receive a graphical upgrade? Will we see each game in the series hit Xbox Live Arcade, leading up to the inevitable release of Halo 3? We have no idea, but we hope we'll be hearing more soon. [Via XBLArcade. Thanks, Ankalagon]

  • Just the thing for XBLA: solitaire!

Our favorite European ratings board, the Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (say that three times fast), has rated a game called Soltrio Solitaire for the Xbox 360. We're not exactly itching to plunk down $60 for a game of Solitaire, so we're assuming that this title is bound for Xbox Live Arcade. XBLA is already host to several card games, but solitaire is currently absent. Would anyone out there be interested in a solid solitaire game on Xbox Live Arcade? For the record, Track & Field has also been rated.[Via Xbox Archive]

  • Germany says NEIN to Gears of War

Entschuldigung Cliffy B, aber dein Spiel ist verboten! VERBOTEN! Germany's Unterhaltungssoftware Selbskontrolle (USK), the German version of the ESRB, has refused to give the upcoming Gears of War a rating due to the game's violence. This doesn't outright ban the game in the country, but puts it in a state of limbo. This is the second time in recent memory that the USK denied to rate a game due to violence, they used the same tactic on Capcom's Dead Rising. German gamers currently need to import Dead Rising from another European country to play.German politicking and regulations on video games has always been strong. Despite the Wolfenstein series' anti-Nazi message, images of swastikas and Nazism are still banned in the country -- unless in a historial context -- and therefore no Wolfenstein for the Germans. It is understandable that Germany might be a little sensitive on that whole Nazi thing; however, the USK not rating a game, whatever the reason, as a tactic to passive aggressively ban it is an insulting move against the German people. Doesn't the USK trust German gamers, especially adults, to make up their own minds?

  • Dead Rising not banned, facing unique 'unrated' status in Germany

    by

Over on his blog, Xbox Live Germany's Boris Schneider-Johne breaks down the peculiar circumstances surrounding Dead Rising's status in Germany. Earlier this week, reports suggested that Germany's software rating organization, USK, had outright banned the title. Schneider-Johne explains that it's more complicated than that.In Germany, a game can't be banned until it's released. And it's not USK that bans the game, it's Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien (a.k.a. Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons) -- or 'BPjM' for short. But BPjM can't ban a game that's rated, so, in order for a game to be banned, USK must decide not to rate it. In other words, only 'unrated' games can be banned. But again, banning can't be applied until a game is released, and BPjM will only consider banning a title after a youth organization has applied for the ban. However, even if a game is banned, retailers can still sell it legally to adults, they just can't advertise the game. The catch is, Microsoft will not permit 'unrated' games to be published because it undermines the Xbox 360's built-in parental control system. So ... Schneider-Johne concludes, "Dead Rising could be legally sold in Germany, but won't be published." Confused yet?

  • Dead still not rising in Deutschland

The dead may be crawling out of their graves, but they can't escape the vagaries of the German software ratings bureaucracy. GameIndustry.biz clarified their earlier report on the status of Dead Rising to explain that, while the game isn't technically banned in land of lederhosen, the lack of a rating effectively prevents it from coming to market. Follow the link if you want the gory details. Leave it to a bunch of brain dead Euro-crats to kill a bunch of already rotting corpses. [Thanks Steve]

Another news bit from the 'stiq, Gaming Bits reports that the Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK) -- Germany's software ratings board -- will not approve Capcom's undead sandbox title, Dead Rising. If true, this would be the first 360 title to be banned anywhere. So, let's see. Lederhosen? No problem. Industrial death metal? Fine. Zombies? That's crossing the line! [Via Joystiq. Thanks, steve]
