  • Normal DS game + slightly different sticker = amazing collectible

eBay seller putermcgee's batch of DS games really isn't that different from other used DS games up for sale. The current bids are commensurate with other auctions for the same games, even. But these launch-era DS games are somewhat rarer (and more awesome) because they're all promo copies. How much would you pay for a copy of Pac-Pix or Meteos that was once used as a store demo? Because right now they're at $7.50 and $3.25 respectively. Kirby Canvas Curse and Nintendogs (with special Bark Mode gifts!) are at similar prices, as is a European version of WarioWare: Touched! These are the best kind of collectibles: cheap and not ridiculously impractical.[Via GameSniped]

  • Promotional Consideration: Dual screen theatre

Promotional Consideration is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out. The following DS Lite ads were taken from a series of Nintendo-sponsored station identification pieces (idents) aired over a year ago on Channel 4. For those of you unfamiliar with idents, they're short spots, often themed, stuck in between television shows to help "brand" the channel. In the case of this set, the UK public-service TV station bookended its comedy programs with Japanese theatre-styled advertisements for the DS's features and games. They're some of the most creative commercials we've seen for the handheld, so don't skip this post!

Being the jovial types that we are, there's nothing we enjoy more than a good, hearty belly laugh, and sometimes we struggle to contain our mirth while getting our DS on.WarioWare: Touched! was perhaps the first title to really make us laugh out loud, and more recently Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan and the Ace Attorney games have coaxed a titter or two from us. It's also worth noting that Kaboom Kaboom and Insecticide both look like they could contain a good few chuckles. We can't be alone in this respect, so which DS games crack you up?

  • WarioWare costume makes cosplay not fun anymore

Theresa Murphy's intentions were well-meaning when she planned out this costume, dressing up as Kat, half of the WarioWare series' ninja-sister duo. There must have been some misstep during the creation process, however, some supernatural treachery, that produced this absolutely creepy paper mache head. Our best guess is that a dying killer snuck into Theresa's house and performed a voodoo ritual to imbue the mask with his evil soul, all while she was distracted by a Geico TV commercial.Gone are our memories of Kat as a cute minigame ninja. In their place, we see a black and white scene of Kat pulling herself out of a well, her fingertips crusted with blackened blood and her skin sallow. She tramps toward us, and the only thing we can hear is the smack of her wet, sock-covered feet on hard ground. Our eyes are wide with horror, screaming, but we cannot move.

  • Dojo update: WarioWare brings its trademark randomness to Brawl

While the main arena of the new WarioWare stage may look like the standard floating-platforms-over-a-flat-space template found in pretty much every new Brawl stage, it has its own special quirks. The whole stage transforms into WarioWare microgames during play!In his post about the new stage, Masahiro Sakurai promises "rewards" for those who successfully complete the objective of each microgame. In the context of Smash Bros., we imagine that either to be a free item or damage for your opponents. The people who turn items off are going to hate this stage.%Gallery-3347%

  • System envy: 7 DS games I wish were on PSP

    by

    05.01.2007

I may write about PSP gaming news, but I own and play every system (including the new and next-gen consoles). So while I do get to play most any game I want, I can't help but wish in a feverish state, that certain system exclusives went to other consoles. In this case, if I wanted to list 7 DS games I'd love to see show up on PSP (however unrealistic that may be). So here it is: New Super Mario Bros (My favorite DS game, but I would like better power ups and more variety. It would also be great to see what the creators could do in 2D with the power of PSP) SNK vs Capcom Cardfighters (Addictive and strategic gameplay that makes me giddy. Only if it comes to PSP, add back in free-roaming and take out the game killing bug) Ace Attorney (Great characters, funny cases and it makes you think. That sorta game would work on any system) Kirby (He may be cute, but the gameplay is classic) Advance Wars (Because Field Commander is good, but not THIS good) WarioWare(Because there aren't enough mini-game titles on PSP) Meteos (Because every Q? Entertainment game should be on PSP) What about you reader? Are there any DS games you'd like to see on PSP, or do you refuse to even entertain the thought?

Reader Matthew, who attends George Washington University, sent us this video of him rocking the Wii on a pair of projector screens. In getting some time in with WarioWare Smooth Moves, we find ourselves incredibly jealous of the fun these fine chaps are having. Of course, we'll be the ones laughing when they get the bill for this semester.Head past the post break to catch the video.

  • Blowing on the DS sucks (or: the huff-and-puff games)

    by
    Tony Carnevale

    04.11.2007

MTV News' Stephen Totilo has discovered the first video game innovation he's ever hated: "blow control" on the Nintendo DS. When he was commanded to literally exhale air at the system's built-in microphone in WarioWare: Master of Disguise, Totilo decided, "I don't see the point. What I see is embarrassment at having to hyperventilate over my DS while riding the subway." That seems like the point to us.Press the Buttons' Matthew Green agrees with Totilo, and calls Diddy Kong Racing DS the worst offender of the "huff-and-puff" games. "I did so much huffing and puffing to try and beat the clock that I made myself dizzy and had to go lie down for a while." From DS hyperventilation to Wii elbow, Nintendo really loves making gamers get in touch with their doughy, neglected bodies. Wii Yoga, anyone?

  • WarioWare: Smooth Moves' heightened gaming vignettes

    by

    03.19.2007

Frantic sets of microgames have been the standard of every entry in the WarioWare series, forcing gamers to assess and complete outlandish objectives at a frightening pace. While each title has its own "gimmick" with its microgames (e.g. Twisted!'s motion sensor), WarioWare Touched! and WarioWare: Smooth Moves have the responsibility of proving the newly-launched systems they debuted on. Working with these quick bursts of gameplay, these two games promote how the features of the DS and Wii can be taken advantage of, providing hundreds of examples in an enjoyable, playable format. The New Gamer has an editorial on the steps Smooth Moves takes to successfully advertise the Wii remote's capabilities. Each five-second game manages to quickly retrain us on how we're interacting with the controller and what's on our screens, using condensed levels of popular games, memorable stances, and familiar situations for these brief vignettes. Because of these design decisions, adapting to the 100+ microgames ends up being more fun than intimidating, vindicating the Wii remote with each satisfying bite of gameplay.

  • Playing Wii on a PSP

Looks like PSP users are so keen to get in on the excitement that is Wii that they'll even put up with a six second lag, just to get in on the action. You can't buy desperation publicity like that. No, we kid. While we do like to poke fun at everyone who isn't us, this is actually pretty interesting. Owner of what is apparently a PSPwii combo, obiwan222222 (the extra pair of twenty-twos is what makes it original) essentially set up his PSP as a monitor to continue the quest to meld everything with the Wii. Next up? The toaster!Check out the video on PSP Fanboy to see this one in action. We would have liked to have seen him try to actually play the Wario Wario he was spinning in the video, if nothing else. Lag would translate to a very short playtime experience there ... or a very challenging one.

  • Readers pick best webcomic: Smooth Moves

Before we get with the post, a note of thanks to all the commenters that, until this morning at least, were very civil and kind in their discussion of this week's webcomic wrapup. Sure, we've all thought about the dirty things Wario would make us do if Smooth Moves was not an all-ages Nintendo title. VG Cats' Scott Ramsoomair makes the latest crack on the joke and takes top titles. Second place goes to the Penny Arcade Sony satires, while third was apprehended by Scott Johnson of Extra Life. Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any gaming comics you stumble upon this week!

  • Japanese pop star shows us some Smooth Moves

The Japanese pop star is none other than Ayumi Hamasaki, who is (according to her Wikipedia page) one of the country's most famous singers. Well, for how famous she is, she's not used any of her wealth or free time to master the minigames in WarioWare: Smooth Moves. She flops many of the minigames, including using the tennis racket to bounce a ball and shaking a puppy's hand. Not only that, but she's just about the worst at the chaffeur boss stage we've ever seen. Still though, the video is worth a laugh as just about anyone looks like a total idiot when they're playing this game. Be sure to keep an eye on Wii Fanboy as we're set to give away a copy of WarioWare: Smooth Moves to one lucky reader. [via Codename Revolution]

Many of you are just getting your hands on a Wii (at last!) and others are just settling in for more in depth play on your games, so we figured it was a good time to ask: what have you played? What have you skipped? Which games have you liked most so far? This particular blogger has only been a little disappointed with Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, due to the controls. Everything else has been pretty engaging. Twilight Princess, Wii Sports, and Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam (skateboarding games are a longtime habit a girl just can't shake) have gotten the most play on this Wii, though we're always happy to throw down on a variety of other games. More recently, it's been extensive sessions of Wario Ware: Smooth Moves. But hey, we figure everyone's got different tastes ... so how about you? Don't be shy -- tell us what you've liked so far!

    02.02.2007

What with all this noise about Wii parties, it seemed fitting to turn this week's spotlight on a video that showcases just that sort of thing -- friends getting together and gently kicking each others' asses, Wii style. Sure, it's nothing new to get together with friends and play video games. We've been doing it for years, and if you're here, it's likely that you are, too. But this deal with everyone scheming on our Wii, that's new. The system has become the focus of so many gatherings of gamers that today's video just seemed, well, familiar. Check it out after the jump. If any of you guys are taking Wii footage of your friends and family as well, let us know! We'd love to feature entertaining videos made by the members of our own community.
