WebObjects, Apple's little discussed web application framework, has been updated for Leopard. That's right, Apple still makes WebObjects and it would seem they even have an engineer or two actively working on it. The update clocks in at 153 MB and includes many bug fixes which are always welcome.

If you don't have an interest in how large scale web applications work, then Erica Sadun's recent post on the MacDevCenter isn't for you. She reveals some of the web service calls that the iTunes Music store uses, as well as breaks down the actual WebObject applications that form the iTunes Music Store (kinda like Voltron). It is very technical, but interesting to this Mac geek at least.

I would imagine that most Mac users know nothing about WebObjects. It is the Apple technology that runs the Apple Online Store, and the iTunes Music Store (just to name a couple of high volume sites that use it) and it turned 10 yesterday. The MacObserver has a great article up that sheds some light on what is commonly called 'Apple's Best Kept Secret.'[via Tales from the Red Shed]

WebObjects is Apple's often overlooked Java based  web application/services tool, and it looks like this WWDC has been good to it. Version 5.3 has been released and bundled with Xcode 2.1.Xcode 2.1 is free, therefore Apple has just made all the developer tools for WebObjects free, and they weren't cheap a few hours ago. It has long been rumored that Apple might release WebObjects under an open source license and recent developments don't exactly pave the road for such a release but they anchor them in reality at the very least. In addition to being bundled (for free) with Xcode, 'This release also provides an updated WebObjects Builder, HTML/XHTML compatibility, Java Collection Classes support, updated WebServices, and Oracle 10g support.'[via tales from the red shed]
