So you've built your own homebrew CNC mill and want to test out some recent modifications? That's a question few ever have to ask themselves, but DIYer Jamie Nasiatka recently did, and came up with the bright idea of making his very own Weighted Companion Cube. As you can see above, things turned up pretty well, and you can check out the complete build process at the source link below -- yes, it lights up, and changes colors. Let's just hope no one tries to throw this cube through a Portal t-shirt.

  • April Fools: Chains of Olympus contains hidden 'Cube of War' mode

Hot off its "Best Handheld Game" win at the 2009 Game Developer Choice Awards, Ready at Dawn has divulged the existence of a previously undiscovered mode within God of War: Chains of Olympus. Called "Cube of War," it allows players to take on the game's menagerie of murderous malcontents as ... an Aperture Science Weighted Companion Cube.RAD isn't saying how the deal to get the Cube in the game -- and out of Portal -- was struck, but it does have instructions on unlocking this tasty (like cake) triumph: "if you finish Chains of Olympus in god mode, no upgrades, and collect all the urns of power twice without dying you open up the companion cube as a hidden character." If you can muster that, we'd consider it a huge success. If you can't, at least watch what you're missing after the break.

  • Behold, the unweighted Companion Quilt!

It's been a while since we lavished some love on our favorite inanimate game character. We are, of course, talking about the Weighted Companion Cube from the best game evar, Portal. So, check out this completely awesome Weighted Companion Cube quilt. Don't go looking to snap up one for yourself just yet though, as it appears to be one of a kind. It was purchased by blogger That Girl, who bought it from a very gifted crafter known as Punzie. It's worth noting that Punzie does have quite a few other products featuring video game themes and characters (we're particularly fond of the Triforce pillow). Who knows, maybe if you ask nicely enough, you might get a Companion Quilt of your very own.[Thanks, Simca]

  • A late April Fools' entry: EQII's Weighted Companion Chest

We nearly missed this one, but thankfully one of our readers didn't, and sent us this screenshot of a chest in EverQuest II. Looks just a little bit different doesn't it? Another nod to the gaming world's beloved Portal, it seems that players were treated to Weighted Companion Chests in EQII for April Fools' Day. Hopefully you looted that quest starter before tossing the chest in the Emergency Intelligence Incinerator, Rollins![Thanks, Rollins]

Looking for love in all the wrong places? Our favorite non-threatening life mate the Weighted Companion Cube (of Portal fame) has stripped down to its bare essentials and become the W.C. Crate as part of World of Warcraft's Valentine's celebration, dubbed "Love is in the Air." We only wish there was a special stab-friendly weapon drop that went along with discovering the crate.6Be sure to also check out WoW Insider's guide to the "Love is in the Air" holiday currently as it captures the hearts of all Azeroth citizens. Aikiwoce sent us this pic over on the WoW Insider tipline (here's ours, if you have a tip for us), but it was just too good not to share with you Massively-ers, too (Massives? Massivliers?). Love is in the Air has started up for Valentine's Day in the World of Warcraft, and there is a familiar-looking heart-adorned cube sitting outside of the major cities. Yes, anyone who's played Portal (not an MMO, but my choice for GotY last year-- it was a triumph, and a huge success) will immediately recognize this as a tribute from Blizzard to another terrific PC game.No wonder Wrath of the Lich King is taking longer than expected-- all the developers at Blizzard must have been spending all their time looking for cake.

  • The Weighted Companion PC isn't bitter or anything

Got that song stuck in your head? You know, the song. Go ahead, hum a few bars, nobody's going to notice. "This was a triumph..." Bet it's in there now! Now, while you spend the next 6-8 weeks trying wrench that beautiful melody from you head, you can concentrate on the harm you've caused to innocent weighted companion cubes over the world, and think about making restitution. Take this homage built by Magnus Persson, for example: it allows the cube to fulfill a higher calling as a case for a VIA Epia EX1500G, and it looks pretty too -- it's almost like that little incident never happened!

So, uh, hey there Joystiq Nation. You know what? It's almost 2008, JT (Joystiq Time) and you know what that means, right? Our picks for best games of the year are dropping tomorrow but tonight ... tonight we're going to be drinking away all the pain 2007 inflicted upon us (and our very worn-out wallets). To help us dull the hurt of 2007, we're staring at former GameSpotter Rich Gallup's gorgeous little metal Weighted Companion Cube (milled by his brother who, we might add, must be very handsome and, above all, generous). Raise your glass to him and his cube, while you read more about it here.As for us, we'll see you in '08 kiddos. By quite a large margin, Scott Ramsoomair's VG Cats took the top spot in the webcomic wrapup this week -- but is it a love for Valve's amazing game Portal or a fascination with endangered infants that drove our readers en masse to vote?Second and third place go to Penny Arcade and 2P Start, respectively. Thanks to everyone who voted; be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

  • Official plush Weighted Companion Cube coming soon

Yes, yes, we know: "Too many posts about Portal", "We're sick of hearing about Portal", "All you ever talk about is Portal", but shut up for a second, because we have some more Portal news to share. It seems that Valve is answering our prayers and will soon be selling the oft-adored Weighted Companion Cube in huggable plush form.In addition to the larger stuffed version of our best friend, Valve is also working on a pair of smaller ones for hanging on rear-view mirrors. We're confused as to how there could be two Companion Cubes, but we'll just assume it's an illusion created by portals. No price, no release date, and no additional details accompany the announcement. But isn't the photo alone news enough?[Via Eurogamer]
