Need to get your living space ready before downloading Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD? Removable wall graphic company Blik is currently offering Wind Waker-themed wall decals for $37 apiece, each designed to look like a stained glass window. The company has six designs available, featuring Link with the Wind Waker, Link with his sword, Link with the Hero's Bow, Link with a grappling hook, Link and the Helmaroc King, and Link with a Zelda profile background. Unfortunately, these renditions of Link can't come alive and go on adventures; you'll have to wait for A Link Between Worlds for that.

While we were totally aware the Wii U port of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD was arriving in October, Nintendo dated it for October 4 in Europe in today's Direct broadcast. However, Nintendo of America didn't provide a date in its presentation, so the game remains in its October release window in North America. We'll have to wait to see what release date washes up on North American shores in the near future.

The upcoming Wii U port of the Gamecube's treasure-hunting The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD is currently $50 on Amazon. The remake features off-screen play and revamps the original's cel-shaded visuals into a Pixar-esque cartoon style in 1080p. The new "Tingle Bottle" item allows players to communicate over Miiverse by channeling Sting hurling bottled messages into the ocean. Messages will also wash up on the shorelines of other players. The original game's "Pictograph" camera now carries Miiverse support and will allow players to post screenshots in the social service's Wind Waker community. Wind Waker HD will launch in October 2013 on Wii U.

This morning's Nintendo Direct confirmed two new Zelda games for Wii U, namely an HD remake of GameCube game Wind Waker with improvements to gameplay and graphics, and a brand new entry that will address series conventions like "completing the dungeons in a certain order", and to "play by yourself." The Wind Waker HD remake is expected "by this fall."In the Nintendo Direct broadcast, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma said the new Wii U entry's mission statement is to "rethink the conventions of Zelda," including things like linear progression through dungeons. Aonuma went on to say the new Zelda game will take some time before it is released. We won't have to wait as long for Wind Waker on Wii U, though. In addition to visual and gameplay tune-ups, the remake features off-TV GamePad play and is Miiverse-compatible. %Gallery-177048%

  • The Soapbox: Remembering that games are games

I think it's safe to assume that we all love games. If we didn't, I wouldn't be in this crowded, noisy coffee shop writing this and you wouldn't be blowing off some sort of important responsibility reading it. We're all here together, engaged in this somewhat-anonymous internet back-and-forth, because games have touched our lives. It sounds corny, but it's true. For many of us, games have a deeply personal and specific meaning. We like the games we like not so much for their craftsmanship or content but for the way they engage our minds and spirits. Games create incredible, irreplaceable moments infused with emotional resonance, and it's only natural we would feel some sort of personal connection when a piece of digital entertainment syncs just right. It is precisely this personal connection that leads many of us to act like total morons.

We think our dad is pretty cool, but here's a secret: he's not as cool as this dad. Our dad never put in three months of hard work (over 150 hours!) on something for us before we were even born. Way to look like a chump, pop. With a baby on the way, Cole enlisted the aid of his buddy Wes to create a nursery modeled around The Legend of Zelda series – specifically, Wind Waker and Spirit Tracks. The result is the video above, a tour of a room decked out in Links and Zeldas, ships and trains, and soon ... whatever it is that happens as a result of having a baby.

Alyse isn't just your usual Legend of Zelda fan -- aside from the drawer full of Link-themed clothing and decorative Majora's Mask cup set sitting in her cupboard, she's now also the proud owner of the gigantic Lego mosaic you see above. The product of her brow's sweat and her hand's work, the mosaic was created for Brickcon, an annual event that celebrates adult Lego hobbyists. Head on over to her Flickr account for shots of the impressive feat throughout its development (the above shot is of her husband, Remi, and the Lego computer case he built), something Alyse documented because she "was inspired by many of the stained glass artwork from Wind Waker." If we had enough patience to do something like this, we probably wouldn't have jobs on the internet. [Via The Tanooki]

In this little hobby of ours, there are undeniable classics. Only an utterly clueless fanboy will ignore Shigeru Miyamoto's contributions to gaming, and any Nintendo enthusiast can never deny the quality of a series like Halo or God of War. No matter the platform, there are games which make up the foundation of this medium as we've come to know it. Traditionally, the formula would seem to be game made by a respectable company + a few years to let it sink in = indisputable classic. Yet there are a few that still provoke debate. These are games that are neither universally adored nor hated. They almost always spark conversation, and are considered by some to be an acquired taste. Here are the Top 5 games that we all can't decide if they're classics or not. • One-man band covers Wind Waker theme

If we wrote about every fan-made cover of Nintendo theme songs that slid across our desks inboxes, we'd find ourselves with little time to write about all the hard-hitting news that you crave. However, we think it would be irresponsible to not pass along this incredible rendition of the opening theme to Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, largely due to the fact that its exponentially better than the original. The acoustic cover, which is posted after the break, was performed by YouTube composer Fredrik Larsson -- and only YouTube composer Fredrik Larsson. Through the magic of non-linear editing, Freddy pools his musical talents to piece together an incredible tribute to one of Nintendo's unsung themes. We suggest having Link's oceanic adventure on-hand should you decide to check the video out -- trust us, you'll feel compelled to revisit it.[Thanks, Chris.]

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/nintendo/Nintendo_s_5_Biggest_Surprises_Throughout_History'; This week's press conference from Nintendo was like Reggie himself coming to your door, clutching a bouquet of awesome announcements, and saying "I'm sorry about E3." Indeed, I can't help but think that just one of the awesome titles announced in the past week could have prevented much of the animosity hurled at Nintendo following their ho-hum presentation at the summer exhibition. But then again, Nintendo has always been one to surprise us. They've made good moves and bad, interesting decisions coupled with utterly clueless assumptions, and made us wonder what the hell they were thinking while amazing us with what they're capable of. Because you probably should watch it againWe were pleasantly surprised by the House of the Dead: Overkill trailer. We haven't seen such a quality trailer since ... well, maybe ever. We're genuinely pumped for the game. But, enough about us. What was your most memorable trailer? The Metroid Prime E3 trailer? The first Wind Waker footage? What was your favorite and most memorable trailer?

We hate to sound like your mother, Mr. I-Can-Mod-a-GameCube, but your fingernails (well, one nail, on your thumb) look pretty dirty. In fact, the unit itself looks like it could use a good cleaning as well. And, those vents look like they were made with a ballpoint pen in some Styrofoam. But, we don't want to be too harsh. Because, and we'll be perfectly honest, we wouldn't ever be able to get past the first stage of creating a portable gaming system: unplugging the console and hacking it apart. We'd probably just pop in Twin Snakes, sit down and forget about the mod altogether.

Most Zelda fans can brag about beating Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Yet, how many of us can boast that we've beaten those four games in 48 straight hours? Probably none.Cameron Banga and his friends will soon have that right, though. They've made it their mission to not only trek through the four 3D Zelda games, but beat them in a 48 hour deadline (which expires tomorrow at 5PM CST). They are also showing their exploits to the world by webcasting the event here. So, are these guys gods among men or just in need of a new hobby? It's up to you to decide.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Okay, that's it. We're done. From now on, gamer weddings just don't matter. They're empty, soulless shells next to this. Sure, Tetris cakes are awesome, and Zelda ice sculptures are cool as, well, ice, but this one takes the cake -- literally. This Wind Waker-inspired wedding cake is a work of art. We're pretty sure we wouldn't even be able to cut it, much less eat it ... in fact, we would need to create some sort of force field technology to preserve this thing until the end times. Bounce on over to Kotaku if you want to see the top in detail, and weep that you do not have such an item preserved on a high shelf in your home.Unless you do. In which case, we want it.

  • DS Daily: Legend of Zelda: Item of Great Importance

According to the latest news about The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, the eponymous hourglass keeps your hearts from draining while in a cursed underwater shrine. Link must go from island to island to find sand so he can keep the hourglass full. Basically, he is addicted to sand. That sounds like an interesting gameplay mechanic, lending the game a sort of Fushigi no Dungeon-esque resource upkeep element (like keeping the light glowing in The Nightmare of Druaga.) However, that's not the issue for today's discussion. We want to talk about the item as it relates to Zelda's history. In most Zelda games since the N64 one, there has been an item in the title that is central to the game's plot and/or gameplay-- the Ocarina of Time and the very similar Wind Waker, Majora's Mask, Four Swords, the Minish Cap, and now the Phantom Hourglass. Do you think basing the game (and its title) around a single item is a neat storytelling convention, or lazy formulaic design? We are declaring this a Safe Zelda Bashing Zone. Don't be afraid to say something negative about Zelda! Here, we'll start: the first one didn't even have a subtitle, and it's still the best one.[News item via NeoGAF]

When I was a kid my older brothers were always using their LEGOs to build the entire Star Wars universe. By the time I got older, LEGO was doing that for me-kinda took away from the fun, you know? I'm relieved to find out that you can't buy the LEGO-version of just any popular franchise... yet. That's right, if you wanna play Zelda, then you're gonna have to build Zelda! [Thanks, Shizzle]
