It's update time in the world of Wizard101, and KingsIsle has released a mammoth set of patch notes to go along with its new Zafaria content. What's Zafaria? It's a whole new slice of the game world comprised of six unique areas that can be accessed with a Wizard101 membership or via individual purchases. The game's level cap has also been raised (to 70), and the requisite new gear is present as well. New spells can also be found in the update, as can new henchmen and improved character stats. There's a bunch more for you to read about (including info on a new music player!), so head to the official Wizard101 website for all the details.

  • Wizard101 offers reimbursement for Sunday downtime

Wizard101 players may have noticed some unplanned downtime in their gameplay Sunday afternoon. J. Todd Coleman, aka Headmaster Ambrose, stopped by the forums today to clarify the issue. The technical problem that caused the downtime has since been fixed, but Coleman has said that some players may have experienced a loss of items acquired just prior to the downtime. But don't fret, Wizard101 players. The team keeps detailed logs of all acquired items, and any items acquired (or crowns spent) prior to the downtime will be reimbursed, even if the item was not actually lost. The team understands that erring on the side of caution such as this will result in some players receiving double the loot, but Coleman states that this outcome is "far preferable to running the risk of some players not recovering lost items. All items should be successfully reimbursed within the next 24 to 48 hours. For the full details on the problem and subsequent recovery, head on over to the game's official forums.

  • Choose My Adventure: Soloing a dungeon isn't a good idea edition

What a week in Wizard101! Not only was I humiliated over and over in my attempts to conquer a dungeon all by myself, but I was later joined by three higher-level players in that same dungeon and received schooling from them. It turns out that there are more cards that you can shake a wand at, and I hardly knew about any of them. I am, for sure, teh noob. I still had a blast, though, and learned all about prisms and other types of cards that give strategical advantages in combat. It was a little too much to take in all at once, especially for an airhead like yours truly. Playing with people like Kevin Battleblood, Leesha Darkheart, and Fallon Deathslinger essentially made me feel like I was doing everything wrong. But to be fair, they have been playing far longer than I and I had recently retooled my deck for soloing. I have to learn to take instructions from others. I'm not very good at it, and I generally enjoy soloing. When I am in a group, I tend to joke around or simply stay quiet -- grouping is just not my thing normally. In Wizard101, however, grouping is very beneficial to new players. While everything that I was told was sort of going in one ear and out the other, I picked up some great tips. Click past the cut and I'll tell you all about it and about my week (so far) with gardening.

  • Pets *ding* in Wizard101

A wizened sage once asked, "How much is that doggie in the window?" Perhaps he was contemplating the tangible cost of loyalty and companionship. Perhaps he was attempting to ascribe value to an animal's existence. What he missed was just how awesome pig ninjas can be when unleashed in a wizardly world. Wizard101 just released their May 2010 patch, which revolves around an incredibly beefy and interactive advanced pet system. While pets have been in the game since launch, it's with this patch that they've been given a life outside of pure vanity. Pets can now roam around player housing, engage in mini-games, be bred to perfection, and even cast a handful of spells in a fight. It is possibly one of the deeper pet systems in MMORPGs to date, and worthy of any young (at heart) wizard's or witch's attention. This Wizard101 patch also includes a host of other updates, ranging from badges to characters, housing, spells and more. If you're into this colorful title, make sure to take a few minutes to digest the whole list of notes, which can be found here.
