  • Waging WAR: On the distant horizon

It's that time again! Yes, Greg's imagination has escaped its tiny 3x3 cell and is off spreading ruination and ruffling feathers across the countryside, armed with absurd notions and a not-so-surprising lack of reason and logic. This week's Waging WAR attempts to follow along in its wake as we take another look at the potential future of Warhammer Online: The Age of Reckoning. WAR released with an impressive lineup of playable armies and careers, setting the stage for the Age of Reckoning with a 3v3, two-sided RvR layout. In the summer following the official release of WAR, we got our first free content expansion featuring the Tomb Kings in the Land of the Dead. Just recently, we finally, at long last, got our Skaven wishes granted. In the spirit of the holiday season coming up, I've decided to look ahead at what may come in the future as we approach new horizons in WAR. Even if we discount Brettonia as another flavor of civilized human (akin in many ways to the Empire), the Daemons of Chaos as being already represented in some form or another as a part of Tzeentch's Warhost, and the Ogre Kingdoms (and other assorted Dogs of War) as being more-or-less an NPC army, we're still left with some excellent offerings from Warhammer lore as far as where WAR can go in the foreseeable future. Follow along after the break as I take another look at what's left on the table to play with for future packs and expansions for WAR.

WAR's must-have expansion races: SkavenWe're still months away from the release of Mythic's Warhammer Online, but already the robust fan community has spent a considerable amount of time debating which of the other Warhammer Fantasy races would be best suited to make the jump from the tabletop to the desktop. Whle the choices are quite plentiful, in my mind, there's no question which race is on the doorstep of gaming greatness; it's those lovably infectious rat-men, the Skaven. WAR's must-have expansion races: Beasts of ChaosWhere there is Order, there are must be Destruction. Warhammer aficionados will probably already have guessed, but the fourth expansion race that we'd like to see added to Mythic's vibrant-looking game is none other than the Beasts of Chaos. WAR's must-have expansion races: LizardmenWe're throwing our weight behind the enigmatic Lizardmen Army to play the Order counterparts to Skaven's Destruction. They've got a number of interesting classes we think would add some unique jungle flava' to the game. WAR's must-have expansion races: Wood ElvesWe'll make the case that the secretive Wood Elves deserve their rightful place at the front of the expansion queue. They've got a bevy of distinct classes that really set themselves apart from the pack.

In case you missed it already, we've already gone through Round One of our choices for possible Warhammer Online expansion races. In our ideal fantasy land (where, incidentally, the game was already so polished it didn't need to be delayed until Fall), the first races to hit the ground would be the plague-ridden Skaven and the noble and enigmatic Lizardmen. There are several reasons why we chose the races we did, not the least of which are their transplantability from the tabletop to an MMO as well as that always omnipresent "cool" factor. But while Skaven and Lizardmen are kings in our mind's eye, that doesn't mean they're the only race that makes sense for an expansion. No, this time around we'll make the case that the secretive Wood Elves deserve their rightful place at the front of the expansion queue. They've got a bevy of distinct classes that really set themselves apart from the pack.Click on the gallery link below to take a trip to the twisted world of Athel Loren.%Gallery-19193%
