click for the full, embiggened gallery var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/xbox/Hands_on_with_Call_of_Duty_World_at_War_beta'; This week, we had the chance to enlist into the Call of Duty: World at War beta for Xbox 360, which features a handful of online maps to play. What follows is a back-and-forth discussion of our initial impressions after playing the game for a few hours. Alexander Sliwinski: Um, isn't it just Call of Duty 4 with a different setting? Ross Miller: More or less, and I think that's a great way to describe the game: It's Call of Duty 4, with a few differences. For example, instead of helicopters, you've got dogs.

Activision has unleashed the Call of Duty: World at War beta token flood gates and officially launched the friends and family beta. What? Not considered to be part of the uber l33t CoD friends and family? Then know that they've also started the beta code awarding process where, if you're a prestigious member of the Call of Duty community you'll get an invite in the coming days. Or, for the not so loyal, you can simply pre-order World at War at Gamestop and you'll be guaranteed beta entry. Good luck and play safe![Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]

There's a newly new Call of Duty: World at War trailer making the internet rounds this morning and, truth be told, it's both destructive AND flammable. We guess that's why the Activision folks decided to call this latest trailer "Fire and Destruction." Makes sense. You can watch the latest trailer in the embedded area above to witness rockets rain down on evil doers, flame throwing tanks ignite buildings and watch as the enemy burns to a blackened crisp. It's World at War, enjoy.

You might need to fill that flask, er, "canteen" with more than just Kool-Aid if you plan to make it through the first few weeks of Call of Duty 5 Call of Duty: World At War boot camp. You see, you bought the "Limited Collector's Edition," which includes, in addition to a storage tin (guaranteed to fit other Treyarch games!) and the aforementioned sipping container, the infamous "Day One Advantage." As if spotting the guy with the ridiculously over-powered machine gun won't be easy enough, you'll also be pinned with a "uniquely colored clan tag" identifying your "VIP-status" in online multiplayer. In other words: Everybody kill that guy! Yeah, you.

Has it been a while since you played a WWII shooter? Well, Treyarch is hoping you're saying "yes" for the upcoming Call of Duty: World at War. The follow-up to last year's GOTY-winning Call of Duty 4 goes back to the past and adds a few new features, like this new 4 player online co-op mode. No longer will you go through war alone. Join three of your friends and gain XP in World at War's most exciting feature.Check out the very M-rated trailer after the cut. (And uh ... be over 17 years old when watching the trailer, or the ESRB is going to hurt us. Thanks.)

  • Premium 'Day One Advantage' heading to CoD: World at War

"The average Call of Duty player has spent nearly five full 24-hour days of their lives online since purchasing the game," said Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith at the company's Analyst Day. An impressive feat, but one that leads to, as Griffith pointed out, "opportunities to monetize online gameplay." Time is money, as they say.Edge Online reports the Call of Duty publisher will place higher priority on downloadable content for the upcoming Treyarch-developed installment, World at War, promising three times as much content and an ominously titled "premium" offering called "Day One Advantage." According to Alt + F4, this "advantage" manifests in online experience points being earned faster by paying players. If the game follows Call of Duty 4's online model and doles out better equipment at higher experience levels, the DLC will essentially give less thrifty gamers a headstart in the game's early days. We've contacted Activision (and Michael Phelps) to confirm this information. Not that we're worried, since Griffith assured everybody that World at War would be "Treyarch's highest-quality game ever." Phew.[Update: Treyarch Community Manager JD took to the webs to clarify rampant rumors regarding this "Day One Advantage" – it's not a way to earn experience quicker; it's not a DLC pack available on "day one" ("we are putting absolutely all of the content we can onto the disc"); and it's not a free backrub from the developers at Treyarch. Instead, it's "immediate access to a high-level rifle (for pre-orders) or LMG (for collector's edition) that other players will have to unlock via ranking up in multiplayer."]Source -- Edge OnlineSource -- Alt + F4

  • Answer your Call of Duty this November

Veterans Day this year will be marked by silences, parades, and a bunch of people buying the latest Call of Duty game. Previous speculation that Call of Duty: World at War would launch in November has now been confirmed -- World at War will appear on November 11th, hopefully giving Wii owners an accomplished shooter to play before The Conduit arrives on the scene. For some time, Activision has promised us that the (Zapper-compatible) Wii title will be "comparable" to versions on other consoles, based as it is on the Call of Duty 4 engine. We'll see how robustly such claims hold up a couple of months from now.

Developer Treyarch has been hard at work getting ready to churn out the next Call of Duty game, and though this new title is quite a contrast to last year's CoD4 -- which took the series to modern times -- diehard fans of series can appreciate the return-to-roots WWII setting. Answering the call to arms in CoD5 Call of Duty: World at War is only a stone throw away as the game will hit retailers this November 11 for the PlayStation 3 and alongside other platforms.[Via press release]%Gallery-25926%

  • World at War beta announced, game's release slated for November 11th

    09.04.2008

Activision and Treyarch just sent out press materials announcing that they have a Call of Duty: World at War beta scheduled for release on the Xbox 360 and PC this October, following in the footsteps of its older Call of Duty 4 sibling. Registration for the beta can be completed via www.callofduty.com or through any game pre-order at Gamestop stores nationwide. Also, in the same press release, we receive confirmation that World at War will release to retailers in North America on November 11th. So, mark your iPhone calendars for that. It should also be noted that this World at War "beta" is more of a glorified demo, because the beta's release is extremely close to the retail release of the game. So, no matter what kind of feedback they receive from the beta, Treyarch probably won't have time to change the final code. Then again, they don't promise to use any beta feedback at all, mentioning in the press release that the beta is just an "early chance for players to practice the tactics needed for survival." As you can see, it's more of a multiplayer demo than anything else ... not that it's a big deal or anything. Full press release after the break.

As if winning eighteen thousand gold medals at the Beijing Olympics wasn't enough, swimmer Michael Phelps got a further reward for his awesomeness on last Thursday's CBS Early Show -- an early copy of Call of Duty: World at War provided by publisher Activision. But all was not as it seemed. As developer Treyarch revealed on its blog, the box Phelps was handed on live TV actually contained an I.O.U. card for the final version of the game, which is still in production. It's not all smoke and mirrors, though -- Phelps has been promised "the first disc off the production line ... later this year." We suppose that's understandable. Michael Phelps may be amazing, but it seems even he can't change the laws of time and space (or can he?) (no he can't).Check out a video of the "giveaway" after the break (jump to 3:28 for the moment of falsehood).[Via MTV Multiplayer]

For those of you looking to get your hands (or your Zapper) dirty in the Pacific theater, know that the Treyarch-developed Call of Duty: World at War will be hitting shelves this November, according to OnlytheGames. They're claiming an Activision PR rep divulged this info to them and we're inclined to believe it. November seems to be a good month to release games.Joystiq managed to pry a statement from Activision: "we haven't made any announcement about date other than fall of 2008." Oddly enough, November falls right into that timeframe.[Via Joystiq]

Embedded after the break is freshly squeezed, off screen gameplay footage of Call of Duty: World at War straight from the Games Convention. What's our first impressions of the video? Well, it doesn't look too bad. Really, it doesn't look all that bad. The initial jungle crash landing sequence is intense, the visuals (from what we can tell) look satisfying enough and even the "bunker clearing" seems enjoyable. Give the gameplay a looksy and judge for yourself.

During Nintendo's E3 keynote today, the promotional reel of third-party titles showed us something different about Call of Duty: World at War for the Wii. It will utilize the Wii Zapper!Aside from a brief clip of a young gentleman having the time of his life with the game, Wii Zapper clutched firmly in his hands, we've nothing else to report on the matter. But, then again, what else more would you need? It supports the Zapper.

  • More video game figures from McFarlane, this time it's Call of Duty

Todd McFarlane isn't sitting on his haunches, oh no. That just isn't how you create an action figure empire, you have to go after licenses like a foamy mouthed dog full of rabies and rage. And that's exactly what Toddy is doing, not only gobbling up the Guitar Hero license but now the Call of Duty: World at War franchise as well. That's right, today Todd McFarlane and crew just announced they are creating a set of four Call of Duty :World at War action figures that are (presumably) set to release later this year for around $10-$15 each. Included in the four figure set are some "highly detailed" figures including "Marine Infantry, Battle of Peleliu", "Marine Marine Corps with Flamethrower, Battle of Peleliu", "Marine Corps with Machine Gun, Battle of Okinawa" and "British Special Ops, Battle for the Roer Triangle". Overly long action figure names aside, we can't help but wonder what other video game licenses McFarlane will acquire in the near future. Our vote is for Roogoo ... we'd so support Roogoo figures.

Call of Duty: World at War has hit the intertrons! The official COD domain has always been a general-purpose website, but the latest information for the upcoming shooter has been granted its own dedicated section with a whole range of groin-grabbing goodies. The whole point of the site is the get involved with everything Call of Duty. You'll sign up and create your profile, and from there you can complete a variety of "missions" to earn points and level up. This include posting in the forums and taking part in polls, but you'll unlock more missions the further you progress within the site. Why does this sound like a video game? It's a website -- but a pretty good one at that. The Intel and Reconnaissance (that is, news and media) sections should be updated regularly, and a developer blog is up and running. Off you go, then![Via press release]
