As the calendar flipped to January yesterday, Xbox Live Gold members are now able to download this month's free games on Xbox One and Xbox 360. As revealed in December, Xbox One owners with a premium Live subscription can now pick up Access Games' quirky adventure D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die free of charge. Subscribers get two games on Xbox 360 this month: Offroad racer MX vs ATV Alive and CD Projekt's The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. D4 will be available throughout the month while the two previous-generation games are on a split schedule. MX vs ATV Alive is free until January 15, then The Witcher 2 will be available to download at no cost on January 16 through the end of the month. Lastly, according to the Microsoft Store, last month's Xbox One game Worms Battlegrounds is still available to download for free. [Image: Microsoft]

They call it Worms Battlegrounds, and it's coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later this month. Team 17 brings familiar fights to new consoles on May 30 in Europe, while in North America it's May 30 for Xbox One and June 3 for PlayStation 4. The intemperate invertebrates have 10 new weapons in their latest outing, including the intriguingly titled Winged Monkey, Gravedigger, and The Equalizer. On the single-player side there are 25 story missions and 10 time attack missions, while multiplayer brings four-player deathmatch and fort modes in both local and online varieties. That's all well and good, but the console-specific features are where it's at. On Xbox One players can use SmartGlass to keep track of stats (there's a companion site for PS4), while on Sony's console the DualShock light bar changes color depending on the status of your worm. Ladies and gentlemen, the next generation has arrived. [Image: Team 17]

Microsoft caught everyone's attention back when it introduced ID@Xbox. Now, nearly six months after the indie developer program was revealed, we're finally seeing the first titles to come out of it: Worms Battlegrounds and Nutjitsu. At this point, there are no specific details on when either game will be available on Xbox One -- all we know is that they'll land sometime in 2014. However, Joystiq does point out that ID@Xbox is expected to launch in Q1 of this year, which means the games' debut on Xbox One probably isn't far off. Oh, and don't fret if you're a PlayStation 4 owner, because Worms Battlegrounds is also headed your way.
