Xerox unleashes digital camera dictionary and cellphone scanning

xerox research

In a bid to get manufacturers buying into their latest technologies, Xerox have come up with two new ideas: a digital picture indexing technology that will search digital pictures based on the picture rather than words, and a technology that will allow cellphone digital cameras to act as scanners. Okay, simmer down - one at a time. First, the image dictionary will index photos based on the visual objects in them rather than text strings, so it will be able to recognize a car by its shape even if the photo is named DSC0022.jpg. On the flipside, Xeros also released a cellphone camera technology that will allow it to act as a scanner and ultimately OCR device. It requires at least a 1 megapixel camera, but if implemented, could be a life-saver in some situations.
