Pentax gets into cameraphones

Gareth Edwards

cameraphoneWell, Canon may not have taken our advice to start making cameraphones yet, but Pentax has announced that it's making a lateish move into cameraphone modules, with 2-3 megapixel models to be out by the end of this year. It also says that in fiscal 2006 it only plans to be making a quarter of its profits from the camera business, with the rest coming from camera modules, camera components for other companies, and medical equipment. All of which has a certain air of melancholy about it, until you find out that this reorganization is supposed to boost profits by about 130%, which makes everything all right again.
