Confirmed: changing your Gamertag will be possible with Xbox Live

new Xbox Live logo

Earlier in the week you may have read that it'll be possible to change your Gamertag with the Xbox 360. We thought this sounded cool since in the current Xbox Live once you've chosen a Gamertag, you're stuck with it. Unfortunately we couldn't find a source legit enough to confirm this, so naturally we fired off an email to the people that know: Microsoft's PR team.

They got back to us over the phone and confirmed this as a feature of the new Xbox Live. You will be able to change your Gamertag. Here's how it's all going to work:

If you opt to change your Gamertag, all of the information associated with your old Gamertag will stay with you - Friends List, achievements, ranking, feedback, stats, tournaments, etc. The only thing that changes is your Gamertag. Your new Gamertag will automatically appear on your Friends List. You can send a single message to all your friends via the message center to let them know about your new Gamertag.

How this works will be that your Gamertag will change in your friends? Friends Lists, but they?ll need notices from you that the change has occurred. The exact messaging mechanism has not currently been disclosed, but we imagine that the final mechanism won?t be too cumbersome to execute.

As with the current generation of Xbox Live, one cannot have multiple Gamertags linked to a single account. Subscribers can always have more than one Xbox Live subscription and Gamertag tied to it, but not multiple Gamertags on a single account. More details about the actual process of changing Gamertags are forthcoming.

So there ya? go then! You will be able to change your Gamertag with the Xbox 360. No more ?Dark Eegles? or ?Youre Mom? owning you with a rocket launcher (unless, of course, people are into that sort of thing).
