AMD to challenge Viiv

We already know that Intel's stance on the HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray issue is driven by their desire to promote Viiv, their upcoming media PC standard, and now we see AMD will have their own competing platform. AMD has already jumped into the Media Center PC market in a big way, and I didn't expect they would let Intel just steamroll them.

I had the opportunity to ask AMD about their stance on next generation DVD's recently and they responded they considered themselves neutral and would let the market decide. It will definitely be interesting to see where they go with this new strategy and how it affects what you can do with your PC and other media devices.

Also the article mentions that Viiv will lock customers into buying systems made with all-Intel hardware, I wonder how the competing video and sound card manufacturers will look at that.
