Hitachi's finger-vein reading car door handle

hitachi door handle vein reader

We'll start off by promising not to employ the overused (mostly by us) "now they'll have to cut off your ____ if they want to steal your ____" line that gets dragged out everytime something new gets secured biometrically. Now that you have our solemn vow to dispense with such foolishness, peep Hitachi's prototype of a vein-reading car door handle (on display at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show); Hitachi seems to be all about eschewing fingerprint readers for finger-vein readers (probably due to their smaller data files), seeing how they've planted the devices in ATMs, security doors, and a laptop that we spotted at CEATEC Japan. Apparently the door handle is curved to guide the user's hand into the proper position for an accurate reading, although information regarding the system's reliability has not been released by Hitachi. We still feel safer with our remote opener/starter, however, because you never know when heads are gonna take their beef with the Engadget mafia to the streets.
