JVC's 70-inch 1080p: outstanding

JVC 70 inch set

Does it get any better than a 70-inch 1920 x 1080 resolution in a progressive format? I don't think so and it's likely that David Katzmaier doesn't think so either. Dave got a review unit of JVC's monster D-ILA set and when we say "monster" we mean that we're glad we're not paying the shipping to return it! D-ILA is JVC's method of LCoS, or Liquid Crystal on Silicon; it's generally the same technology in the Sony SXRD set we recommended in our "12 HD Days of Christmas" series. Only it's bigger!

Katzmaier wasn't fond of some things like the remote and on-screen menu, but if the picture is half as good as he describes it, we say: "Who cares?" One of the most important items we would focus on would be the black levels and this is apparently where the set shines....er, that doesn't make sense, but you get the picture. This quote sums it up best: "...it became apparent that the big problem in previous iterations of JVC’s HD-ILA technology — namely, an inability to produce a convincingly dark “black” — is a thing of the past." We can't wait to see this $6,000 set in action ourselves, but it'll be a while. We figure the return shipping on the demo will cost more than an Xbox 360 on eBay. Check out the full review on this full sized set.
