Windlight in full release
As we predicted the Second Life 1.19.1 release candidates have been finalized and have now been released as the official viewer. Admittedly a day later than we predicted. We're going to have to send out for some crystal ball polish.
With the new release Windlight becomes a standard. Windlight was a rendering engine developed for high-performance gaming and graphically realistic environments. It was a whole lot faster and more relaible than Linden Lab's own rendering pipeline and had the advantage of some nifty eye-candy almost for free.
Admittedly such a major change to the viewer took time, and grew a few bugs of its own, over time, but it is in release, just short of a year after its first introduction.
1.19.1(4) is available right now for download (we use and recommend the use of a download manager) as the new official viewer. Windows users can expect about a 35MB download, Linux users around 55MB, and Mac users around 72MB (essentially double, because of the Universal Binary format).
If you aren't sure how well your system measures up you can check it against Linden Lab's minimum system requirements and recommended specs with an automated test (It appears that this test is Windows only).
