EVE Online's fifth CSM election results are in

Voting season is over in EVE Online's fifth CSM elections and the results are in! The Council of Stellar Management is EVE's democratically elected liaison council between CCP Games and the game's player-base. It's their job to collect a list of some of the best ideas and game design proposals suggested and voted on by players in the council forum. Once every six months, the council will meet with CCP for a week of rigorous meetings in Iceland to put forward those ideas and discuss their feasibility with EVE's development staff. There's no doubt that the CSM has had a legitimate impact on EVE's development and with this fifth term, they're even being given the ability to assign some development resources as they see fit.

Skip past the cut for a breakdown of this year's voting statistics and to meet the new members of EVE's CSM.

Getting people voting

Convincing people to vote in the CSM has been a difficult task for CCP. The first council election was preceded by huge media coverage and a heavy build-up to the voting process. A total of 24,651 players registered their vote in that first election back in 2008, putting participation levels at 11.08% of the total number of eligible accounts. The second election was a much bleaker story, with a voter turnout of only 8.61%. With CCP making a considerable effort to show players that the council had made an impact on EVE, the third election saw an increased voter turnout of 9.7%. That success was short-lived, however, as the removal of popular candidates from the running pushed participation in the fourth council elections down to 7.36%.

This year saw a few changes to the CSM and a record turn-out of 39,433 votes, making turnout 12.67% of the total number of eligible accounts. The majority of votes were cast in the first few days, with a last minute rush toward the end of the voting season. The average age of voters was 30.8 years, slightly higher than the average age of EVE 's player-base. Additionally, the average age of voting accounts was 2.18 years, showing that votes were mostly cast by veterans and that newer players were much less likely to vote. The average account age of voters was higher than previous years, indicating that newer players are not voting as much as they used to. Here at Massively, we've been doing our bit to try and get people voting. During the election period, we produced a handy candidate round-up guide to help voters pick the candidate that best supported their views. It seems our efforts had a significant impact on the voter turnout this year, with CCP Diagoras recording a spike of voters in the days following the article. As many as 4000 players may have been convinced to vote thanks to our round-up, which is around 10% of the total voter turnout or about 1.3% of the total accounts eligible to vote. Candidates also reported a noticeable climb in the number of hits to their campaign websites during this period.
