Flipboard brings magazines to the web, launches 'Big Ideas'

By now you're probably familiar with user-created magazines on Flipboard, a feature that was introduced for iOS back in March and added to Android in May. Starting today, you'll be able to enjoy Flipboard magazines on the web, including access to the By Our Readers section. This web edition even lets users with Flipboard accounts subscribe to magazines and "flip" stories right from within the browser. While the mobile app is still the best way to fully experience Flipboard, the web edition supports Chrome, Firefox, Safari and IE9+ in 11 languages. Moreover, the company is introducing "Big Ideas," a new category in the Flipboard Content Guide which "celebrates innovative ideas, great speeches, industry thought leaders and inspirational organizations." People Have Created Millions of Magazines on Flipboard, now They Can Share Them With Anyone Anywhere

July 23, 2013 - Palo Alto, Calif. - Starting today, anyone can read magazines created on Flipboard right in their Web browser. Millions of magazines have been curated by Flipboard readers, covering just about every topic imaginable, and now, for the first time, when people share those magazines, others will be able to enjoy them right from their desktop computer. Designed with beautiful covers, the iconic "flip" and a custom UI experience, this release takes Flipboard one step closer to opening its social magazine on the Web.

Flipboard, a single place for people to enjoy and curate the news they care about, launched the ability to collect content into custom magazines in late March. Since then, more than 2 million magazines have been created by Flipboard readers. Any of these magazines can be shared on social networks or in email by tapping the "share" button on the cover.

Flipboard magazines are curated by people who want to share their ideas, opinions or personal interests. Topics range from camping to cars and from independent filmmaking to immigration reform. Curators include political leaders, musicians, publishers and millions of everyday people with a passion. With the Web experience, Flipboard curators can share their magazines with friends, family and followers who may not have Flipboard. When flipping through the pages of a magazine on the Web, readers can tap the menu icon in the upper left to view "By Our Readers," featured magazines surfaced by the editors at Flipboard.

For people who have the mobile app and a Flipboard account, they can subscribe to any magazine using the Subscribe button on the magazine as well as use the "+" button to save stories into their own Flipboard magazines.

Downloading the app on a mobile device is still the only way to get the full Flipboard experience, including personalizing the social magazine, connecting social media accounts, accessing the Content Guide and creating a Flipboard account.

Also announced today is the launch of a new category on Flipboard called "Big Ideas." This new area features content and magazines on important issues, causes and ideas of our day. The nonprofits featured in this category will also be linking to their magazines from their web sites so anyone can easily open their Flipboard magazines right on a desktop computer.

Flipboard magazines on the Web are supported in the latest versions of desktop browsers including IE9+, Safari, Chrome and Firefox in 11 languages, including English, Japanese, Chinese, French and German.

Exclusive Interview With Larry King about his Cardiac Foundation kicks off Flipboard's new content category

July 23, 2013 - Palo Alto, Calif. - Today, "Big Ideas" launches on Flipboard, giving readers access to a brand new set of content ranging from eradicating poverty to fighting for human rights to protecting the environment. This new category in the Flipboard Content Guide celebrates innovative ideas, great speeches, industry thought leaders and inspirational organizations. The Flipboard team worked closely with nearly 20 nonprofits, including ONE Campaign, World Wildlife Fund and Charity:Water, to create new topic-based sections, from Food for All to Children's Causes. The nonprofit organizations involved have also created custom magazines, using Flipboard's platform to reach millions of people on mobile devices.

For the launch of "Big Ideas" the Larry King Cardiac Foundation created a magazine on healthy living; Direct Relief curated a magazine on humanitarian innovation; Free the Children focuses its magazine on clean water stories from across the globe; Doctors Without Borders is raising awareness of the work the organization is doing in Syria, and UNICEF curated a magazine focused on child labor around the world.

Readers can easily find the topics they care about in the Content Guide by tapping on the red ribbon inside Flipboard; then select the new category called "Big Ideas." The nonprofit organizations will have links to their magazines on their websites, making it easy to start reading these custom Flipboard magazines from any desktop, a new capability the company launched today.

"As people increasingly access news from their smartphones and tablets we want to give these great causes a mobile presence," said Mia Quagliarello, Flipboard's head of curation, who spoke with Larry King and his wife Shawn King in an exclusive interview.

"Our mission is to save hearts. Flipboard is a fantastic and fun platform to share stories about how to lead a heart healthy life. Whether it's highlighting a recipe or celebrating a community activist, we hope the magazines shine a light on how to be a be a heart star," said Larry King, founder of Larry King Cardiac Foundation.
