WRUP: Open PvP edition

In the future, people will still be shooting at one another. That's apparently a constant.

Open PvP was first introduced to the world by senior rock engineer Thag, who realized that he could communicate his displeasure with cavemate Thog's activities through more direct means. Over the past several thousand years, the ruleset has been updated and expanded many times, with new rules banning the use of certain abilities outside of designated warzones. These days, for much of the civilized world, PvP is instanced; to enter an instance, queue up at your local military recruitment office.

With that out of the way, let's get to this week's WRUP, yes? This features no PvP, instead focusing exclusively on what the Massively staff will be up to over the weekend. Check out our plans in the list past the break, and let us know what you'll be up to in the comments. Or just punch your monitor in displeasure. That's like PvP, although having to replace your monitor afterwards will be an unfortunate consequence.

Beau Hindman, F2P and Mobile Columnist

@Beau_Hindman: I'm switching to Star Sonata for Rise and Shiny and will be getting ready for my write-up of Alliance Warfare. Both are pretty neat games, but I still want to play them more. I'm also continuing my "research" (that means playing games) for my Chromebook All-In-One project, finding HTML5 and other browser-based MMOs that work well on the new Samsung series 3 Chromebook. It's a seriously geeky pursuit... a pure blast. I'm also going to be writing more on my novel for 2013. Overall, this year looks like it's going to amazingly fun.

Bree Royce, Editor-in-Chief

@nbrianna: I'm actually planning on reactivating my World of Warcraft account, so I'll get to dip my toes into Mists of Pandaria finally now that some other games have cleared from my plate. Oh, whom am I kidding -- I won't get to play it this weekend; I'll be too busy modding my UI for a week.

Eliot Lefebvre, Columnist Extraordinaire and Senior Contributing Editor

@Eliot_Lefebvre: Like everyone else in existence, I've got a huge pile of games that I either purchased or was given on Steam over the holidays, so I'd like to clear through some of those. In the MMO space, I'll be playing a smattering of Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic while starting out with DC Universe Online. If I have half as much fun with it as I did with Champions Online, I'll be more than happy.

Elisabeth Cardy, Guild Wars 2 Columnist and Contributing Editor

@elixabethclaire: My Charr Necromancer has a weapon and half a set of lovely armor waiting for her to hit 80, so I'm going to try to get myself to focus on getting her last few levels. It might not all happen over the weekend, but a girl can dream.

Jef Reahard, Managing Editor and Columnist Extraordinaire

@jefreahard: I'm dabbling in EverQuest II and attempting to clear a path over the mountain of games I just acquired via Steam sales. Literally bought at least two per day every day last week. Finally finished my tier one armor grind in DCUO, too, so I may tackle the next set of instances or attempt to find a raid guild; we'll see.

Justin Olivetti, Columnist Extraordinaire and Senior Contributing Editor

@Sypster: My main goal right now is to powerlevel my Mage in RIFT to 50 so I can get back into the expansion. I'm at 26, so that's a good start, but there's a ways to go. So I'm thinking of pushing aside all other games and just focusing on that for now. There's also a persistent voice inside of me asking to play Vanguard... I may have to listen to that.

Mike Foster, Contributing Editor

@MikedotFoster: Just picked up Final Fantasy XIII-2 (I'm a late adopter) and will focus whatever spare time I have this weekend on trying to understand what the heck is going on and why I should care. Sadly, the weekend looks cluttered and busy, making game time scant. More than likely I'll update some EVE Online skill queues and that will be that.

MJ Guthrie, Aion and Sandbox Columnist and Contributing Editor

@MJ_Guthrie: I have so many plans in EverQuest II, The Secret World, and Aion that I don't even know where to start! With so many special events ending after this weekend, I am going to cram as much in as possible before I collapse. And if that isn't enough, I'll hopefully finish that last mission in Left 4 Dead.

Richie Procopio, Multimedia Contributor

@RichieProcopio: Last night I did something that I haven't done in several months: I played a game with my father. Pops and I have a long history of gaming together, but since we stopped raiding in World of Warcraft a year ago, we haven't had a lot of game time together. So last night we remedied that by playing Torchlight 2 for the first time. I plan on playing some more over the weekend because we both had a great time. I bet there will be some Guild Wars 2 time in there as well. I've got to start working on my monthly achievements for January!

Terilynn Shull, Star Trek Online Columnist

@terilynns: The first real weekend of the new year brings with it more Star Trek Online and Lord of the Rings Online. No surprises, really!

At the start of every weekend, we catch up with the Massively staff members and ask them, "What are you playing this week?" (Otherwise known as: WRUP!) Join us to see what we're up to in and out of game -- and catch us in the comments to let us know what you're playing, too!
