BBC Sport app comes to Kindle Fire, now lets you filter out Chelsea news
iOS users already had access to the BBC Sport app's customizable "quick links" feature, which provides more direct access to favorite sports, but an update has just taken the idea a bit further. Quick links now work across Android and the freshly-minted Kindle Fire version too, and they additionally allow you to filter news according to which football club(s) you want to follow and which bits of multi-million-pound transfer gossip you'd rather just ignore. Other, more general improvements include refreshed indexes for a total of 41 different sports and greater prominence given to major tournaments like Formula 1 and the Ashes. If you want to check out the app on a Kindle Fire or Fire HD, you'll need to be in the UK -- an international version is still in the works and will be "available soon." BBC updates Sport app as it launches on Kindle Fire
BBC Sport has today released its mobile app for Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD devices in the UK, bringing BBC Sport's native mobile app to even more sports fans on-the-go. The app is already freely available from Google Play for Android devices, the Apple App Store for iPhones, and now the UK Amazon Kindle Fire Appstore.
As Kindle Fire devices use a version of the Android operating system, the BBC has optimised its existing Android app to reach new audiences efficiently. An international version of the BBC Sport app for Kindle Fire devices will be available soon.
BBC Sport app updates
The launch coincides with a raft of updates to the app across all three supported platforms, making it even easier to follow BBC Sport's expert coverage based on your preferences. These new features build on the live and on-demand video, news, live scores, stats, commentary and analysis that users can already enjoy wherever and whenever they want.
The app's customisable Quick Links menu, which currently allows iPhone users to add their favourite sports for instant access, is now available on all supported versions of the app. And with the start of the new football season drawing near, fans can now add football teams to their Quick Links for even quicker access to breaking news, gossip and other content from their favourite clubs.
Major sporting events have also been made more prominent in the app, beginning with today's third Ashes test at Old Trafford, as key events can now be editorially promoted in the Quick Links menu. The update also brings 41 newly refreshed sports indexes into the app, including athletics, boxing, cycling and snooker.
It has been a successful first half of the year for BBC Sport on mobile, with the app and mobile website playing a key role in the BBC's digital coverage of major sporting events, including the Ashes, Wimbledon, Formula 1, as well as on-going football coverage. In the first six months of 2013, access to the BBC Sport website from handheld devices grew by 27% year-on-year.
