Refresh Roundup: week of September 16th, 2013

Your smartphone and / or tablet is just begging for an update. From time to time, these mobile devices are blessed with maintenance refreshes, bug fixes, custom ROMs and anything in between, and so many of them are floating around that it's easy for a sizable chunk to get lost in the mix. To make sure they don't escape without notice, we've gathered every possible update, hack, and other miscellaneous tomfoolery we could find during the last week and crammed them into one convenient roundup. Official Android updates

  • Nexus 7 (2013): New factory restore images are now available for the WiFi version (JSS15R) and LTE version (JLS36C) of Google's new 7-inch tablet. These latest Android 4.3 builds are separately rolling out as OTA updates. [Google Developers]

  • LG G2: Verizon has released a small OTA update for the G2 that's said to increase the font size within the app tray. [Android Central]

  • Google Chromecast: A maintenance update (13300) is available for the Chromecast that brings a new kernel, security fixes and robustness improvements to the device. [Android Central]

  • LG Optimus G: Sprint has a small update (LS970ZVC) that's now available for the Optimus G. Among the changes, you'll find a pop-up screen for email verification, a new acceptance function for duplicate calendar events and improved SMS delivery for messages under 20 characters. [Android Police]

  • HTC One: According to Telus, an update to Android 4.3 will be available to its customers later this month... in other words, any day now. [MobileSyrup]

Unofficial Android updates, custom ROMs and misc. hackery

  • Moto X: A test build of Android 4.3 for the Moto X on T-Mobile has worked its way into the wild, which is said to improve camera performance. Overall system speed is degraded, however, and the software is described as far from complete. [IntoMobile]

  • Samsung Galaxy S 4: A new utility known as Safestrap is available for the GS4 on AT&T and Verizon, along with the Galaxy S4 Active (AT&T), which allows users to run custom Android builds within a virtualized environment -- thus leaving the stock system intact. Safestrap is still in early development, however, and use of the software comes with more than the normal list of precautions. [Android Central]

Other platforms

  • Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 620: User reports suggest that the Amber / GDR 2 update for is now available to the Lumia 920 on EE in the UK. Separately, the update is also available for the Lumia 620 on O2 (Ireland and UK) and Telus (Canada). [WMPoweruser, WPCentral]

  • Apple iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c: iOS 7.0.1 is available exclusively for Apple's latest smartphones, which brings minor bug fixes to the table. [TUAW]
