Need for Speed film almost already profitable, despite stalling stateside

Distributing partner Disney said it feels "great" about the debut performance of the Need for Speed film, despite a slow start in America. Hollywood Reporter revealed the Aaron Paul flick fumbled in the fumes of Mr. Peabody & Sherman and 300: Rise of an Empire, with $17.8 million in earnings only enough to place third in North America. However, the prize money from international takings was substantial, with $45.6 million coming from 40 other territories. That totals $63.4 million, close to the $66 million the movie cost to make.

"It's a disappointing start on the domestic side," said Disney distribution head Dave Hollis, "but to open to that number worldwide and nearly match the budget of the film is great. This was a very affordable movie and with many territories left to open, everyone will be just fine. We feel great about where we are."

Need for Speed boasts a cast that includes Breaking Bad star Paul, Michael Keaton, and Dominic Cooper, and while the critics have panned it - its Rotten Tomatoes score is just 24 percent - we don't expect Disney and Dreamworks to shed too many tears except for tears of laughter, all the way to the bank.
