E3 2014 had more attendees, fewer exhibitors than last year

While we've already covered some of the weirdest stories from E3 2014, here's another eyebrow-raiser from this year's big video games conference: while there were more attendees at E3 2014 compared to last year, there were fewer exhibitors.

The Electronic Software Association counted 48,900 heads this year compared to 48,200 last year, and 200 exhibitors compared to 230. And while those numbers are nice and all, they only tell a portion of the story. Ever wondered about the hotel situation when nearly 50,000 people travel from across the world to descend on the city of Los Angeles?

The ESA claims in a related press release that attendees "secured more than 28,000 total hotel room nights and generated nearly $40 million in revenue" for Los Angeles. We may have contributed our own fair share of quarters to that number.

E3 2014 DOMINATES WORLD STAGE AS GLOBAL VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY CONVERGES FOR ANNUAL FLAGSHIP EVENT

Los Angeles, CA – June 12, 2014 – 48,900 video game industry professionals, investor analysts, journalists, and retailers from more than 100 countries attended this week's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced today. ESA also revealed that E3 2015 will take place on June 16-18, 2015, in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Approximately 200 exhibitors showcased the latest in computer and video game hardware and software, including the unveiling of the titles that will be the hottest computer and video games this holiday season and into 2015. E3 attendees secured more than 28,000 total hotel room nights and generated nearly $40 million in revenue for the city.

"The video game industry's explosive growth and technological innovation were front and center at E3 2014," said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of ESA, the owner and manager of E3. "Video games are the most innovative and engaging force driving our culture and entertainment experiences the world over. Congratulations to our incredibly creative members, partners, exhibitors, and the hundreds of millions of gamers who engaged with the show online and through social media."

E3 2014 broke its previous social media numbers across all social channels recording more than two million posts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram combined. E3 dominated trending lists on social media with more than 100 unique E3-related topics reaching the trending list in the United States and worldwide.

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) was also announced today as the winner of the 2014 E3 College Game Competition. SCAD's video game, Prisma, was selected by a blue-ribbon panel of industry professionals as the best submission. This is the second winning year for SCAD, which was a co-winner in the 2013 competition. Today, more than 380 U.S. colleges and universities offer courses and degrees in computer and video game design. More than 300 buyers from retail stores and chains worldwide participated in E3's VIP Retailer Program - an elite service that provides buyers top-level concierge, travel, and hosting services.
