The Queue: Space goats

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Anne Stickney (@Shadesogrey) is answering all kinds of questions today.

Shadowmoon Valley opened very briefly on the alpha client yesterday. As soon as it went live, the starting area was immediately hit with a flood of alpha testers. Unfortunately, the servers were brought down a short time after, and will remain down for the weekend to address technical issues. The stampede should commence again in earnest come Monday.

Digsu asked:

Question: Baine has soundfiles in the game that have him shouting "Open the gate!", "I will not let a single human step past me into Mulgore! My people will not be harmed!" and "Sound the drums of war! For Taurajo!". Where are these from?

Those are not actually a part of the game proper -- although from listening to them, they seem to be indicative that at one point in time or another, there was supposed to be some sort of event at the gates that block Mulgore from the rest of the Barrens. Likely whatever was planned for that was cut. It definitely wouldn't be the first time that voice files that were never used made their way into the game files.

jacobbelmore asked:

Q4tQ: On the glowing green guy in the header.... can you turn that off? I sometimes have a hard time getting into the game, and I make up for it by reducing my UI, not using flying mounts, etc. That highlighting, while it looks like it would be awesome in raids, would absolutely kill the questing experience for me.

Yep -- there is an option for turning off the outlines in the user interface. If you like it, you can keep it, if not, you can shut it off. I'm likely going to keep it turned off myself. It's kind of cool at first, but when I'm trying to grab screenshots, not so much.

Aaron Caraway asked:

Anne, after having gone through all the classes to find my niche, I learned two things. One: Even though I started out as rdps and hated melee, I now prefer melee overall. Two: Hunters were so incredibly boring to me. Have you had a similar experience?

Not at all! I started out as a healer, which I no longer do. However, ranged and melee are both pretty appealing as far as I'm concerned. I prefer melee overall, but playing an elemental shaman is ridiculously fun, as is playing a mage. As for hunters, I just boosted a hunter I had from Burning Crusade up to level 90. I'm still re-learning how the class plays now, so I'll get back to you on that. But the majority of my fun with the hunter class was always with soloing content and finding cool pets.

khilt25 asked:

In WOD, we need to finish a certain level in proving grounds before we can queue for heroic dungeons. If we have them beat now will that count ? Or will we need to rebeat them at release?

You'll have to complete them again. If I recall correctly, they are introducing a new round of Proving Grounds for that purpose.

HemttTanker asked:

QftQ - I heard they're giving away a lil'Hogger pet for the 10th Aniversery. What date range do you have to log in to get it?

It's usually the last two weeks of November or so. The official anniversary is November 23.

Zanzibuster asked:

The val'kyr have stepped in and saved Slyvanas a few times already at the cost of their own lives. Is this because she herself is undead that they can do this or is this a "whoever I choose" sort of deal?

This is actually part of a deal made between Sylvanas and the val'kyr after the fall of the Lich King at the end of Wrath. It's detailed in the short story Edge of Night. Long story short, they saved her because they were bound to the will of the dormant Lich King, and wanted freedom. In order to do that, they had to bind their souls to another. Sylvanas had already led the Forsaken down the road to freedom, and the val'kyr wanted her to do the same with them. As long as they live, she will live -- and if she is harmed or killed, one of them will take her place in the void, and she will be brought back.

While that pact stands, she has control over life and death. It's pretty interesting, really. Was that pact made because Sylvanas was undead? No. It was made because she was much like the val'kyr -- that sister of war with a cunning, fierce heart. Someone with whom they identified heavily. Certainly the fact that she was once a banshee bound to serve the Lich King was another common thread, but I don't think it was the most important one that the val'kyr were looking at.

Fussypants asked:

Holy Carp! Captain Cakewalk and and Anne Stickney have done it again! Six days ago, the Captain asked which model would be released next, and Anne (eeriely correctly) guess the male human model! And guess which character model is coming out next? *starts twilight zone music*

Obviously there is something sinister going on here. I don't know what it is, but I like it.
