Destiny Xbox One beta won't be 1080p, Bungie aiming for it in full game

The PS4 beta of Destiny, which begins today, is expected to run in 1080p resolution - after all, last month's alpha did. However, the Xbox One beta, which begins on July 23, will not, according to comments made during an IGN livestream yesterday. Before anyone sounds the alarms, Bungie Community Manager David Dague maintained the developer's aiming to hit 1080p "across all platforms."

Talking to Dague on the stream, IGN's Ryan McCaffrey said, "The way game development works, correct me if I'm wrong, the beta has to be branched off well in advance, aside from the main game. So the final game will run at 1080p on both [PS4 and Xbox One], but we won't see that on the beta of Xbox."

"There is always room for improvement," Dague replied. "This beta is where we are in development right now. The fact that you are playing in the beta is of enormous help to us because it teaches us what this thing is, it teaches us how we can perfect it and make it better before launch."

"We are aiming for 1080p on all platforms," Dague added.

Some games, such as Thief, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and Diablo 3, are rendered or will be rendered at different resolutions across Xbox One and PS4. At E3, Bungie Senior Environmental Artist Jason Sussman said the studio will have Destiny on both platforms at 1080p and 30 frames per second.

When VentureBeat asked why Bungie's targeting 30fps, Sussman said, "It's a lot of different things. I could get really technical, but I'd bore you to death. A lot has to do with performance. We're cross-platform, so we had to be very delicate with all four consoles, making sure they have the same experience, that it looks as good as it possibly can on all these consoles. A lot goes into that, from geometry to textures to post effects to particles to how many players you get on the screen. We're always balancing that out to make sure everyone gets the same experience."

Whatever the Ps may be, Destiny proper is due to launch on Xbox One, PS4, PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 9.
