Huawei reveals two new smartwatches for the ladies
Because your smartwatch doesn't have enough Swarovski crystals.
It might be thick, but Huawei's Watch is still arguably the classiest-looking bit of Android Wear wristcandy out there. Still, device makers are starting to realize that yes, women might want to wear these things too, which is why Huawei just unveiled two Watch models: the $499 Huawei Watch Elegant and the $599 Watch Jewel. Yes, those are their actual names. No, we don't know what Huawei was thinking.
Huawei calls this pair of wearables the first smartwatches designed specifically for women, though Motorola would probably argue otherwise. The differences here are all cosmetic, though — both versions have smaller wristbands and 10 "exclusive feminine" watchfaces, but the Elegant has a knurled pattern etched into the rose-gold-plated steel body. If you're itching to get your bling on for real, then the Watch Jewel and the 68 1.5mm Swarovski crystals running around the 1.4-inch, 400x400 display.
The rest of the particulars here are near- identical to the Huawei Watches we've seen before, which certainly isn't a bad thing -- Android Wear watches all tend to have similar components and Huawei's definitely sits on the higher end of the spectrum. The biggest addition here is a speaker for on-wrist voice calling, because, you know, we all really need that. (I kid, I kid.) Launch dates will vary by market, but you'll be able to pick up the Watch Jewel and Watch Elegant in United States, United Kingdom, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates starting this March.
Update: We just had a close-up look at these new female-friendly Huawei watches and, indeed, they're really not too different from the original Huawei. They're still just as thick and just as wide. There are two main differences, however, that make them decidedly more for the ladies: the straps are now much narrower (18mm to be exact) and the circumference of the watch is also now a touch more curvaceous. Our own editor Nicole Lee has rather small wrists, and she said she appreciates that the straps do look a lot nicer when worn. That said, she didn't think it was quite sufficient to get over the fact that the watch is still pretty chunky overall.
