For the brave souls willing to sign away the next three years of their life to a carrier, Fido's rendition of Nokia's 5200 slider seems like a pretty darned good deal. $25 Canadian (about $23) nets you the music-centric handset, featuring a VGA cam, Class 10 EDGE, Bluetooth, and microSD expansion with Nokia's ubiquitous but solid Series 40 backing up the whole package. Fido sweetens the deal by throwing in a 1GB card, too. Looking pretty good in black, ain't it?[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

In today's video pick, GameTrailers counts down its list of the top ten console failures, including the Jaguar, Virtual Boy, and 3DO. We were tortured by watching footage of these console failures, yet we couldn't turn away, wishing that the hardware had succeeded while laughing about all the obvious reasons the systems bombed. The list covers the systems we expected; would you have added others?See the video after the break.

  • Today's throwbackiest video: Atari Pole Position commercial from the 80s

"HEY! You look like a jerk!" Any commercial that starts off like this is gold in our book. We can't remember seeing a commercial so disproportionally different from the actual gameplay experience. Even the raw processing power *ahem* of the Atari 5200 couldn't make Pole Position look this exciting. You've got 80s metal, crazy haircuts, wacky family racing, and something that'll leave skidmarks on your soul. We need more commercials like this for video games.

If the hoard of N-series Nokias raining down from Espoo yesterday was a bit too much on say, the fuddy-duddy side of the generational slope, then check these new XpressMusic cellphones kiddies. Well "new" only if you missed the 5300 and 5200 peeped before. Still official is official so let's run 'er down again. The 5300 slider is the biggest news here, going tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900MHz with GPRS/EDGE support and 262k color TFT LCD, QVGA (240x320) resolution. It features up to 2GB of microSD storage, dedicated music keys, an adapter for 3.5-mm headphones, built-in IM software, FM radio (with Visual Radio), 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and an expected retail of €250 pre-tax, or $317. The 5200 shares the looks of the 5300 but features an even lower rez camera and display for a pre-tax price of €200 or $254. Meanwhile, the original XpressMusic 3250 twister sports a new look with added support for 2GB microSD cards. Expect the 3250 to pull a pre-tax €400 or $507. All phones, according to Nokia today in New York, will "begin shipments in select markets within weeks." MobileBurn however claims that a US variant of the mix will hit Q1, so who knows. The good folks over at Engadget Chinese have unearthed a few deets on those colorful little sliders we mentioned last week -- and this time we have pics sans the annoying white Nokia stripe through the middle. As reported, the budget sliders will be rocking 160 x 128 displays, 1.3-megapixel cams, Bluetooth, EDGE data, and A2DP support on the 5300 (proof that the tech can roll deep on a lower-end phone). We're not really digging the red / white color scheme -- reminds us a little too much of a peppermint lozenge -- but it looks like Nokia could have a winner on their hands in the slightly classier gray model.

Leaks out of the Nokia camp aren't terribly common -- certainly nothing on the order of a Palm or RIM, for example -- but we'll always take what we can get. Shots have emerged of these here fun looking little sliders, apparently coined the 5200 and 5300. Specs on the devices are largely hearsay at this point, but here's what we're being told: 1.3-megapixel cam with LED flash, 160 x 128 display (presumably guaranteeing Series 40), and dedicated music controls on the slightly higher-end 5300. Nothing to get terribly worked up about, but with Nokia seemingly throwing a majority of its energy at its S60-based Nseries devices, it's always refreshing to see our Finnish friends pour some love into the low end.[Via SlashGear]

  • Verizon adds LG VX5300 to lineup

Those Verizon folks looking for a clamshell with a little less wallet-emptying power than the Samsung A990 might take a gander at the new LG VX5300, a modest update to the venerable VX5200 introduced last year. Besides looking a bit comelier than the 5200, the 5300 adds Bluetooth -- dial-up networking and all -- and boosts the 65,000-color 160 x 128 display to 262K colors. The midrange flip is available as we speak for $50 to $150, depending on contract and rebates. Don't run, now; you might hurt yourselves.[Via MobileTracker]
