You might have to wait a bit longer before using a 5G network for your home internet service. Verizon (Engadget's parent company) is pushing back the broader rollout of 5G Home. It's waiting for new, more powerful equipment that's said to become available in the second half of 2020 before expanding the service beyond its current five cities.

You probably didn't notice it, but Verizon (Engadget's parent company) has a dedicated media player of its own. The carrier quietly released a Stream TV device meant to court 5G Home subscribers who've figuratively and literally cut the television cord. It's really a straightforward Android TV device with support for 4K video, Chromecast streaming and a Google Assistant-capable voice remote. Naturally, Verizon is hoping that you'll use this to take advantage of its Disney+ deal, tack YouTube TV on to your bill or stream with one of Yahoo's apps.

Verizon (Engadget's parent company) may be rolling out 5G at a pokey pace, but at least you won't have to choose which kind of 5G you get. Consumer division chief Ronan Dunne told investors that fixed 5G Home service will "in due course" be available in every market where mobile 5G is available. It's "one network," he said -- there's little stopping Verizon from offering both. The carrier is planning a "full" launch for Home late in 2019 using the official 5G standard, so the synchronicity might begin relatively quickly.
