  • New Devil May Cry in Ninja Theory's hands

It was no coincidence that a new Ninja Theory game announcement and a "DMC" trademark were discovered at the same time. Capcom has confirmed that Enslaved/Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory is applying its expertise to demon hunting, with a trailer for DmC: Devil May Cry. What, no number? It's a "rebirth of Devil May Cry," starring a younger Dante who may or may not be experiencing the events in the game for real, judging from the appearance in the trailer of a chained character who may be hallucinating. "We're hoping to make a game that even Capcom can be proud of," Ninja Theory director Tameem Antoniades said on stage. No wonder -- there's good money in pleasing Capcom.

  • New Ninja Theory game to be announced at TGS, as Capcom trademarks 'DMC'

If you read the May issue of Game Informer, this rumor might sound familiar: Ninja Theory, developer of PS3 exclusive Heavenly Sword and the promising Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, may be tasked with creating a new entry in Capcom's Devil May Cry franchise (last seen in 2008). Capcom has repeatedly expressed interest in leaving some of its established franchises in the hands of Western studios, with Bionic Commando and Dead Rising all finding homes outside of Japan. The rumor has found its way back into circulation, thanks to a tweet and a trademark. According to Ninja Theory's Twitter account, a new game from the team is set to be announced at Tokyo Game Show, which opens on September 16th. Before that, however, Capcom will hold a press conference (a few hours away at the time of writing) and announce several new titles -- and "DMC" may be one of them. According to Siliconera, Capcom has filed a wide-ranging trademark for "DMC," covering everything from game software to mobile phone ringtones. The trademark isn't enough to reveal a collusion between Capcom and Ninja Theory (let alone a new Devil May Cry game), but it raises an interesting question: Will Andy Serkis play Dante or Nero?

Microsoft has unfurled some of its plans for Xbox Live downloadable content for April, including new additions to Games on Demand and Deals of the Week, as well as the April 14th release of Final Fight: Double Impact. On top of that, look for a half-priced The Maw on the week of April 12 and two add-ons for Mega Man 10 this week: Bass and Special Stage 1. Head past the break for the full list. %Gallery-79231%

  • You may download PC/360 Devil May Cry 4 on December 22

Has the pernicious dealing with retail requirement kept you from the ongoing, stylish adventures of Nero and Dante (not that Dante)? Capcom has good news for those of us with no tolerance for relics like stores and boxes: starting December 22, the PC version of Devil May Cry 4 will be available for download on "the digital distribution partner of your choice," including, of course, Capcom's own shop, where pre-orders are being accepted for $29.99. The 360 version will hit Games on Demand, along with Lost Planet Colonies Edition, the same day. Capcom notes that the PC version of the action game features some enhancements not found in the console versions: altered enemy placements, a "Turbo Mode," an extra-difficult "Legendary Dark Knight Mode," among several visual tweaks. And now, it's enhanced with buying it from home mode!

  • Famitsu: Devil May Cry for PSP canceled

File this under the "unsurprising" category. After years of silence, it looks like the PSP version of Devil May Cry has been canned, indicated by the latest issue of Japanese mag Famitsu finally removing the title from its release list and noting the title's demise. IGN notes that Famitsu has been wrong about these kinds of things in the past, but we're inclined to believe it this time. The news is disappointing, especially considering the incredible popularity of PSP in Japan. A Devil May Cry game for the handheld would've made quite a bit of cash, we think.

  • Bayonetta gearing up to hair-kick demons in Fall 2009

In Tokyo last night, Sega quietly announced plans for a "simultaneous worldwide release for Fall 2009" of action/hair manipulation game Bayonetta. New screens revealed at the event show the game's heroine battling enemies on the side of a building, unleashing her guillotine on another and fighting a really, really shiny dragon. Would we expect any less from Devil May Cry director Hideki Kamiya? As the press event held in Tokyo was, as you might expect, all in Japanese, we've reached out to Sega of America for confirmation of the worldwide-ness of this announcement. Call us skeptical, but we expect the next time we hear about the game won't be until E3. %Gallery-50067% [Via Inside-Games.jp]

Our impressions of Bayonetta have been consistently favorable, and now we must invent new heights for our appreciation to soar. Following our viewing of this latest trailer -- the highlight of which is the game's heroine suplexing a giant dragon because we weren't lying in the headline of this post -- we've come to believe that Bayonetta's release cannot come soon enough. And it doesn't even have a release date yet, so it's that much tougher. Sure, it looks a lot like Devil May Cry, but is that such a bad thing? Let us hold hands through this near two minute video ride together, and embrace the action. And maybe watch her suplex that dragon 3 or 4 more times.%Gallery-22955%

  • Devil May Cry hits 10 million shipped

We may not always have loved every one of his games or his hairstyles, but we wanted to take a moment to tip our hat to Dante, whose Devil May Cry series has reached the milestone of 10 million units shipped. For some perspective, 10 million pennies would make a six-foot by six-foot cube, a cube we imagined would be considerably larger and more impressive before we started doing the math. When asked if he was choked up by the news, Dante said, "Devils never cry ... These tears, tears are a gift only humans have." Nero later chimed in unprompted that he was going to Disneyworld.

  • Devil May Cry director hearts God of War, Ninja Gaiden not so much

There was a time – when he was working at Capcom, creating the likes of Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, and Viewtiful Joe – that Hideki Kamiya didn't say much. In fact, he hated doing interviews. Something's changed, because now that he's at Platinum Games, the historically low-key director is letting his true feelings out – about action games, at least.Speaking to EGM, Kamiya said that, "I've never played Ninja Gaiden, and to be honest, I'm not that interested." Itagaki could not be reached for comment on whether or not he felt that epic burn. So, what does the master designer actually like? God of War. "There's one game that I am paying really close attention to, that I think is a rival game, a good game, which is called God of War 3," he revealed, boasting, "I want to make a game that exceeds God of War's sequel." That game, he hopes, is his next: Bayonetta. In particular, Kamiya credits Sony's series with being "Very carefully made," saying, "Devil May Cry was a bit rough, but I think that there's no roughness in God of War." Pretty nice words, eh, Mr. Jaffe?

  • Capcom crushes rumors, still strongly supports PSP

A reader of Capcom Unity, Capcom's official blog, posed a bold question to the crew during the blog's "Ask Capcom weekly roundup." He wanted to know why Capcom had 'forsaken the PSP.' He got the idea after listening to a silly rumor made by a friend and then further worried having seen Capcom's minimalist PSP release schedule. In response, Capcom strong arm Christian Svensson had this to say: "Absolutely 100% false ... We're still making new PSP games. We may be the most successful PSP publisher in the world with Monster Hunter Portable 2nd and 2ndG. It'd be a difficult decision to defend stopping development when we have such success on the platform." While it is reassuring to hear Capcom stomp out such an unwarranted rumor, we're sure most of you are still wondering what sort of games Capcom must be working on. Truth be told, there isn't too much known at the moment; Fate/Tiger Colosseum Upper is the only Capcom PSP game announced for release in the remainder of the year. That's a Japan-only title. Then we're brought to Devil May Cry PSP, which as of right now is still only a rumor. Since Capcom haven't officially said what these "new PSP games" are, then we'll pose a question upon our readers. What do you think Capcom might be working on?[Via Pocket Gamer]

Their later musical crimes may keep them off of our 100 favorite artists list, but we have to admit that Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney were exactly right in the classic song "Ebony and Ivory" when they sang:"Ebony and Ivory, shoot together in perfect harmony. Side by side in some Japanese store, replicas from DMC."How did they know what Devil May Cry was back in 1982? We have absolutely no idea. But we like to think that Paul and Stevie would be happy to know that with replicas of the dual pistols now available from Wonder Festival, their dream of complete global racial harmony is one step closer. ... Sort of.

  • DC, Capcom partner to bring Resident Evil and Devil May Cry to the funny pages

Maybe it was sitting back and seeing the competition (Marvel) clean house in the games industry but DC Comics has really jumped onto videogames lately. From Mortal Kombat vs DC to the game based on The Dark Knight we all know is coming, DC is jumping in the gaming pool with both feet. Another example of DC going for a profit swim is the announcement that DC Comics and Capcom plan to bring Resident Evil and Devil May Cry to the comic world. The agreement with Capcom isn't the only gaming deal DC has struck lately as the comic giant is also working with EA to release a six-part comic prequel based on the upcoming Mirror's Edge and with Microsoft to publish a series based on Gears of War set to arrive in October. No other details were given about the two Capcom projects but hope that DC's Devil May Cry comic series turns out well, otherwise they could end up filing for bankruptcy like the last team who tried.[via Joystiq]

  • Capcom: No trophy support for Devil May Cry 4

A poster on Capcom Unity's forums has received an answer to the question of whether Devil May Cry 4 and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix will be getting the trophy treatment and it is no. Capcom feels that DMC4 already has "its own little trophylike system" and the Puzzle Fighter team has moved on to other projects. There is a tiny bit of good news though, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix may have trophies implemented, but it will depend on "what schedules look like and what Sony's requirements are." The only real good news is future games from Capcom will all have trophies, as it has "been worked into CEI's developer contracts as a required deliverable." Have other publishers signed such a contract? This is rather disappointing, but after a string of such reports, we are not surprised. We are just really hoping SSF2T HD Remix will have support.[Thanks, Jake C.!]

  • 'Devil May Cry series' listed on Capcom PSP release calendar

We've seen Dante sit proudly atop many things; piles of enemies, thrones and building tops, to name a few. Now we can add "Capcom release calanders" to that list, as Devil May Cry for PSP is currently resting at the top of Capcom Japan's recent and future games list. Sure, there's no release date attached and the game was discussed by Capcom way back in June 2005, but we heard a rumor only last September that the game will definitely release at some point. We're not in the habit of believing every rumor that's thrown at us, so we'll be waiting for E3 to see if anything is mentioned there. The PSP could definitely do with a few new games to flesh out its 2008 release schedule and Devil May Cry would be a perfect fit. [Via Joystiq; thanks Joe]

  • Capcom.co.jp lists Devil May Cry for PSP [Update]

    07.04.2008

[Update: riot from Gamespark.jp – along with our own Andrew Yoon – let us know this listing has apparently been on Capcom's Japanese website since as far back as 2005. What's the deal, Capcom?]Rumors that Devil May Cry would be theatrically shooting its way onto the PSP are about as old as the PSP itself. As far back as June 2005, Capcom discussed bringing Devil May Cry to the PSP along with nine other PSP titles; at that time, GameSpot wrote, "Devil May Cry [for the PSP] could see the light of day before 2006." By the time 2006 rolled around, still no sign of Devil May Cry for PSP, save for a mention on Capcom's Japanese website. So here we are, two years on, and again we're seeing a mention of Devil May Cry for PSP on Capcom's Japanese site. Included at the top of a list of recently released and not-yet-released PSP games, "Devil May Cry" is alone in its absence of a release date, a price, or a linked website. Hit the Source link to see if it's still there or, just in case they've noticed that Dante crawled out of his cage and taken it down, we've got a screengrab after the break. Just a reminder: Capcom's E3 press conference is at 10:30ET on July 15th. Just saying ... [Thanks, Jared; via VFH]

Following the Cannes Film Festival this past week, Bloomberg Japan is reporting that Capcom might be looking to capitalize on its hottest video game properties through various film deals. The strategy, according to Bloomberg, would closely resemble one struck by Marvel Comics years ago, where movie studios sign off on various properties, such as the already-established Resident Evil series, and potential silver-screen newcomer Devil May Cry.Capcom reportedly was approached by several movie studios to license out their properties. According to Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto, the company hopes to announce more concrete plans in the near future. Mega Man, anyone? Here's hoping.

You know the industry's come a long way when consoles are no longer the exclusive domain of androgynous, sword-waving jackasses with glowing demon arms. Capcom has sent us a reminder that the Personal Computer version of Devil May Cry 4, the latest (and commercially successful) entry in its slash-and-shoot saga, is due to arrive "THIS SUMMER." Said version will enhance Nero and Dante's adventure by adding "new modes, enhanced graphics options and some additional content."For those not sold on the joys of launching demons into the air and then shooting them repeatedly, Capcom will offer a demo and performance benchmark before the retail version ships.

  • The Daily Grind: should there be adaptive difficulty in MMOs?

    by
    Akela Talamasca

Adaptive difficulty (also called Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment) is a game mechanic in which play becomes easier or more difficult depending on how well you progress. If you keep dying in the course of the game, the action ramps down a bit until it's at a more manageable level. This can be seen in the God of War and Devil May Cry franchises. As an uneasy compromise between the hardcore and casual players, it serves to make things easier initially, but at the cost of preventing access to content unlockable only to those willing to put in the time to master the challenges, as difficult as they may be.But in an MMO, where the gameplay is meant to progress conceivably into eternity, does adaptive difficulty help or hurt the player? Should the challenge remain static, and act as a determinant of inclusion, a kind of 'survival of the fittest'? If gameplay is accessible to any level of skill, should a monthly fee be in place to take advantage of the hordes of relatively non-hardcore users?
